Tasted by cos65 on 12/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Clear ruby garnet, pink at the rim still
Some dried cranberry and cherry nose
Great balanced juicy acidity, completely resolved tannins, this is in a fabulous place and drinking perfectly after 20 years in storage. Ready now, but in no immediate danger. (838 views)
Tasted by JohnLI on 10/29/2023 & rated 93 points: In a great place. Lots of plum black fruits and earthy flavours. Medium length finish. Hard to see how it could get better. Very enjoyable. (846 views)
Tasted by Malarky997 on 10/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Better than I expected (888 views)
Tasted by Tao on 9/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Marvellous! As a second wine, a pure joy to drink! Classy and please read my previous notes (1011 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 6/24/2023 & rated 90 points: My first ever Bahans, and one from the incredible 2000 vintage too! Chateau Bahans is Château Haut-Brion's red second wine, and was later renamed Le Clarence de Haut Brion in 2007. A Cab Franc, Merlot and Cab blend.

Whilst SKT had bottle-breathed this for over 3 hours prior to dinner, there was still that pervasive but not unpleasant mild funk on the nose. Sweet spices then followed, and quite a distinct garrique aromatics and raspberries with chocolate on the palate.

Acidity and tannins are very much resolved, with tobacco and some smoke on the finish. However, I craved for nuances of minerality as I would have expected from a Pessac-Leognan. Medium-long length finish on this fully mature offering, I would recommend to drink up.

2000 Bordeauxs continue hold on to its legendary status. we are reminded that the 2000 Bordeaux wine was the first perfect vintage for both banks in over a decade, since 1990. They were years which excelled in the Medoc, Pomerol, St. Emilion and Pessac Leognan too.

The winter was mild but warm, and the wet spring created potential problems with mildew. However, from July, a spectacular summer dominated with hardly any rain until mid-September when it rained. Sunny weather returned for the October harvest only broken by a single day of rain, helping the parched vines.

We were all in awe with "Oohs" and "Aahs" when SKT unveiled what would turn out to be a 2nd wine of a First Growth. How generous! Bottle 3 of 9 at Champignon, celebrating L's belated birthday with WMK/H, Eng/A, SKT/LMK, LMC and ourselves.

Tasted by DaleW on 2/17/2023: . Not usually a 2nd wine buyer, but this is really quite nice. Fully resolved tannin, rich cassis and plum, accented with tobacco and gravelly soil notes. B+ (1107 views)
Tasted by Tao on 12/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Sumptuous leathery dark fruits all over the nose, sweet rich palate, still a little young at this point, a beautifully made second wine with a lengthy finish! (1382 views)
Tasted by ocfriday on 11/25/2022 & rated 88 points: Soft tannin's, light to fading fruit. Drink now. (1235 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 9/17/2022: Thought this was fully ready to drink and likely past it's prime. Tannins are silky smooth now. Best with lighter meats. (1646 views)
Tasted by rykennedy55 on 5/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Didn’t really open up over three hours. Delicious, silky, and could tell there was some magic here at one point, but just a little over the hill. Drink up if you have it in your cellar still. (1752 views)
Tasted by concord on 12/18/2021: Still drinking very well, mature, but not over the hill. Dark fruits. Have extended drinking window. (2206 views)
Tasted by Peech on 11/10/2021 & rated 91 points: from magnum. triple decanted 30 minutes prior to serving. Smoky, grilled meats, nice ripeness from the fruit, with some fragrant cedar notes. (1360 views)
Tasted by Brolawa on 10/14/2021 & rated 90 points: This wine is tasty but it feels like an echo of the Chateau or Mission. Maybe most importantly it is missing the feral, leathery notes of the Chateau. Solid but not exceptional. (2145 views)
Tasted by ocfriday on 8/30/2021 & rated 91 points: Strong tannin's up front in the first hour, as it opened, the muted fruit came out better. Not sure it will improve more - but it is holding the line. (2012 views)
 Tasted by fpch@outlook.com on 7/16/2021 & rated 96 points: Wow! (1985 views)
Tasted by ocfriday on 5/10/2021 & rated 90 points: Classic - soft fruit with nice tannins. Time to drink. (2099 views)
Tasted by Peech on 12/24/2020 flawed bottle: from magnum. decanted 1 hour and 15 minutes prior to serving. A little corked perhaps, definitely bretty, very chalky and dusty with the first pour. Pretty savory but OK on the palate. Three hours after decanting, the bretty notes kinda faded and graphite showed up. Much better after extended aeration. (791 views)
Tasted by hargy on 12/14/2020 & rated 93 points: the last of my bottles and this was such a surprise after many disappointing bottles - mature, complex and long, it was sensational - it does show that well made wines do need time (2396 views)
Tasted by wa2ofd on 11/27/2020 & rated 91 points: Soft, some earth...easy drinking...not overly complex...very nicely paired with veal. (2032 views)
Tasted by redders on 9/6/2020 & rated 92 points: Still deep red. Very young appearance for a 20 year old wine. Opened for 2 hours then decanted an hour before drinking which was about right. Initial nose black currant then warm earth and brick. Still on cusp of primary and secondary. Silky smooth on palate with beautiful texture and intensity. Still some tannin on the finish. This has improved greatly since the last bottle a couple of years ago. It will improve for 5 years and last another ten on the plateau. Delicious with pot roast topside dexter beef. (2327 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 8/21/2019 & rated 91 points: I got in on this one towards the finish. Served blind. My guess was northern Rhone Syrah as it seemed to have a hotter type of character to it with a little bit of savory notes on the nose and entry. The middle of this Wayne developed a hint of herbaceous nest, tobacco, hint of mushroom and starting to get a little bit of that brett influence. Finished with more of a medium-bodied character. Not really a whole lot of sweet fruit going on here.... This one was a little bit dark and dank. I do not believe this wine is going to get any better in the bottle although it's good cellaring there's probably five to seven more years left. (4219 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 7/5/2019 & rated 94 points: A remarkable wine that needs to have a couple hour decant and remains vibrant. Old world nose, more subtle than overpowering. Dark red hues. After a couple of hours, becomes a full bodied incredibly smooth wine with just the right amount of dark red and blue fruit. Pairs very well with food. Above average finish. May need to buy the '18 futures. (3503 views)
Tasted by acyso on 1/13/2019 & rated 90 points: Vinetasters: Pessac-Léognan (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Fairly restrained nose, with a good balance of fruit and dusty, earthy notes here. The palate is a bit taut and seems fairly lean, with some more red-fruited inflections. Good dusty tones on the palate; just a tad too young with the tannins not yet resolved. My 2nd, group's 3rd. Rockss and Fruit (3/13/2005)
(Chateau Bahans Haut Brion) This was shockingly open with classic Graves on the nose. Weedy tobacco, tar, leather, dark berries and mineral. Sappy and full of fruit in the mouth with an excellent finish. Even more open on day 2 with more sap and density. If anybody has these crack one open as it is singing.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
