Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 55 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ccn on 11/18/2023 & rated 91 points: This is just singing. Moreau’s riper style is lovely. Greengauge / lychee / gooseberry, rich and long, sharp acidity to balance it out. Other TNs call this very dry but in the context of GC Chablis this is at the richer, riper end. (434 views)
Tasted by Zazzaman on 4/30/2022 & rated 92 points: Half case recently taken from bond. Mid yellow, citrus and floral scents on nose, rich complex palate, starting citrus ending more biscuits, delicious. (1467 views)
Tasted by Jshire on 10/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Wonderful white burgundy. (1719 views)
Tasted by aChave on 6/20/2021 & rated 95 points: Outstanding bottle. (Shows what this wine can do when not pre-moxed.) Decanted for 60 minutes. Big, rounded, but with fine structure. Very long on the finish. Mostly delineated orchard fruit flavors. Blossomed steadily during the dinner. This last bottle was the best. (1894 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 6/6/2021 & rated 93 points: At age 10, the 2011 Moreau Les Clos is still quite young - but with a bit of coaxing all of the expected elements are present with Meyer lemon, oyster, lime, yuzu combined into a pleasant package. Lovely richness (if not to the level of Raveneau or Dauvissat) balanced by fresh acid and a medium finish. Its best days are ahead. (2756 views)
(1778 views)
Tasted by ccn on 1/31/2021 & rated 90 points: Still young and fairly tightly wound. (1270 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 9/24/2019 & rated 92 points: No real notes, but can write that this wine is excellent, dry, has little if any discernible oak, and tastes terrific. There is nothing like this out of CA. (1888 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 2/11/2019 & rated 91 points: classic Chablis, with steely citrus and a delightful complexity you would expect from a Grand Cru and a producer of this ilk 91 points (2016 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 2/7/2019 & rated 95 points: So much better than the first bottle I can hardly believe it. Definitely quite dry, but in the most pleasant way. Great minerality without the chalkiness of a lesser Chabils. Tasted even better the next day! (1918 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 12/3/2018: Color showed little advancement.
Nose was beautiful lemon and orange citrus with mango. There were times you could distinguish all 3, and other when they would meld.
Great balance with acid and minerality.
Was best as it warmed. (2175 views)
Tasted by nectar14 on 6/21/2018: This was a wine of great balance and purity. I wouldn't say it has a ton of power, but it fills the palate with Chablis character and echoes wonderfully. Take some time to pay close attention and sit quietly with it, as it has a lot to say but doesn't say it loudly. (2477 views)
Tasted by aChave on 4/28/2018 flawed bottle: Clear light caramel/lemon. Color alarm!
Aroma not a disaster at first, but progressively worse over one hour. This is 2nd bottle that’s suffered. Not a good track record!! (2065 views)
Tasted by vinhslee on 3/11/2018 & rated 92 points: The aromas leap out of the glass right away. Plenty of lemon, lime and wet stones.

The palate is a good mix of lemon peel, lime, green apple, white flowers and nutty flavours. Mild salinity with woody undertone. Acidity is not as high as I wish for. Not as layered or rich as the best samples in Les Clos, but good effort.

