Community Tasting Notes (average 94.6 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 111 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pjhr on 8/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Delicious cab with similar tasting notes to the previous bottle. (814 views)
Tasted by Wineson on 7/23/2023 & rated 95 points: Almost a little too sweet. Someone said it was a little like port. (789 views)
Tasted by KenK on 6/9/2023 & rated 96 points: Big and richly concentrated with dark berries, chocolate, and toast. Milky smooth and delicious coming accross young and very fruit forward. This thing is packed and hedonistically powerful. A wow wine if you like them big. (1001 views)
Tasted by Jzboxtas on 12/4/2022 & rated 95 points: Delicious. Fruit forward, no tannins. Jammy. (1167 views)
Tasted by BerkeleyBoy on 6/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Loretta and I had this with grilled rib eye, potatoes and veggies on a hot June night. I expected the wine to enhance the meal, but it bogged it down. Thick, syrupy, too much oak. Barely made 90 in my book and definitely not interesting. (1448 views)
Tasted by Jonathan T on 6/7/2022 & rated 97 points: I would give this a 97 if you like the Maybach style, and a 94 if you don’t. I’m assuming most people reading this already like TRB and especially Maybach. It is so rich, decadent, opulent and plush. Not a lot of subtlety but tons of blueberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate molten lava cake. Tannins are soft and integrated. There is a port-like quality that makes it feel more desserty and less a wine to pair with complex foods. But for sure a boys night at a steakhouse is what this wine was born for. (1158 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 1/8/2022 & rated 95 points: Layers of dark blackberry, cassis, and chocolate notes on the expressive nose and palate with spice and hint of floral notes. Tasty acidity with resolving tannins on the long finish. (1349 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 11/7/2021 & rated 95 points: Consistent with my Oct 2020 notes. Enjoyed over three evenings. Excellent even on day 3. (1389 views)
Tasted by King Cab on 8/30/2021 & rated 95 points: This is awesome. Its classically structured and beautifully textured with pure delineated black fruits, rubbed lead pencil tip.
Nose is fragrant from a foot away; blackberry and Creme de Kirsch. This is totally fleshed out with nary an edge, it shows it's class and pedigree well.
Mouthfeel is creamy and soft-coating with all the black fruits, this goes long and remains consistent throughout. Perfectly balanced, this is just pure joy. The favorite on the table and there were some beautiful wines on that table.

I remember when this came out, there was some controversy from a major critic to which I had already tasted it and disagreed whole heartily. The critic was scheduled to be at on of my CLONYC dinners and I reached out to the winery. Both the 2010 Materium and 2010 Amoenus was sent. The critic re-tasted and believed his first impression was caused by mishandling of that sample, maybe open too long. It was a fun evening.

Tasted by gharter on 8/2/2021 & rated 95 points: Decanted for 2 hours and it benefitted. Great nose with cherry, blackberry, cassis, smoke, graphite, smoke, tobacco. Lots of flavor showing blackberry, cassis, tobacco, cherry, smoke, graphite. Well balanced showing nice acidity. The tannins have softened in the long finish. Really good now, but no hurry to open my last bottle. (1160 views)
Tasted by msuwine on 1/30/2021 & rated 94 points: This is the vinous equivalent of a high-quality piece of chocolate: it is tasty and complex, but it’s still a piece of candy (albeit a very good one). The rich and saturated flavors that the Materium typically offers are present but less pungent, as the wine seems to have aged more than matured. It's still tasty and a lot of fun, but I would have probably enjoyed it even more at the 4-6 year mark.

Dark purple in color and full in body, the wine offers incredible aromas of cherry tart, red licorice, and menthol (that could be bottled as modern Napa Cabernet.) The flavors are more straightforward, with notes of blueberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate, followed by a sweet finish that doesn't have a lot of lift. Decant at least an hour, to blow off some of the juiciness, and watch out for sediment, of which there is plenty. 14.8% alcohol. (3031 views)
Tasted by Myman24 on 10/10/2020 & rated 96 points: Classic TRB cassis galore and my kind of jam. Beautiful nose and amazing finish. So good!!! (1936 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 10/10/2020 & rated 95 points: I poured it into a decanter and let it breathe for 1.5 hours. An amazingly sweet and aromatic nose. You're left hoping it tastes half as good as the nose. For me it loved up. Not overly acidic but not flabby fruit. Its just right. Mellow with fleshy sour cherry notes. Note: I had this after a juicy bourbon burger hot off the grill. Flavor profile very likely impacted. Also, had after some Ridge Zinfandel earlier in the day. So the contrast was notable.  Tasted by Bcw1989 on 9/12/2020 & rated 94 points: Fantastic wine and drinks great with food or without food. Dark black look to it with lots of blackberry and tobacco flavors. Finish was very long and truly and enjoyable experience. Over the evening, detected a bit of chocolate taste to it. Delicious. (1285 views)
Tasted by clayh55 on 8/23/2020 & rated 94 points: Superb Napa cab with 2 hours of air. Cocoa, charcoal, graphite, black currant notes. Immediately on opening had a little vegetal green pepper that blew off in 20 minutes. Definitely meditation wine to be enjoyed over a few hours. (1358 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 8/14/2020 & rated 96 points: From a magnum. A tremendous showing, a spot-on, full-throttle, luscious Napa giant in very fine form. Powerful black and blue fruit, some smoke and peppery graphite. What a treat. (1096 views)
Tasted by George Lopez on 6/6/2020 & rated 95 points: This isn't a big Napa fruit bomb--it's a really tasty wine made in the Bordeaux style. Definitely needs to decant for at least an hour or two. I bought this magnum six years ago and was glad I waited. There's still a lot of life in this Materium. Cheers! (1170 views)
Tasted by Red Sox Fan on 5/31/2020: Not bad, but the texture was a little grainy. This bottle would have merited a strong score if it possessed the silky texture mentioned by others. Purchased recently in the secondary market from a reputable dealer, but of course that’s no guarantee. The cork was intact but did break on the way out. Anyway, I’d recommend an hour decant if you have (or buy) a bottle. (1027 views)
Tasted by VinoDiver on 4/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Wonderful nose but needs a couple hours to round out the fruit and weight in the wine. After the two hours this is a dense, lush, velvety wine. Paired great with sous vide prime rib eyes. (1145 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 4/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Rich, ripe, and wonderful. There is a flavor here that I can't quite identify that is holding me back from a higher rating, but the fruit, structure and super fine focused tannins here are all top notch. Very good, drinking well now right out of the bottle, but even better with a little air. (1244 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 3/25/2020 & rated 94 points: Very nice. Great depth, mocha, cassis but I was really expecting fireworks (1227 views)
 Tasted by havana4 🍾🍇 on 3/10/2020 & rated 96 points: Stunning.
Cassis, chocolate, vanilla (1273 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 1/1/2020 & rated 94 points: Thick, dense purple with aromas of vanilla, varnish and green pepper with the varnish burning off with air time. Full bodied and mouth coating jammy with plum and vanilla on the palate. A touch of extracted sweetness creeps in occasionally. Good acidity in the middle and mint on the finish. (1598 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 4/26/2019 & rated 90 points: I was very disappointed. Tones of prune and olive killed the wine for me. (2443 views)
Tasted by wcooper on 11/1/2018 & rated 95 points: Opened about 2 hours prior to dinner. Started out a little heavy and jammy. Second glass was really singing with the silkiness I have come to expect with this wine.

Excellent to drink now with a suggested 1-2 hour decant but this baby still has a long life ahead of it. (2337 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
