Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 4/26/2024 & rated 89 points: Less Celebrated France WIMPS #176 26th April 2024 (La Trompette, Chiswick): Dark fruits, some pain grille, some marron glace, a little hoisin and some flecks of white chocolate. Palate shows this wine has time ahead with some tannins that still need some time to resolve. Based on other vintages of this wine I'd say another 5-10 years. Great potential though. (165 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 4/26/2024 & rated 89 points: Powerful and rich fruited. Tannins are grippy but mellowed from earlier bottles of a few years ago. Going to hold my last bottle for a few more years before thinking of opening (66 views)
Tasted by phynes on 8/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Very enjoyable wine. Dark and brooding but with a nice nose of caramel and hot berries. The wine is a little rough on first taste but after half an hour smooths out nicely. Enjoyable on its own but lovely with food and cheese. Drinkable now but suspect at least 10+ years of good drinking ahead. (1238 views)
Tasted by t0pshelf on 4/27/2022: Absolute steal of a deal from costco at $23.99. Far better than the typical bargain bordeaux style wine. Despite the inky dark color I found this to be a bit on the mild mannered side with not much of a nose & a short finish. The light notes of anise and loads of minerality really make this wine shine ... paired with a lighter pasta dish and it was perfect. (1342 views)
Tasted by sirwine on 1/2/2022 & rated 92 points: This wine was beautiful. Dark purple and fresh. Very smooth and velvety on the tongue. While there was still some fresh fruit flavors, this was dry and mature. Ready to drink now but I’ll wait at least another year to open my last bottle . (1701 views)
Tasted by kiropeter on 10/8/2021 & rated 90 points: My first acquaintance with a wine from Madiran. Full color. Lots of flavour. Black pepper, plum and black berries. Has aged well since purchase. One more bottle of this vintage. Will save it for a year or two. For the money spent a really nice wine. (1855 views)
Tasted by SeaKnollCellar on 9/15/2020: Serve with rich fatty food. BBQ (2759 views)
Tasted by chrisdgsmith@hotmail.co.uk on 6/18/2020 & rated 90 points: Black red wine, very opaque almost to rim. Viscous legs. Slightly hot nose, not very expressive. This is surprisingly approachable on the palate, chock full of ripe black fruits with underpinning ripe tannins. I have some sympathy with the previous taster's note that this does not necessarily scream Madiran/Tannat but it is still a lovely glass of wine. The structure and ripeness should augur well for further medium term cellaring, which may add interest but it is good now. (2187 views)
Tasted by eboracum on 1/19/2020 & rated 90 points: Judging by TN and memory, this is very like the Montus 2009, even down to the 15% alcohol. It is objectively a very good wine with its suave fruit, round undertow, depth, smooth texture, good balancing acidity and tanins enrobés on its firm finish. However I don't recognise this as the sort of Madiran for which I acquired a taste in the '90s. It could come from anywhere or any grape. (2694 views)
Tasted by Clabbe on 12/1/2019 & rated 91 points: Long smooth complex taste. (2685 views)
Tasted by sung251 on 5/4/2018 & rated 90 points: what a heavy and overwhelming wine with thick viscosity. Really needs a nice decant to get some of the initial funk to blow off and to get more of the fruit to the forefront. It was a delightful and interesting wine with still a good amount of life ahead of it. Don't hestitate to open today for a interesting experience but would also be interesting to try 5 years from now as well. (4642 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 12/10/2017 & rated 89 points: Took quite a while to open up. Definitely one for the decanter if you're looking to open this now. It I'd say no rush, hold on to them a few more years if you can.
PnP and consumed over 6hrs.
Initially deep and intense dark fruit with a little stalkiness, grippy tannins as expected. Lacked acidity to begin with but gained more freshness/acidity with time in the glass/open.
Definitely improved over time and will score higher next time either having been cellared longer or will have had a good decant.
Watch out for the chunky sediment towards the end of the last glass (thankfully my patented spiral pour technique prevented any unwanted bits in my glass ) (4764 views)
Tasted by Beerzebub on 11/9/2017: P&p. Suprisingly, fairly expressive right away. Dried and fresh dark fruit and violet, with earthy/stony, savory/meaty accents, and some clear but seamlessly integrated spicy oak. Tannic, but not crazily so; just nice and chewy. Good acidity keeps everything together and lifted. Tasty dark fruit, with a fresh streak. Doesn't offer tons of complexity or nuance, but does have good depth/substance/character; enjoyable and a decent value. Seems like drink or hold. (5248 views)
Tasted by Man in Black on 5/11/2017: Deep garnet colour. Moderate intensity nose showing aromas of white pepper, cedar, dark plums and hints of dark cherries.