Very long (mostly salinity and oaky) finish. (1898 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 2/18/2018: Nose - orange rind, per Brian marzipan
Mouth - lithe, lovely mineral, sappy . (1911 views)
(1872 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 12/31/2017 & rated 95 points: Very good chablis ! Minerality and the lemon based acid make a complex wine with great depth . The medium + body stays for a quite long finish. Better than i hoped for. And room for improvement. This has a long way to go. Drink or hold . I would hold if i d had any !!!! (1572 views)
Tasted by aChave on 7/22/2017 & rated 95 points: More what I expected from this wine as compared to the previous bottle, which showed more advanced character. Clean with lovely fragrance and complexity. Underlying acidity in perfect balance. Minerality very fine; hugely satisfying. Grand cru in every respect. (2265 views)
Tasted by aChave on 6/30/2017: This bottle seemed advanced. Impressive length and finish with touch of chalk at the end. Up front, very mature and broad fruit... more mature than I would expect. I suspect this bottle was more forward than the others I have. We'll see. Likely bottle variation. 91 for the current experience; should be better based on the substance here. (2169 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 6/10/2017 & rated 92 points: Pale straw, very clear.
Lemon zest and creamy curd nose.
Soft and pulpy up front. Very refined, pure style. Lemon curd and white flowers. Finish is long and lingering, good acidity and zesty minerality to close. Delicious now, open, no need to wait. (2267 views)
(2567 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/6/2016: Medium yellow. Beautiful mix of ripe citrus and green seashell elements. Glorious Grand Cru Chablis texture-glycerine cut by chalk/limestone and wonderful acidity for the year. Fresh and youthful, lots of chlorophyll and lime on the palate. Some of the greenness may reflect the vintage, but it works well, adding complexity to this wine which has a super acid/sugar balance. This outstanding bottle had some sentimental value since it was generously gifted to me by Christian Moreau following a visit and tasting at the domain. Thank you, M. Moreau, and chapeau! (2727 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 6/19/2016 & rated 92 points: It took three hours for the '11 Les Clos to truly open up, showing a bouquet of yellow flowers, seashell, raw almond, pear, young mango, and wax. On the palate, on found soft textures with hints of ripe apple, spice, honey and wet stone minerality. It finished long on ripe pear, ginger and spice. (2654 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 1/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Double Magnum. Floral, soft, citrus and hint of honeysuckle. Delicious. (2733 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/9/2015 & rated 93 points: Very consistent with prior times tasted. Lots of orchard fruit, ripe and tasty, with some citrus background hints. Starts ripe and fun, ends crunchier and mineral-driven in a classic Chablis style. Easy to enjoy right now. (3513 views)

Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils

Producer website

Christian Moreau, former director of J. Moreau & Fils in Burgundy's Chablis region, is unveiling a new project in Chablis. Three wines of the new Christian Moreau Pére & Fils label—a Chablis 1999, a premier cru Vaillons 1999 and a small amount of grand cru Les Clos 1999—will reach wine shops in the United States this spring.

The new wines are made from purchased grapes, but Moreau will regain the use of his own premiers and grands crus vineyards in 2001, after the expiration of his contract to supply grapes to J. Moreau & Fils, which is now owned by Burgundy giant Boisset. Among Moreau's vineyard holdings are 25 acres of grand cru Vaudisir, Valmur and Les Clos, including the tiny Clos des Hospices, a coveted 5.3-acre monopole, or single-owner vineyard, in the heart of Les Clos.

Joining Moreau as winemaker is his son Fabien, who studied enology at Dijon University. "There will be no more vins de table," said the elder Moreau. "I want to stay on the small side and control the quality." To achieve growth from 250 cases to 6,500 cases annually, Moreau purchased one of the William Févre wineries from Bouchard Pére & Fils.

The new Christian Moreau Chablis, Vaillons and Les Clos, not yet rated, will sell for about $17, $28 and $50, respectively. Frederick Wildman & Sons of New York, whose contract with J. Moreau & Fils ended recently, is the importer, continuing the relationship that Christian Moreau's father, Guy, began in 1938.

Les Clos

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos exact outline

Les Clos is arguably the finest grand cru vineyard. Les Clos has greater density and power than the more elegant Vaudésir It is a deep and compact wine. The strong mineral core is of polished steel and this is enveloped in a luscious depth of fruit. If Vaudésir is the queen of the grand crus, Les Clos is the king. It ages wonderfully – a minimum of 10 years. It’s a large sunny vineyard, (28.39 hectares) facing south. It is quite rocky and has a higher level of limestone.

It is also a vineyard in Bussières

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
