Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 75 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bonarda674 on 1/17/2024: Decanted and had a taste.
On the nose: earth, dried mushroom, and a bit of spice lift, not much fruit
Palate: acid but tannic, not resolved. Very earthy
Color: semi translucent ruby, light brown tinge

Opening up to smoky cherry on palate and a few hours later, still needs time but the mushroom scent has faded. After 2 hours got more perfumed, just a touch of raspberry and spiced cranberry with herbs. Nice perfume now but a bit of heat is coming through.

Overall very enjoyable but still needs more time to really shine I suspect. (703 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 12/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Salon Ficofi Paris walkabout tasting and dinner, no detailed tasting notes. Soft, generous, good balanced, a nice surprise. (1292 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/17/2023: Pausing for the Cause Fundraiser and Dinner (Obelix - Chicago IL): Small glass. Lots of black and red cherry here, all very interesting and meaty, but seemingly quite firm and backward tonight. Patience required, like with so many 2009s. (1775 views)
Tasted by portman63 on 7/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Pretty and delicious. Soft grape tannins and strawberry / raspberry fruit throughout the palate with a long clean finish. At this point still one of best buys in the Beaune. There is no rush as this will be solid for several more years. (1096 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Popped-and-poured. Meaty, dense, and so powerful, even if still slightly backward. Long, lingering finish. First time tasting since barrel. Like many 2009s, this needs more time to really strut its stuff. (2760 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/19/2022 & rated 93 points: The most ready and delicious Pinot on the table tonight. Excellent concentration and intrigue with earth, florals and spice to the red fruits. Early in a long drinking window. (1611 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/19/2022 & rated 93 points: 2009 red Burgundies, TDS x CMJ (Chicago, IL): Probably the best of the 2009 red Burgundies tonight in that it's just drinking the best. Surprisingly well-resolved without the Beaune tannins becoming obtrusive. Relatively open-knit with lots of red fruit and a really nice lift. I'm not sure it's even worth bothering to age this more because this is drinking so well right now. (2167 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 9/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Ripe red fruits, fresh and minerally, with a silky feel and a slightly firm finish. Drinking well now, but should be good for a number of years. Excellent bottle. (1372 views)
Tasted by tunaguy on 6/28/2022: this is really nice but somewhat of an unruly teenager at this point. Most the previous notes hit the mark but i think this still needs some time to really come together. I see this hitting it's high point 2026-2029 and most likely staying at a high level for a while after that (1816 views)
Tasted by JCMenendez on 1/24/2022 & rated 93 points: This is a beauty, medium bodied, but full of flavor and entering a sweet spot. Packs black cherry, some orange rind, a little game (maybe suggested by another reviewer). Super interesting wine from start to finish. (2234 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 7/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Gamey, black cherry bouquet. Soft cherry fruit flavor with mild tannins. Medium-bodied. Good grip. Moderately persistent finish. This should evolve for an additional 3-4 more years.
Clos des Ursules is a specific portion of the premier Cru vineyard Vignes Franches In Beaune. It’s owned entirely by Louis Jadot and is one of the most highly prized vineyard areas of the village.
Corked pulled an hour before drinking. (2469 views)
Tasted by MS86 on 7/3/2021 & rated 89 points: This is a very classic wine showing well at 12 years of age.

Medium intensity nose of fur, dusty black fruit, earth and that classic Pinot Noir cherry.

Medium tannins, high acidity.

Flavours of meat, cherry, earth, black liquorice and age / balsamic.

Soft finish of good length.

Drink now. (1781 views)
Tasted by dougie on 5/6/2021 & rated 92 points: Fine for many years. Very enjoyable! (2434 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 11/23/2020 & rated 92 points: boy, again this didn't disappoint, and was an amazing departure from your typical '09 burg... this had lifted / elegant / bright red fruit, with a hint of spice started to come around... my prior note said it well... this can be an ager (given the acidity) but lovely to drink now for sure... would have guessed 2007 (or maybe 2014?) if I had it 'vintage blind' (2793 views)
Tasted by spacewrangler on 9/30/2020 & rated 79 points: This may yet develop into something nice but I can't understand the love for this bottle right now. Nose is very muted and muddied. The palate is busted, all over the place with acidity and heat poking out alternately. Legit tastes like a poorly made Cali RRV Pinot, think Kosta Browne. Definitely cellar your bottles for a decade, or better yet, sell them to someone who doesn't see this note. (2671 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 8/18/2020 & rated 92 points: saw my prior notes and am encouraged... this was drinking quite nicely... I was struck at how it was medium bodies and downright elegant... UNUSUAL for an '09 for sure... anyway, seems like perhaps the fruit / body may be napping given my prior notes and that would be great cuz this isn't flabby at all and has the structure / acidity to carry a great wine for another two decades (or more?)... hoping I don't get crazy and drink my remaining six bottles in the next 5 years... this could be an ager for sure (2391 views)
Tasted by jeffreylubowski on 5/20/2020 & rated 92 points: This cant be a 2009. So serious and tight, not a fruit bomb at all. Earthy and savory, not a whole lot fruit, but what is there is dark. I would have said 2006 or 2008. I thoro enjoyed this, but it needed a long decant and even then it wasn't eager to please. I would say years and years from peak. Good value here. (3356 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 1/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Initially, I thought this wine tasted like basic Village-level Burgundy -- pretty, but uninteresting. But with a little air (or, just as likely, more imagination on my part), this wine began charming me. I noticed more and more prominent notes of earth beneath the fruit. Hints of mint. Hints of black truffle. Hints of cinnamon. Pinot, when it's good, is the most alluring of wines, and this is good pinot. Then, it is so delicate on the palate. Comparing to women is no longer socially acceptable. I should compare to Mozart or Renoir.

