Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 47 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by vvWine.ch on 3/1/2024 & rated 91 points: Reifes Rubin. (671 views)
Tasted by dwynne on 2/26/2024 & rated 90 points: There is the basis of a good wine trying to get out here, you get glimpses of it, but perhaps the vintage is just simply working against it. Ultimately a bit disappointing, maybe time will bring more life? (671 views)
Tasted by Get Real on 2/24/2024 & rated 91 points: PnP though developed in glass. Based on other reviews this may have improved with more age or air. Deep dark colour, no bricking. Leather, spices and dark fruit on nose and palate. Nice balance of tannin and acid. Overall a classic St Estephe (563 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 5/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Still some time to go on this. DD'd for an hour the prior night and opened again for dinner the following evening.
Opaque colouring, with notes of black fruit & pencil shavings on the nose. Still a good deal of tannin and acidity on the palate. No rush to open the next bottle but worked well with a selection of grilled meats at a local chop house (1610 views)
Tasted by AlexB70 on 2/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Color opaque ruby, slight start on getting coppery, still feel young. On the nose, leathery, dark cherry, blueberry, notes of tabacco, spices, hints of citrus, very aromatic after an hour of opening. Very well integrated, long lasting mouthfeel, tanins pleasants, does not feel the 11 years, nice acidity, a little after taste, but nothing unpleasant. Great wine overall, will probably improve over the next few years, and get to 93, may be 94! (1824 views)
Tasted by swade on 10/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Primary color with no sign of aging. Lovely, effusive aromas of brambly black currants and camphor. On the palate creamy cassis, number two lead pencil and finishes clean with graphite. The vintage shows in the relatively short finish, but this wine really exceeded expectations this evening. This didn't seem as strict as past vintages from this Chateau and was very giving. 93 (2036 views)
Tasted by Everything Ahead on 10/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Even after being double decanted for a few hours by a friend, this wine showed kind of dumb at first, a bit hollow even on the midpalate. But after another hour or so of being open it came around in a big way, gradually revealing its charms. Mid-weight, balanced alcohol, with subtle aromatic complexities of iron, graphite, and smoldering coal amalgamated with dark cherry fruit. This could age a lot longer but if you give it a few hours of air and take time to savor it, you are in for a very civilized, pleasant treat. A classic, yet understated, St Estephe. Rating: 93+ (2582 views)
Tasted by racerchris on 10/16/2022 & rated 93 points: Double decanted in the morning and brought to a friend's house in the afternoon. Consumed alongside two other wines - a 2007 Cornas and a 2008 Serpico - with assorted appetizers.
While decanting the only aroma was mildly of aged wood.
Similarly, the first pour showed soft aged wood, overlaying subtle red fruit and strong spices. It gradually opened up in the glass and the mostly dark fruit became balanced with old wood, spices, proper acidity and substantial yet smooth tannins.
By the end of our tasting the St Estephe was perhaps a step ahead of the other two wines in balance and elegance, but all played well together and had noticeable similarities in presence of oak and overall freshness.
Quite enjoyable. (2278 views)
Tasted by Bottle Dog on 7/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Very dark red with a little browning tinge to it. Nose is subdued a little, but earthy and brooding, with mushrooms and very ripe dark fruits. Maybe sandalwood. This wine is perfectly balanced and drinking very well now, but still will last many more years and likely improve. Some nice acidity and super fine tannins. More fruit on the palate. (1074 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 11/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Bordeaux 2011 - 10 Years On - 30 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. A few observations: 1) As expected, it's a mediocre vintage with many wines lacking depth and mid palate weight of great vintages. My average score for the reds was 91.3 pts vs group scores at more recent horizontals for 2010 (93.0), 2000 (92.7) and 2009 (93.9). 2) I expected more green/unripe notes and drying tannins but that is not the case (hence the solid 91.3 average). Most wines showed well-made (with only 6 out of 30 reds rated below 90 pts). 3) Left bank (average 91.8 pts) clearly trumps right bank (90.6) thanks to more mid palate substance. 4) Virtually no wine showed a) over extracted and already dying and b) with far too much ripeness. Both 2009/2010 (and 2015/2018) have several wines with these problem. 5) Most wines are in a good drinking window. Although not yet with tertiary complexity, the structure has softened and the wines are open (even without extended decanting). 6) Unfortunately (due to price), the best reds were Le Pin (97+ pts), Margaux (96), Petrus (96) and Mouton (95). 7) Good vintage for Sauternes it seems (we tasted only two) with a surprising Giraud (96 pts) beating a too sweet Yquem (93).

