Tasted by dbenglis on 4/20/2024 & rated 97 points: The best of the best. Had a Latour 82 the night before and my palate leans toward the Lafitte. Mature and ready now (would like to hear how it could evolve from here). Novice collector. (352 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/2/2024 & rated 97 points: The best examples of this are simply great. Elegant, floral, refined, and packed with sweet, spicy, red fruits. cigar wrappers, currants, and cherries. There is length, energy, lift, freshness, and complexity. Drink from 2024-2040. (1305 views)
Tasted by sdr on 1/27/2024 flawed bottle: Whole Lotta Lafite; 1/26/2024-1/27/2024 (Wine Watch, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida): This was the most "interesting" bottle of the vertical. Purchased many years ago from a New York merchant, the back label clearly stated it was recorked at the château in 1994. On closer inspection, the capsule and label were somewhat suspect, especially since the label was very slightly smaller than usual. The cork also did not seem entirely correct. Still, you want to drink it to see what it might be but if you do, you still can't tell anything except that it is not 1982 Lafite and it is not a good anything, being much too dry and tasteless. (1599 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 10/28/2023 & rated 96 points: Ojai Food + Wine Festival; 10/26/2023-10/29/2023 (Ojai Valley Inn): Spectacular! Still so much body on this one--the years have not made it any less of a brute. (2622 views)
Tasted by Limes on 10/7/2023: Remarkable (2536 views)
Tasted by yossarian.livez on 7/17/2023: First bottle after a month long sabbatical from wine.

A bit of a downer on the pop. Very slow evolution. Appears extremely young despite a reticence on the fruit. A few waves of green notes. Over several hours it didn’t gain much but with a bit more elegance and minerality showing. Not overly powerful. Tannin still present but not overt. It’s nice but nothing to write home about. This from a bottle of zero provenance, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Day 2. Much more evolved. Supple tannin folding in. Fruit while reticent holding, much more cedar and mineral and vinous expression. Still not first growth expectation, but its gaining. Back in the fridge for day 3. (3318 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 6/24/2023 & rated 96 points: In a great spot to consume. Fully integrated, it pours to a ruby red with no bricking. Excellent balance and pungent dark red fruit. I don’t see this improving, as with many 82s I’ve had recently this is in it’s drink now phase (3343 views)
Tasted by BradE on 6/9/2023: A beautiful ex-chateau bottle. It showed perfectly even as a pop and pour late in the afternoon. (3138 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 1/22/2023 & rated 95 points: blind, tasting together with CB, Lafite and Margaux

For everyone the undisputed winner. Powerful, still fruit but cedar wood, tobacco, and Paulliac typical pencil notes. Beginning to reach his peak. Decanted for 2 hours. There was a glas left for the next day. Still firm and sublime. No hurry. 99

Margaux
The most balanced one but compared to Latour not the length and power. Close to his peak. For me third in range. 96

Cheval Blanc
The first we tried, I was sure it is not CB, because I missed the pepper. Good bottle, but I had it better. My second place. It felt really young. 97

Lafite
In between Latour and Margaux. Not so powerful, not so elegant. I had the Lafite in better shape. It feels to decline in his performance. We will see what the next bottle will show. 95 (4424 views)
Tasted by dchain on 12/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Stored from release. Light ruby, very cedary, lots of mineral, iron and rust. Fruit is faded and weak. Drying up, a challenge to enjoy this despite all the pedigree. Definitely would have been better 10 years ago. Never been particularly impressed with 82 Lafite. (4013 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 12/7/2022: Beautiful bottle that I'd rate a 95, but I'm not entering a score because I believe it's on the decline and would recommend drinking sooner rather than later. Other 1982s that I've enjoyed (Latour, Pichon, Mouton, etc.) were still hitting on all cylinders, but this was missing a few. (3824 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 11/11/2022 & rated 97 points: 1982 Bordeaux (Jason's house): Decanted about an hour. This was a bonus bottle, served blind. The label was unrecognizable to me from mold and being bin-soiled. This took a good hour in glass to get going and was a bit challenging initially. Which was an odd situation since I didn't know what it was. It really smoothed out with time and was in the running for wine of the night in my opinion. Elegant, soft bordeaux palate with leather and funk. My score went from 92 to 97 while evaluating it. (4201 views)
Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 11/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Wine weekend in the Twin Cities; 11/10/2022-11/12/2022 (Where the frosty air is refreshing.. kind of): [Served double-blind]: Did not know vintage, producer, or varietal until revealed later.