It is dry in the mouth with a moderate acidity. It has a medium+ alcohol and firm coarse tannins. It is full-bodied with pronounced intensity flavours and a lingering finish.

It is a very good quality wine. The finish is very persistent and it has a good fruit concentration in balance with the tannins. However it could be more complex. It needs more time to develop more interesting tertiary aromas and polish the tannins a bit. (6301 views)
Tasted by NineteenEightyTwo on 3/13/2017 & rated 88 points: First time I've tasted this type of wine. Opaque crimson color. Dark nose of kalamata olives and hickory wood, with a slightly sweet raspberry aroma lingering around the periphery. The palate is packed with red fruit, though still very tight and with ample tannins on the finish. I wish I would have decanted this a few hours, or waited a few years. There's promise here, but the wine is still very young and difficult to evaluate (not least of all due to my inexperience with the Madiran AOC and Tannat grape). As a guesstimate, I'd give this 3-5 more years. (6368 views)
Tasted by pjaines on 3/4/2017: A wine that delivers every single thing you would expect of a Madiran in spades. Deeply coloured, crackling with deep aromas and crackling with a nice spine of acidity and some minerals coming through. A big wine, for sure, but it is balanced and well made and nothing feels out of place. Deep black fruits on the palate with some perfurmed cherries on the nostrils. Really great stuff for a cold evening. (5064 views)
Tasted by Thoughtful on 1/28/2017 & rated 92 points: At a dinner party. Not very French. Deep, powerful, full of extract, excellent balance, still very young. Not for the faint hearted. Smooth tannins so drinkable. Years of life ahead. Interesting to see how it ages. Leave 3 years? (4111 views)
Tasted by Lilja on 1/19/2015 & rated 89 points: A good reminder of how good the entrance wine of Montus really is, and why it has been such a frequent name in many cellars!

Packed to the brim with a deep and complex nose. Lots of burned aromas, wood, herbs, thyme, rosmary and even green parsley. Tons of fruit, but in no way cooked, blackberries and blackcurrants.
Medium+ acidity, medium+ body, good fruit and high intensity. Really good length and very dry, slightly woody tannins. Finish is long, with a touch of bitterness. Will do well 5-10 years in the cellar! Very good for 200SEK ($24). (5292 views)
Tasted by Gece on 12/12/2014 & rated 89 points: Lots of everything: High acidity, rough tannins, blue-black color, and every dark and red berry you can think of. Huge mouthfeel. Quite good now, especially with decanting, but seems bound to improve over the coming years. (3529 views)
Tasted by WimHH on 12/9/2012: Folder Wijnkoperij Henri Bloem:
"Schitterende aromatische stijl en zeer expressief. Rood fruit van wilde kersen, mokka, iets groene pepers en citroen.
In de smaak de goede herkenbare ‘Montus’- stijl, duidelijke aanwezige tannines die bijdragen tot een mooie en
lange afdronk. Het nieuwe hout is al mooi verweven in de smaak, die de wijn volume en rijkdom geeft. Een duidelijk
herkenbare dominantie van de Tannat aangevuld met de Cabernet Sauvignon. Grote klasse. (drinken: 2016-2026)" (4773 views)

Madiran

Vin de Madiran (l'ESAT de Madiran)

The Madiran appellation is where red wines were born to go with magret and confit de canard. Alain Brumont is a master of this deep, dark-fruited, powerfully grippy style, the tannins melding satisfyingly with the fat of the meat. HT:
