Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 68 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by devraj on 9/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Reddish orange/brown in color. Aromas of dried red cherries, asian spices, hint of tobacco, cooked mushrooms and earth. Ripe, sweet and savory stewed red berries make an impression on the palate that shows decent acidity, no tannins and a decent spicy and earthy finish. (291 views)
Tasted by Canoehead on 8/12/2023 & rated 90 points: Maxflight of Brunellos (Wilmot Wine Emporium): Part of a Brunello Tasting with three Talenti vintages as the feature event. This wine was ready to please. Warm bouquet of stewed cherry and plum and tobacco pouch and leather. A bit of a funkiness on the nose but that's possibly just a little stale reduction. Straightforward, dark red fruit with chocolate, licorice and black olive. Fine tannins and good balance. This is meant to be drunk now. Started to acquire a bitter note within an hour of the tasting. Pair with grilled red meats. Drink up! (528 views)
Tasted by CoastCabCritic on 5/28/2023: Oxidized (430 views)
Tasted by biggie on 11/21/2021 & rated 91 points: Root day - direct from the cellar so cool and pop and pour. Translucent garnet/orange in the glass (Pinot Noir glass which I prefer for older Sangiovese based wines). Nose of dried red flowers, savoury red fruit, even a touch of tar (which I didn’t expect). On the palate it shows the dryness and red fruit I expected along with a smokiness and earthiness I didn’t. A bit of a drying finish but that may be because it’s still cool. Will update when it warms to cool room temp and has some air.

Leaf day - well… it took 4 days but now this wine is shining! Showing definite potential for more development. Now showing beautiful red fruit, red florals, cinnamon sticks, dried leaves, and something ethereal that I can’t quite define but is in every quality Brunello I’ve had (some tar/licorice mixed with beeswax is the closest I can describe it). Palate is similar to the nose with the fruit being more dried than fresh and the spice showing in the long finish along with the floral element.
Not rated first day but a 91 tonight. (1537 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 11/21/2021 & rated 89 points: Three years after my previous bottle, this is showing on its very last leg now. Clear bricking in the glass, an oxidative whiff on the nose upon Pnp, soft and round on the palate with savory medicinal notes but otherwise aromatically fairly bland. Past peak. Glad this was my last bottle, difficult vintage particularly for producers in the Southern cluster like Talenti. Drink up. (1522 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 11/4/2021 & rated 90 points: Dried red fruit, earth, rhubarb and a hint of menthol. Balanced. This has faded somewhat, but I don't get overripe or hot notes. A bit rustic. I agree that it seems time to drink up. (1303 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/29/2021 & rated 89 points: I count myself as a Talenti fan but this vintage has been marred by warmth of '07. There is some appealing fruit, herbs & underbrush notes. I'm struggling with the alcohol heat and heady aromas poking through to degrade the overall experience. Still some tannin to resolve. A bit of head scratching vintage for Talenti. One btl left that I'll take a one last swing at this again between 2025-27. 89 minus (1496 views)
Tasted by devraj on 7/24/2021 & rated 92 points: Hazy brick red in color. Dried reddish black fruits, licorice, dark florals, baking spices and hay on the nose. A lush and medium bodied palate shows sweet licorice coated reddish black fruits, medium (-) acidity and a long fruit filled finish with a touch of barnyard. (1463 views)
Tasted by asheio on 2/20/2021 & rated 89 points: Classic style. The fruit is fading a bit so based on this bottle I will say drink now. (1127 views)
Tasted by JVG on 11/3/2020: Medium-deep brick red color. Very ripe and concentrated on the nose, with perhaps slightly stewed dark fruit aromas of plum, blackberry, and blueberry. There is maybe a touch of volatility to it as well, but actually not much in the way of developed notes. Some of the other CT notes made me concerned that I had already waited too long on this one, but honestly, on the nose at least, it's still showing very primary to me. The only other things I'm getting beyond the very ripe fruit are a bit of spice and maybe some violet floral character. A bit worried heading into the first taste that this is just going to e a big heavy fruit bomb without much elegance or complexity.

Well, after my first taste, I would say my fears were partially confirmed. it is very big and very ripe, and has a ton of rich, ripe, round dark fruit flavors that dominate the profile, and it also shows more alcoholic heat than I would like. On the plus side, however, the tannins are very pleasantly silky, and there is some nice tobacco herbal character that provides a bit of depth, and the oak influence has been managed very well, providing that luxurious texture and hints of vanilla and creme without sticking out or making the profile overtly woody or drying it out with oak tannin.