My sense is that this wine will improve as it ages over the next few years. (2874 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 11/4/2019 & rated 91 points: Red Burgs and Bubbles (The Gage, Chicago IL): The nose is open and giving with a darker take to the fruit with tones of raspberries, dark red cherries, herbs, leather, tobacco, violets, and earth tones. This is well balanced with the fruit still showing a more primary quality that has harmonized well so far. The Medium bodied feel is balanced with crisp, medium+ acidity and youthful, medium+ tannins. This was helped by food as the structure still has some youth to it. This is already starting to show pretty well and there is still plenty of room to grow. (1265 views)
Tasted by dougie on 9/18/2019 & rated 92 points: Poured off a glass and waited an hour. Smooth and balanced. Not the most complex, but beautiful flavors. No tannins or heat. Can wait on other two, but no need. (2765 views)
Tasted by jyensan on 7/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Enjoyed with charcoal grilled chicken and asparagus. Did not decant. Took about a half hour to begin to open up. Light color and opacity. Light bodied initially, but closer to medium 90 minutes in. Nice acidity and complexity. Floral aromas with strawberry and spices. Maybe a bit of cinnamon, wonderful flavors of cherry, strawberry, but of citrus, baking spices and a touch of tea. Much more going on here but too much for me to express. Not really a Burgundy fan but this makes me more so. I’d better get a few more for the cellar. (2721 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 6/6/2019 & rated 91 points: saw my note from March '19, this bottle was very similar but just a little less body / oomph than that note suggests -- therefore one point deduction... before seeing that note I was going to remark on how much structure this had relative to fruit (great acidity which I like a lot) ESPECIALLY for an '09.... fine wine, and I suspect I might have enjoyed it more (and it might have been more open / giving) if I'd saved some for day two (or decanted in the AM)... but alas we pounded it!! (2822 views)
Tasted by ajbergren on 4/21/2019 & rated 94 points: Light ruby garnet with medium optical density and very high reflectivity. A tinge of amber on the rim, but just so. Beautiful floral and cherry aromas, with a delicate and sensuous character. The nose also shows is cherry and cherry pit, strawberry, ripe raspberry, rose hips, gravel, and earthy spices. Good complexity and medium intensity. Medium minus body on the palate, with a dancing, light footed texture that is broad and shows integrated tannins. Very lively, and yet in an elegant and graceful way- not in your face, but more of a "catch me if you can"- by the time you think you do, you wonder just how it managed to get away. Still shows fresh acidity (medium or so) with vibrancy, but also is soft and approachable for sure. Flavours of cherry and delicious red fruits on the attack. The intensity is soft yet present, with some sweetness and savoury notes on entry. Shows excellent density and concentration on the front end without any hint of too much. The midpalate evolves to bring on gravel and spices on top of the fruit, but very soft and supportive of the more delicate fruit flavours. Really shows some interesting complexity here, but very very elegant; requires careful consideration! The final transition shows some mouth-watering cherry pit and very light, clean tobacco smoke. Really nice finish with some lingering savoury-sweet fruit, good length, and very much interest-grabbing twist of dusty citrus. So well balanced, it just shows you everything laid bare, and begs for your attention to the various aspects (sweet, savoury, tart, fruit, spice, flowers, juicy tobacco, and aromatic nectar). If you pay attention to one, another might just pass you by. Just classic great wine!

This is showing a bit of age for sure, in a really nice spot. Can age longer I suspect for sure, but really nice at the moment. Has all the class and elegance you could want, with a delicious and just plain gorgeous profile. Gains even more with some air, and provides a pure pleasure to enjoy how ever you find yourself with an open cork of this! (2810 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 3/21/2019 & rated 92 points: really good, not surprisingly this was more full bodied than your avg Jadot Ursules, but it also had a mix of fruit (purple) and umami... there was a je ne said quoi about this wine, overall it was luxurious without being cloying or overdone... bravo, and would be interesting to follow for next 20-25 years, happy to have ten more (2673 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/7/2019: Light red. Strawberry aromas. Lighter weight. Similar lacy strawberry and soil flavors, little in the way of remaining tannins. Curious for the vintage in that it has no hint of surmaturité, and in fact, it is one of the lightest and most airy Clos des Ursules I've ever tried. As far as I can tell, fully mature, which is not the usual aging curve of this wine. (2801 views)

The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
