Tasted by palfr2 on 4/10/2024: Home-drinking - July 2014 disgorgement. Dark copper colour. An elegant oxidative note jumps out of the glass. We are in the land of Sherry, Jura or Selosse wines. Clove spice is the more specific descriptor I can think of. The oxidative character is right at the limit where it moves from providing intrigue to outright defining the wine. I believe Egly has gravitated over time towards a more balanced style. Great length and persistence. This avoids the shortcoming of many BdNs which can border on inscrutable monoliths. This is fully resolved displaying many nuances. A food wine and I think the most singular in the Egly range though personal preferences may lead one to prefer the Rose, the VP or even the Vrigny.  Tasted by The_Cat on 4/1/2024 & rated 96 points: Delicious and complex very fine bubbles perfectly balanced acidity and excellent length (1184 views)
Tasted by fizz on 3/18/2024: Disgorged July 2019.
Complex nose of red florals, minerals, strawberry. Lovely intensity and texture in the mouth. Balanced, complex, good acid drive. Red fruits, salinity, stony minerals. Delicious tonight. (1631 views)
Tasted by astroman on 3/10/2024 & rated 94 points: Dinner with DC (San Shu Gong): Disgorged Jul 2011, stored for 60 months, hazelnut, oxidative, touch floral, good depth on the nose and palate with high acid. Much better on the next day with juicy palate backed with depth of flavours. Long finish. Impressive how Egly is able to age. (1522 views)
Tasted by palfr2 on 3/7/2024: I have had this Champagne in several vintages and it is established it is one of the leading BdNs in the grower world , possibly even in the wider Champagne world. Less mirabelle plum dominated than I have known it in other vintages. What strikes me is a cognac / armagnac taste albeit with bubbles. I feel the Egly BdN is very singular in taste. My sample size is not huge but growing. There was a lot of praline initially on the nose. It has Oxidative notes as can be expected with winemaking leaning that way and 10 years post disgorgement (1799 views)
Tasted by Julien D on 3/2/2024 & rated 95 points: Disg. 2004, most likely 1999 base. A lot of evolution in the color and nose. Nose is powerful and offers flavors of honey as well as mirabelle, lemon peel, apple cider, baked apple, sea salt and mushroom. In mouth, bubbles are still very much alive. Same for acidity. A lot of strength mid palate, making you wonder if that’s really a 25yo wine. Notes of honey, yellow apple, umami with nice noble bitters leading to a medium finish (1529 views)
Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 3/2/2024 & rated 95 points: DSG 12/2017.

On the nose, we immediately have a beautiful patina with salted butter caramel, a well-controlled oxidative side and an elegant vinosity on red fruits.

The last time I drank this wine was a 2020 disgorgement which left me with a feeling of controlled power. I expected the same thing, with added oxidation. However, this was not the case. The palate is much more serene with a magnificent depth and elegance, it's practically airy with a touch that coats everything. If the first sensation is airy and coats the palate, the second half of the mouth is much more powerful, but still masterfully channeled on vinous aromas, a controlled oxidative touch, it is caramelized with a splendid acidity, the all on a vinous bed of red fruits. The density and presence of this wine is enormous. Huge slap with a finish with admirable afterglow, still on this vinous/oxidation/caramel triptych which is shared between freshness and depth. Great saline length.

When I think Blanc de Noirs, I think Egly Ouriet. Great Champagne. (1601 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/23/2024 flawed bottle: Disgorgement unknown. Corked! (1927 views)
Tasted by RolfT on 2/2/2024 & rated 93 points: 07base 2013 disgorgement. Im a big fan of this wine and as always with these older editions the nose i absolutely wonderful. Mature, deep and a little cheesy - like a perfect 30+ year old champagne from a top vintage. This edition seems a little low on acidity and also very soft bubbles making for a slightly flat mouthfeel. Think its about time to either drink or sell my remaining 06 and 07 based editions and start enjoying the 09 and 10s to get a little more freshness, while I wait for the 08 and 12s to get into their zone.  Tasted by RobinTeo on 1/30/2024 & rated 96 points: NSG night at Duomo: Disgorged 2011.