N: Subtle port nose, dark green underbrush, gentle minerals, and wet, earthy forest floor.

P: Amazing liveliness and freshness that told me this still has the vigor to keep going. Dark red fruits, forest floor, and very gentle savory and dry minerals (like slate).

A nice vibrancy to the palate that keeps the “dying fruit” alive, like granting it immortality. Unfortunately, as we all may have seen in the movies, seems like with more age as an immortal, or air time for this matter, the fruit becomes more and more frail and fragile. As I was nearing the last sips, the wine seemed to show more fading fruit. Drink now as I don’t know how much longer the fruits can hold. (4569 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 11/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Guys Night - 1982 Bordeaux! (Jason's House): 3 hour decant (decanted when we sat down to dinner...was part of our last flight 3 hours later). This wine was part of a special flight...I only had one of each of the following: This wine, an Haut Brion and a Lafite, which quite honestly wasn't sure it would even be good, so I really wanted to compare the La Mission to its cousin Haut Brion, and I added the Lafite as a blind wine, because it seemed good when I opened it, and was curious how it would compare to the other two wines in the flight, without any bias. Of course, per the theme of the dinner, all were 1982's.

We had already had impressive showings from a few other 1982 Bordeaux wines (How can you ever go wrong with this epic vintage? Although, as with most tastings, you end up giddy, like a kid in a candy store who has just been told to eat what you want! I will say all three wines were outstanding! Score one for getting lucky, as none were purchased on release! This trio reminded me of a horse race....the LMHB took the early lead with a strong nose and a glorious palate...then the Lafite drove up along the rail to challenge with a perfumed nose and some awesome fruit on the palate coupled with tertiary goodness...the Haut Brion tried to challenge late, but was just slightly outclassed by the other two, although it remained only a step behind the leaders throughout the race! In the end, it was a close race, but the aromatics coupled with a well-balanced palate between fruit and tertiary flavors pushed the Lafite to front of the pack by a head! OK...so back to this wine....

TN - I may have been jaded slightly because although I served this wine blind, I knew what it was (so not blind for me). I like to think I was still being objective, and at any rate, I had to be at least as objective as I was with the HB and LMHB, because I knew what those were too! This wine had the most perfumed nose of the trio (not surprising), and smelled like classic Bordeaux with plenty of florals and sweet fruit on the nose, paired with tons of tertiary goodness from leather, earth spices and tobacco to hints of spice and cedar. The palate was silky and followed the nose with red and black fruit leading the charge, along with some violets and all the other flavors attached to the aromatics. The only thing that stops me from scoring this even higher is that as sexy and lovely as this wine is, I can't help but feel that for my. palate, I would have enjoyed this even more a few years back when I feel these flavors would have been more pronounced. I think this wine is on a very slow decline, i.e., I don't see it getting any better for my palate, but if I had more, I wouldn't be in a rush to drink them. 97+ points (out of 98, so far) with no reservations! (2940 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/10/2022 & rated 96 points: Guy's Night: 1982 Bordeaux -- One for the Books (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Very dark red/purple almost youthful color, 4mm transitional margin. Three hour decant, then drank a glass plus over 3 hours plus. This was in a trifecta of killer '82's including '82 LMHB, '82 Haut Brion, and '82 Lafite. The Lafite was a mystery wine ringer drank blind in the grouping. Interestingly, it was the fruit and purity of the red fruit that stood out initially for me. Char, dried earth, cherry, red currants and dark berries, leather, and violets on the nose. The palate seems the most resolved with a wonderfully silky texture, classic Bordeaux character, cherry, cassis, dark red berries, splendid spice notes, integrated tannins and such elegance. It is always a bit of a conundrum to drink a wine like this blind, but it was fun to watch it evolve in glass and become what you would hope for. In the end the Lafite was the most elegant and dare I say feminine of the group.

