Tasted by rjquillin on 5/6/2018: Very solid SH Mountain Barbera; he just seems to know this grape. (1567 views)
Tasted by Zo65 on 4/30/2017 & rated 86 points: Candy and not much else (1755 views)
Tasted by Ann&Wayne on 8/6/2014 & rated 88 points: Wonderful wine at sunset...on the lake...with my wife. (3035 views)
Tasted by Ann&Wayne on 7/23/2014: Took to Fred & Barb Beckers. We all drank it and all liked it. It was served with Fred's famous Pizza in the Green Egg. (2793 views)
Tasted by klezman on 7/18/2014: Delicious. Nice balance of fruit, oak, tannin (minimal), leather, and spice. Great CA take on Barbera, but not as elegant as the white label version. (4158 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 5/5/2014 & rated 87 points: Interesting, and puzzling. I admit I was expecting California fruitiness but got something more earthy and cherry-tart. I can't fault it: The fruit is skillfully rendered and there's spice and Old World accent. I just can't find anything terribly outstanding or exciting. (2244 views)
Tasted by ICaWineGuy on 2/13/2014 & rated 87 points: Nice, with old world stylings. See previous notes. (1962 views)
Tasted by ICaWineGuy on 12/6/2013 & rated 87 points: See previous notes from 8/13. Still drinking really nicely; well-balanced with more noticeable blackberry and cherry notes on the palate this time. I also noticed that the palate far exceeded the nose in this bottle. (1066 views)
Tasted by MadisonWIneGuy on 11/30/2013 & rated 88 points: Haven't had a Scott Harvey wine that I haven't liked yet. Cherry and some spice & acidity, it's nicely balanced with a medium-plus finish. Represents the varietal very well, and would certainly buy again. Another excellent QPR from Scott Harvey! 88 pts. (944 views)
Tasted by VeniceCalif on 11/3/2013 & rated 87 points: Deep ruby with a brownish tint. Nose is woody, a bit raisiny. Some cherry flavors along with iron filings in a medium-tart package, It's not bright with fruit, rather it's earthy. Finishes with drying light tannins. Pleasant overall, decent QPR. The winemaker calls this an old world style Barbera; that is correct. Good for midweek drinking. (1056 views)
Tasted by klezman on 10/3/2013: Immediately juicy and delicious. Light plum, touch of oak spice and vanilla. Nose is fairly closed, but hints of smoke and dark berry. Nicely balanced overall, good on its own or with food. (2103 views)
Tasted by ICaWineGuy on 8/6/2013 & rated 87 points: Not overly juicy nor overly oaky, just a good well-balanced Italian-style red with flavors of blackberries, cherries over the top of a nice earthy quality. Soft, lingering finish. (1153 views)
Tasted by Furry Goat on 7/24/2013 & rated 88 points: Baking spices, citrus notes, strawberry & cherry. Long citric acid finish that is unique and pleasurable. Relatively simple but well done. (1066 views)
Tasted by Furry Goat on 7/10/2013 & rated 88 points: Cherry dominated with a great acid profile. Delicious with braised short ribs. (972 views)
Tasted by Furry Goat on 6/8/2013 & rated 88 points: Cherry and acid driven. Some tar and maybe an herbal component. Well balanced. Nice finish. (1038 views)
Tasted by Furry Goat on 6/2/2013 & rated 89 points: Nose of cherries, some floral, and a pleasant mustiness. Some alcohol on the nose too, but not an offensive amount. Pleasant nose. Wine enters silky smooth and is light to medium weight; ripe red fruit and acid oriented (getting a little citric acid vibe too that reminds me of kiwis and oranges); it has a 10+ sec finish that focuses on fruit and maybe a little bit of spice and acid. Very pleased overall. The rim of the wine bottle broke as an aside, hopefully this is an anomaly and not an issue with the lot. (974 views)
Tasted by StageOneRacing on 5/23/2013 & rated 88 points: A bigger bolder Barbera than others I've had. Nose was a bit musty, but the flavor was all fruit, very good. (948 views)
Tasted by trifecta on 4/17/2013: No detailed notes. Bottle disappeared after a hard day of work. Great fruit and balance. Still prefer the reserve, but the mountain selection is ridiculous QPR. Amador Barbera is the real deal. (1512 views)
Tasted by mcsac67 on 12/5/2012 & rated 87 points: Earthy nose. Flavors of cherry and raspberry and a bit of red licorice. Slightly dry. Pleasant, with low tannins and a bit of acidity. A solid wine at a good price, but a bit lacking at the finish. (1605 views)
Tasted by jsna on 9/14/2012 & rated 88 points: Smells and tastes of red cherries, semi dry, good wine. I am not that familiar with Barbera grapes but drinkable.Probably kicks butt with spaghetti and meatballs. (1692 views)

Scott Harvey

Producer website
Winemaker, Scott Harvey
Growing up in California’s Sierra Mountains Region, Scott developed a keen interest in winemaking as a high school exchange student in the Rhineland Pfalz region of Germany. Scott attended California State University at Sacramento before beginning practical Enology training at Montevina Winery in Amador County. Back to Germany in 1975, he apprenticed at K. Fitz-Ritter Winery while attending the Weinbau Schule in Neustadt. Once again returning to Montevina Winery, Scott focused on all aspects of winemaking and running a winery. From farming the grapes to effectively marketing the wine, Scott solidified his knowledge and experience. In 1978, at the age of twenty-three, Scott took over as Head Winemaker for Story Winery, also in Amador County. In 1979 Scott developed an ambitious winery plan for the Santino family. As Winemaker and General Manager of Santino Winery, Scott is credited with placing Amador County firmly on the California wine map. Crafting the best wines possible from the soils and climatic conditions of the region, Santino and later Renwood benefited from Scott’s German training and innovative style. Becoming one of the leading wineries in Amador County, and garnering critical acclaim, the wine world was paying attention. Amador County was now recognized as a world-class wine-growing appellation. In 1996, Scott was recruited as Partner, Winemaker & President for newly purchased, Folie a Deux Winery in Napa Valley. Combining forces with Lead Partner and renowned Winemaker, Richard Peterson, Ph.D, a formidable winemaking team was launched. Scott pursued his commitment to award-winning Cabernets made from the Estate Vineyards in Napa Valley while continuing his passion for Amador County Zinfandel. Access to Scott’s original Grandpère vineyard in Amador County and close relationships with premier Amador County growers, resulted in award-winning wines all around for Folie a Deux. In addition, Scott’s creation, the “Menage a Trois” line of wines, was an instant commercial success. In 2004, Folie a Deux, now a respected brand, was sold to Sutter Home/Trinchero Winery. Scott was finally positioned and ready to start his own venture, and he had the ideal partner - his wife, Jana, a wine industry veteran. Scott Harvey Wines, the initial line of wines in the “Creative Wine Concepts” portfolio, was created out of market demand for Scott’s wines - “niche wines that over deliver.” The Scott Harvey line focuses on Scott’s roots - Zinfandel, Syrah and Barbera from the Sierras. Approachable, food friendly and full of luscious fruit, these wines have struck a cord in the marketplace. Scott has hit his stride with his new mantra.

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
