Tasted by EngrTech on 2/19/2024 & rated 75 points: Mediocre: a drinkable wine that may have minor flaws (130 views)
Tasted by racheld61 on 1/27/2024 & rated 89 points: Apricot and fresh fruit. (123 views)
Tasted by valecnik on 1/11/2023 & rated 89 points: So. Much. Apricot. Dried apricot, fresh apricot, apricot jam. Honeyed sweetness and a luscious mouthfeel. The characteristic petrol note is there, but not prominent. There's some smokiness as well. Moderate to low acidity. Tasty, albeit not very complex. (538 views)
Tasted by Border Boss on 9/5/2021 flawed bottle: This must have been a defective bottle. There was really no sweetness or fruit at all. Nothing like a typical Sauternes. (1187 views)
Tasted by GregB57 on 5/24/2020 & rated 89 points: Not a top Sauternes, but nice for the price point. Honey and stone fruit. Beautiful god/orange color. Good with blue cheese. (1640 views)
Tasted by deschamp52 on 1/22/2018 & rated 89 points: I love sauternes but this was missing some of the usual complexity.
Beautiful texture/viscosity and intensely pleasurable to drink but was expecting more. (3014 views)
89+? (3077 views)
Tasted by FLXHoneymoon on 6/18/2017: A bit hot and unbalanced but pretty good for the price point. Probably a better pairing out there than butter pecan ice cream though. (3360 views)
Tasted by yarnon on 2/14/2017 & rated 92 points: Color of honey.
Intense nose of honey, orange zest, a bit of earth.
Full body, sweet, honey, zest, acid, long finish. (3266 views)
Tasted by bboard on 6/10/2016: PnP. Fresh, mouth watering acidity, pineapple, botryis, relatively simple finish, better over few hours... (3534 views)
Tasted by flussier on 3/12/2016 & rated 89 points: Robe assez pâle. Arômes de fruits tropicaux et au nez une touche de poivre. Simple et assez léger, à boire rapidement. (2933 views)
Tasted by bboard on 1/30/2016: I think this works as an intro to Sauternes as it represents Sauternes traits in a simple way. A bit one dimensional however. Its got honey, apricot, hints of floral, some spices, but lacks real acidity & botrytis. Good QPR for an "cellar defender" for Sauternes... (2475 views)
Tasted by sct1000 on 11/8/2015 & rated 89 points: Still showing youth. Paired with vanilla Souffle. (2706 views)
Tasted by Ombibulous on 6/13/2015: Not ready to drink yet because it hasn't really turned orange. Average of all drinking windows through 2011: 4.8 to 12 years, or here, 2015 to 2022. (3006 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 5/12/2015 flawed bottle: Negociants Australia New Release Tasting: Corked. (3244 views)
Tasted by kfinsrud on 4/18/2015 & rated 88 points: Fra 375 ml. Lys gylden farge. Lukt av aprikos, honning og litt tropisk frukt. Frisk i munnen og balanserer bra mot sødmen. Nyansert. God lengde. Fin intro til Sauternes for de tvilende. (2628 views)
Tasted by Deux Chevaux on 2/11/2015: Deep golden, nicely rich, a little bit more acid would make it even better. (2413 views)
Tasted by SiR on 12/25/2014 & rated 89 points: 13.5% - Clear, med to deep gold / clean, med+ intensity - honey wax, bartlett pear, baked apple, nutty / sweet, med+ acidity, med+ body, med intensity, med to long length. Not super complex, but works like a charm with foie gras & pain aux epices. (2185 views)
Tasted by minndavid60 on 11/8/2014 & rated 88 points: A tasty if somewhat ordinary Sauternes/Barsac. Nicer on the nose with fresh aromas of lemon meringue and nut butter. On the palate, flavors of slightly underripe banana, although a bit heavy handed and shortish on acidity. Nonetheless at $15 for a 375ml, this is a nice go-to when the after dinner sweet tooth hits.  Tasted by Rossodio on 10/9/2014: Drank this along from another house's second wine from the same vintage, the Lions de Suduiraut 2010. I am familiar with the styles of the Guiraud and Suduiraut houses; it is interesting how they incorporate their magic into their respective second wines. The Petit Guiraud follows along with the other vintages of this wine I've had ('07, '08, '09). They seem to improve a bit vintage over vintage. This wine still has a bit of a ferric/bitter taste in it that is interesting and also adds a bit to the complexity. It is pared down compared with prior vintages which is a good thing. Otherwise, spricot and pear caramelized with some brininess on the nose and palate lead to a nice finish despite the slight twinge of the ferric taste noted above. Still, easy to drink and quite enjoyable. I used this wine along with the Lions de Suduiraut to introduce a couple of folks to Sauternes whose only dessert wine experience was New York dessert wines and they thoroughly enjoyed it. They weren't big time wine people so I spared the heavier hitters in the cellar. Maybe next time...

Interestingly, I have not seen crystals precipitate in my bottles of this or my other bottles going back to the 2007 vintage (which are still in my cellar). They age similarly to their classified growth cousins, but unfortunately the less desirable characteristics seem to be amplified with age. I will have more of the older bottles coming up soon... as these second wines seem not to be made for more than a few years' aging. That said, it would be interesting to see where this goes through 2020. (2151 views)
Tasted by aajder on 10/8/2014 & rated 87 points: Good color. The nose is a bit one dimensional, showing aromas of honey, apricot, flowers, and a hint of spice. This is medium bodied on the palate, with good concentration and decent finesse. The medium length finish features just enough acidity. This lacks botrytis character and richness. (1964 views)
Tasted by brooklynwine on 8/12/2014 & rated 88 points: Nothing special but nice. No formal notes. (2018 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 5/18/2014 & rated 87 points: Very approachable with less complexity and weight than the Grand Vin, good acidity and easy-going. Nice as an aperitif. 86-88. (2248 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 4/26/2014 & rated 88 points: Commanderie de Bordeaux tasting/dinner. This is a lovely sweet wine that is well balanced. Not too sugary. Nice and simple but well done. (2539 views)
Tasted by CraigC_UK on 3/23/2014: For a petit wine, this is wonderfully balanced and beyond expectation. Honeyed fruit, totally satisfying. (2152 views)

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
