Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 32 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by forceberry on 10/12/2015 & rated 93 points: The mid-tier Verdicchio of Sartarelli, made solely from selected grapes of their oldest vineyards. Fermented and aged in stainless steel. 14% alcohol. Annual production approx. 90,000 bottles.

Somewhat developed peachy yellow color. Quite rich and complex nose with aromas of ripe yellow stone fruits, yellow gummy bear candies, some developed waxy notes with fruit that is taking on a sweet marmalade edge, hints of almondy nuttiness and a touch of mature creamy / buttery character. On the palate the wine feels moderately full-bodied and even a bit oily, yet also high in acidity giving the wine even somewhat crisp bite and good, robust structure. There are flavors of citrusy fruit, some exotic spice, modest stony minerality, a little developed honey character and light hints of crushed almonds. Overall the wine feels that is has concentrated a bit with the age, becoming somewhat weighty and rich, yet still carrying that lemony acidity typical of the variety. The wine finishes with a long, rich and powerful aftertaste of ripe citrus fruits, sweet red apple, some stony minerality, a little exotic spice and hints of almond.

Overall this is a surprisingly serious, rich and structured Verdicchio that is already starting to show some signs of age with some sense of concentration and honeyed fruit, yet the wine is remarkably fresh and taut like a wine that was bottled only yesterday. Very impressive effort that is at 5 years of age only suggesting of the potential the wine can show with age. Obviously a white meant for the long haul. No reason to open any time soon, even though the wine is drinking quite nicely already – it would be just waste of potential. Stunning value at only 13€. (1571 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 2/23/2015: In decline, tasting sweeter now. Drink. (2634 views)
Tasted by Easter Everywhere on 1/1/2015: good, rich, touch monolithic (1045 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 12/19/2014 & rated 87 points: This bottle seemed a litte tired - nutty mor than fruity, maybe a tinge oxidised. Still decent, but the prior bottle was so much better. Still very good for the money. (2606 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 10/17/2014 & rated 88 points: Simple, balanced, fruity, with a medium bodied round mouth feel. Short finish. Easy to drink but ultimately not complex enough to be intellectually satisfying, just a nice glass of wine. (2715 views)
Tasted by Richard123 on 8/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Deep gold, with beautiful apricots and other stone fruit dominating. Nice acidity, good for sipping or pairing with food. (2157 views)
Tasted by brooklynwine on 6/1/2014 & rated 87 points: Golden yellow in color with a nose of peach, butterscotch, honey, and mild bourbon. Full bodied and rich, decent complexity, but lacking in acidity. The bottle tastes a bit off and I just didn't love it. I have one bottle left so will let it sit and see if it comes together.  Tasted by Richard123 on 5/10/2014 & rated 90 points: Fantastic wine, representing a fuller style of white wine. Peach, buttery flavors went down easily with enough acidity to pair with food and be refreshing. (1382 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 2/26/2014 & rated 88 points: Medium to full body, reminiscent somewhat of a Grand Cru Pinot Gris but (with less complexity) with more salinity as well as notes of lemon rind on the semi-dry finish. Would be a good pairing for a spring salad with mustard dressing and a plate of crudo. Best served at room temperature. 14% ABV. 88+ (1501 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 12/14/2013: I enjoyed this with turkey tetrazzini in the wake of TG. My wife finds this a bit rich. It is a bit richer than the base bottling, but I like them both, and don't find this to be heavy. Good wine and good value. (1577 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 7/8/2013 & rated 91 points: Fun, delicious, uncomplicated wine that is wonderful accompanying Italian seafood dishes. There is a bit of complexity here, saline balanced by fruit and residual sugar, but don't think too much: just enjoy! (1750 views)
Tasted by patsox on 7/8/2013 & rated 91 points: Ditto to what BernieMSY said! Just sorry it's my last bottle. (2122 views)
Tasted by Darrencrow on 6/20/2013 & rated 84 points: A little oak and a little sweetness. Honeysuckle. Good acid and a little floral too. (1720 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 6/9/2013: This bottle showed like the one from 3/24 and we enjoyed it. Some bottle variation but the clean ones show well. (1937 views)
Tasted by VTCellarDweller on 6/4/2013 & rated 91 points: We finished up the 6 bottles of 2009 purchased last summer and enjoyed every bottle. So, I went for 6 of the 2010 and popped the first one last night with a tofu-vegetable stir fry. I was not disappointed. It was every bit as good as the 2009. This drinks well solo and will pair with a wide range of dishes. It has a very solid mouth feel without being clumsy and it holds well across the palate. There is a lovely citrusy-chalky-honeydew-green apple flavor, crisp mouth feel, good complexity, and a lip smacking finish. Dare I say....an Adriatic Sancerre? (1930 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 5/30/2013 flawed bottle: I bought six of these from a reliable retailer I use frequently and there has been quite a bit of variation among the bottles. This one was very slightly corked. One left and I hope it shows well as the clean bottles are very nice. (1421 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 4/28/2013 flawed bottle: This bottle seamed a little off to me. Not as crisp and minerally as previous bottles and it seemed slightly oxidized. (1360 views)
Tasted by patsox on 4/21/2013 & rated 91 points: Outstanding again. (1391 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 3/25/2013 & rated 93 points: Really nice. Green melon, and residual sugar balance by a complex, ever so slightly bitter undertone. Good finish. Great value. Delicious. (1445 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 3/24/2013: This bottle showed like the first one with real nice minerality. Some saline too. Richer and deeper than the vernaccia before it. Tart lemon, lemon custard, earthy minerals, and a long saline finish. Very good. (1334 views)
Tasted by patsox on 3/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Great wine! Simultaneously light, tart and rich, with a long, pleasing finish. Outstanding with tuna in tomatoes and onions. (1387 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 3/19/2013 & rated 91 points: Delicious fruit underscored by a hint of minerality. Each sip demands that you take another. Complex, with a lingering finish, this is a great value. Pair it with Italian seafood dishes. (1388 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 3/17/2013: This bottle showed significantly less mineral than the bottle last week. That one I thought was very minerally but this one hardly at all. Same ripe lemon, some lemon custard, a little vanilla. Good acidity. I liked the more minerally bottle better. (1340 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 3/13/2013: Wow this is minerally. You can smell and taste it. It smells great with citrusy fruit and mineral overtones. Lots of nectarine and citrus fruit with some earthy mineral and a long saline finish. There is a fair amount of texture for a white and lots of crisp acidity. I like this but I'd be hesitant to open one for anyone who wasn't into acid and minerals. (1353 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 3/12/2013 & rated 90 points: Similar note to last bottle, but even a little more tasty this time around. (1321 views)

Sartarelli

Producer website

Located in the heart of the Marche on the west side of the Esino river, Sartarelli encompasses 66 hectares of vines located 300-350 feet above sea level. With an average vine age of 33 years and soils that are characterized by calcareous and marl stone, owners Donatella Sartarelli and her husband Patrizio Chiacchiarini are producing wines that are very terrior driven and classic to the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC.
Donatella and Patrizio firmly believe that the wine is made in the vineyard. To this end they are practicing sustainable farming, only using pesticides when absolutely necessary and allowing grasses to grow in order to replenish nutrients into the soil. During harvest, which usually occurs between mid-September and mid-October, they make multiple passes through the vineyards, taking only the fruit that is at its optimum ripeness.
All of the grapes are soft pressed, with fermentation for the Classico and Tralivio being done in stainless steel and the Balciana and Passeto in cement. No oak is used at all, allowing for the purity of the fruit to come through. The end result are artisanal wines that are clean, soft, and layered with complexity.