TN: More interesting nose than the other in this St. Estephe flight with some coffee and fresh, fine dark fruits, minerality and earthy notes. Also on the palate, this is luxurious, fine, fresh, round and harmonious with fresh leather, wet earth, smoke, minerality, circling around a ripe dark fruit, cassis core. Fun to drink, this wine has fine tannins but could still use more time to get softer and become more weightless. Promising wine and easily 92-93 pts. (4080 views)
Tasted by JimHow on 7/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Deliciously boring. Wonderfully austere. Classic claret.
Like Jacques's 2011 Domaine de Chevalier, I was immediately struck by the inky black color of the Calon Segur.
Like Johnny Depp, I could drink this every day of the week. Perhaps surpassing Lynch Bages as my favorite estate.
Had this with Nic, Danny and their better halves in Quebec a few years ago, and then with Patrick on a later date.
I'm glad I still have five more bottles, I'll drink them over the course of the next decade.

Tasted by Brett Pitt on 1/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Will further improve (546 views)
Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 4/16/2018: Locked up fairly tight right now, though not completely closed. Flashes good potential, with medium plus concentration and a good spice component. Medium to strong tannin. Revisit in 10 years. (7281 views)
Tasted by Ianjaig on 6/29/2017 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured but sipped at slowly. Beautiful, stunning nose of expresso and initially cherry dominant on the palate. As it opened up, decent, chewy tannins become more prominent. Fell away late palate though and so demonstrated a bit of hollowness at the end. Day 2 and the nose is much more muted. Still a tad hollow as it doesn't hit the back of the mouth. Disappointing overall. (8364 views)
Tasted by batas on 5/27/2017 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly decent for the vintage (7192 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 3/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Youthful nose, dark fruit, smoke, spices, tobacco. Good ripeness and lift. On the palate good acidity, powerful but polished tannins, very dark and brooding. Quite restrained but good length. Needs time. 91-92+ (7745 views)
Tasted by physicsfan3.14@gmail.com on 10/9/2016 & rated 92 points: Way too young to drink this wine. It was a very good wine - but give it another 10 years. (6410 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/17/2016 & rated 91 points: MW Institute 2011 Bordeaux Tasting: Cassis. herbs and moss. Like the acid profile, gives things a good spark and the fruit flows well. Good composure and style. (5571 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 1/20/2016 & rated 85 points: Institute of Masters of Wine - 2011 Bdx Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): Slight burnt buttered popcorn - partly oak toast, partly diacetyl?
Dark cassis. Elevated acid - nice and bright! The popcorn is off-putting. (5885 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 12/11/2015: My first Calon Segur. High quality oak and nose but a bit underwhelming on the palate. Working itself out at the moment - leave for 5 years. (4869 views)
Tasted by Phenol73 on 11/14/2015 & rated 92 points: (Decanter Fine Wine Encounter 2015) :: Expressive, lifted, if still quite tightly bundled. Cassis fruit, some dried leaf notes, very fine tannins and an excellent structure. A full, complete mouthfeel and med+ finish. (4414 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/8/2015 & rated 93 points: In yesterday's Pontet Canet vertical I was very impressed by the 2011 - here is another one that did extremely well in this difficult vintage. Lots of ripeness (unlike the 2001 Calon Segur tasted alongside), polished and round tannins, super balance, firm tannic grip. Fresh with juicy, unmasked fruit on the palate. Very good length. 92-93+ (3944 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/3/2015 & rated 90 points: The Institute of Masters of Wine Annual Bordeaux Tasting - 2011 Vintage (Vintners Hall, London): Impressive nose, fresh and herby, leafy very Cabernet nose. Dark fruit, good level of fruit, could have been a bit fresher but overall a great effort and a good wine. Definitely ( and adjusted for price) one to pay attention to (90) (4637 views)
Tasted by batas on 6/7/2015 & rated 92 points: Good nose and quite ripe and round after 2 hours. Very decent for a 2011 (3582 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