So overall I would say that the winemaking is very good, and the fruit is very high quality, but the ripeness and stylistic choices are such that it tastes like a very good super Tuscan to me. A very enjoyable wine, but not quite what I'm looking for from Brunello. As for longevity, I don't really see any need to rush to drink this, as there is still a ton of fruit and those primary flavors are still dominating, but I also don't know that I think it's going to reveal a wealth of new depth and complexity with more age. I'm not sure it will ever develop into more than it is now. (1140 views)
Tasted by marcelk on 9/2/2020: Stewed prunes. Drink up. (1106 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 8/9/2020 & rated 91 points: This continues to drink well and to be enjoyable with a minimal amount of air. It’s cleanly made and I, again, find a slight balsamic note on the palate. I think this is drinking at peak and wouldn’t hold them for more than a few additional years before expecting to see a decline. (1256 views)
Tasted by mcromain1021 on 6/14/2020 & rated 90 points: I think this could have had more potential and am suspicious about the storage as I bought 3 bottles on Winebid. Not saying Winebid is at fault as physically bottles were in good shape with good fill, just saying these seemed more aged than other Brunello I have had at this age in the past. Bottle 1 was borderline corked, bottle 2 was corked and bottle 3 was good. Brownish in color did not detract from taste. Chocolate, caramel, earth notes. Medium bodied finish. Drink now. (1268 views)
Tasted by mcromain1021 on 6/14/2020 flawed bottle: Corked... (1063 views)
Tasted by mcromain1021 on 6/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Upon opening, slight notes of cork taint. Oh no....Thankfully, I gave it some time and those aromas blew off. What remained, was an earthly and quite delicious 13 year old Brunello. I have a couple more and will be anxious to try another soon and hopefully not flirt with cork odors at all. Drink now. (985 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/20/2019 & rated 92 points: UWS a random set of wines (@ JB): Herbs, red berries and vanilla in the bouquet. On the palate chocolate, dark berries, good acidity and length. Beautiful and juicy wine. (1398 views)
Tasted by up4wine on 7/26/2019 & rated 92 points: I am so enjoying the '07 and '06 Brunello's right now. They seem to be in a great place and the source material continues to shine. Great fruit and wines extremely well made. (1168 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 12/31/2018 & rated 93 points: plenty of bright dark red fruit with great balance; early secondary flavors but still mostly about the fruit; this goes so well with BBQ flank steak (1294 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 12/24/2018 & rated 91 points: Sports a distinct balsamic note on both the nose and the palate. Nice, but tough to follow the ‘04 Poggione. (1278 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 11/17/2018 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 30 minutes just prior to dinner. Built in a more modern style of Brunello. This is a good wine, which we enjoyed with herb crusted beef tenderloin with black truffle butter. Magnificent pairing. The wine is drinking great now as long as you pair it with food. If by itself, you might think it is still too young. (1381 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 9/22/2018 & rated 91 points: Pnp for lunch and then finished remaining half of bottle for dinner. This is well done given the challenges of the vintage. Good acidity and not showing any of the overripe/burned fruit notes some other 07 BdM show. Not the most complex BdM but a classic profile and works well with food. The remaining wine 6h later darkens visibly and shows some more balsamic and dark fruit notes but also loses some of the freshness. Would pnp and drink over the next 3-5 years as this is not going to improve with further bottle age. (1667 views)
Tasted by asheio on 6/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Nicely developed now. Cedar, tobacco and cherry on the nose. Great fruit, smooth tannins. A bit warm finish. (1608 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 5/8/2018: Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): Cloudy, older, orange rim; caraway, aged Italian, wilted rose, cedar, soy, balsamic; spicy red fruit, still strong acid, good strength just a bit past peak (this bottle). (1696 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 4/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Bright red tangy berry fruit, with new saddle leather, and tobacco built in a modern style. Perfect pairing with Osso Bucco on a bed of risotto. Yum! (1584 views)
Tasted by swade on 9/6/2017 & rated 92 points: Some tawny infiltrating the body. Spicy aromas poke through a bowl of black/blue fruit. Seemless entry. Balanced offering of red fruit, rhubarb and spice. Firm, but this really excels. 92 (2015 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