For the first two hours or more, the LMHB at its peak was clearly the stand out, By the end of the night (4hrs in) the the HB and Lafite had come together more harmoniously as the LMHB lost a little of the nose whilst the other's evolved further to make things very interesting. The Haut Brion and Lafite were nearly on par with each other giving a subtle nod to the HB, and the LMHB was just a step behind then. None of these wines are in any danger of falling off in the near future. This was an incredible trio, thank you Jason for sharing these wines. 96 to 96+pts. (2304 views)
Tasted by dlduchon on 10/23/2022 & rated 95 points: Lovely old Bordeaux with telltale, classic Lafite profile. Holding up well, and should decline very slowly. Price tag on the bottle from the original purchase was $89.99! (2163 views)
Tasted by Peech on 10/7/2022 & rated 95 points: top shoulder fill. first taste of filtered dregs from bottle 30 minutes after decanting, showing lots of smoke, grilled meats, cigar smoke, leather, and almost a hint of brett. Acidity was slightly on the high side, but sweet fruit started to show.

Double-decanted back into bottle 1 hour and 40 minutes ater first decant, and served 2 hours and 40 minutes after initial opening. Smoke was still front and center, and cedar notes started to show up. Pretty soft on the palate. Some cassis notes showed 3 hours after initial opening. About 3 hours and 40 minutes after opening the nose softened so it was no longer punchy with lots of smoke, and more fruit showed up at around 4 hours. After 4 hours and 40 minutes we had good balance between the smokiness and the fruit, and was a little peppery. Some 5½ hours the body got lighter and acidity became dominant, and it was clear the wine was going downhill. (1974 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 10/5/2022: Very top shoulder fill bottle. Nose is replete with evergreen, mint, fresh red fruits, fresh tobacco, and earth, very impressive and attractive. On the palate this is fairly subdued, with mellow flavors of plum and herbs, medium acidity and offering no pronounced finish. This bottle was at least 5 years past anything like its prime. (2014 views)
Tasted by Triforwine on 9/17/2022: NO official rating as the bottle was slightly flawed.
It had dropped the fill level from low neck to mid-shoulder since about a year ago.
Cork saturated, decanted at 1862.
Initial funk, then a hint of maderization on the nose which resolved quickly. More evidence of it on initial taste. Over the course of the evening, it did improve and the underlying greatness could be realized. (2550 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 8/28/2022 & rated 95 points: Deep garnet in colour. Medium nose intensity with char wood, toast, pepper, spices. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Personally feel that it could be better but perhaps provenance. The nose should be more aromatic and perfumed but not this bottle. (2654 views)
Tasted by Seb Frefranc on 4/9/2022 & rated 99 points: I am very thankful to have had the honor to drink this elixir from a great bottle. Top shoulder. Cork soaked but complete. Right from the start powerful and rich. This is incredible stuff. Everything is dense and so balanced. The tannins are ultrafine and give this 40 year old wine the backbone. This is why Bordeaux is Bordeaux... This is why 82 is 82... This particular bottle was at prime. I could also give the 100 points but just want to save it for one little more notch (whatever that might be) ... (4103 views)
Tasted by grub94 on 3/18/2022 flawed bottle: Birthday opening that really disappointed. Have enjoyed this many times but this bottle. Wasn't corked or cooked. Tasted like a lesser 1975 Cali cab that was well past its drinking window.....mono-dimensional. (3730 views)
Tasted by oxwombat on 3/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Opened in Courchevel.

Unfortunately, I felt as if this was a little bit over the hill. Hints of greatness but past prime. Fruits still there but faded, and everything was just a bit mellow.

I admit, my personal preference is for wines which still have strong fruit - so perhaps this wasn't quite to my liking even if it deserved a higher score.

At this age, there will be bottle variation, even if they have been stored well. I would start drinking up for those who are lucky enough to have a few still lying around. (1508 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 1/30/2022 & rated 94 points: (4571 views)
Tasted by hedgefund on 1/8/2022 & rated 99 points: My wife's birthday was yesterday (1/7) and for the occasion I broke my rule and opened up an '82 Lafite from my collection. I decanted for 2 hours. This is just beautiful with amazing complexity. Began with cherry and flora, it then evolve into chocolate, meat and pencil shavings. I could go on forever. This is definitely a wine not to be missed and will last another 30 to 40 years.... (4408 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