Tasted blind, whispers of Selosse echoed around the table. Slightly oxidative with cream, toast, wild berries and caramelized apples. Fantastic depth and complexity throughout on the bouquet and on the palate. Creamy on the palate with textural brillance. This is superb and showing really well! (2106 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 1/20/2024 & rated 96 points: Consistently great. Last of my 04 disgorged bottles... same notes as previous bottle. Sad. (2168 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 1/3/2024 & rated 97 points: My last bottle of the 5/2016 dégorgement. Superb aromatic complexity, notes of brownish apple, honey, autolytic notes, tonic, also some red berries/forest strawberries, chalky minerality, also some spices, and some flowery notes too. Pretty full-bodied, with high acidity, slightly creamy mousse, but not many bubbles anymore, more vinous in texture as these great wines always are. Superb length. A super complex, perfectly mature BdN, drink up. Too bad these wines have become so expensive… a truly unique Champagne. (2446 views)
Tasted by Milos on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: No detailed notes taken during dinner. Satisfying end to 2023. (1546 views)
Tasted by PourritureNoble on 12/31/2023 & rated 97 points: 2015 degorgement
Long time I wrote a note, but this, for me, surpassed a normal wine experience.
Almost the last bottle of the year but also the best bottle (in years).
I give this 97 with hope there is still better juice (moments) but if it does not exist, fine by me.
Drank with lovely friends, foie gras, Belgian gray shrimp croquettes from Riedel performance Pinot Noir glass. Sure this also played a part. (1777 views)
Tasted by essenceofreal on 12/31/2023 & rated 97 points: Disgorged in 2014. My one and only bottle disgorged this date. Must find more!! My guess that means it was an 08 base. No wonder it was so spot on.

The finesse on this blew the 98 Krug off the table which we drank before this. Took about 30 minutes to open and when it did good luck to other bubbles trying compete.

Pound for pound, for me, Egly is THE BEST champagne house and then some. Second would be Winston Churchill, Bereche also on this list. (1699 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 12/31/2023 & rated 94 points: not blind, disg. 2012
By accident we the same wine but disg. 2022. I would go with the younger one . Both have power but this one is less elegant. Not oxidized. At his peak. I would nit wai much longer. 94 (1744 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 12/31/2023 & rated 95 points: blind, base 2014, disg. 2022
I thought of Cedric Bouchard, but this wine is more powerful. But compared to the past much more elegant and less oxidative. One of the top 3 growers for me. 95-96 (1558 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 12/29/2023 & rated 97 points: Tasting session. DG 2017. Very rich on the palate, complex and expressive aromatics. Low dosage, fresh finish. Grand in every aspect. (2046 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 12/27/2023 & rated 92 points: Good Pinots (including champagnes): 2015 base. Curiously honeyed and lots of bruised apple on the nose at the beginning so thought this was older, but palate was fresh with creamy red apple fruit. Didn’t like this much at the start but the wine gained structure and the sherry notes dissipated. Became a very serious, weighty wine. A very generous share but not sure if it’s worth the market price. (1648 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 12/22/2023 & rated 94 points: Golden color, loads of brioche, pain grille, herbe sechee au soleil… Very tasty and concentrated yellow fruit, nice balance and mineral, great Champagne!! (1516 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 12/2/2023: 50th Birthday Bash - night #2: Last wine of the night... one word... WOW! I liked this better than the 03 Dom P2 tonight. (2015 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/28/2023 & rated 95 points: Deg. May 2010. Dark master. Powerful wine with great depth, this is really a Pinot-wine, golden coulored, intense, hints of bread, coffee, chocolate, butter.
#JR&Co (2144 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 10/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Still a refined and rich bottle, but I am not sure of what direction it will take as it finishes its maturity in the tertiary realm. Less rich from the Pinot side in this bottle, and a higher acid profile. Went beautifully with food and ,while it is not as much one of my favorite champagnes now, it is alive and presenting well. A beautiful golden light amber color, with more citrus skin notes and less brioche and underlying red fruit tones. More in the orchard with stone fruit but only ever so slightly. Better with food now and the mousse is persistent and of a nice size. (2830 views)

Love (2404 views)
Tasted by peterchoy on 9/26/2023 & rated 96 points: Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of light gold colour, with persistent fine bubbles, rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of citrus fruit of lemon, green fruit of apple and pear, floral notes of honeysuckle, autolytic notes of yeast and biscuit, oxidation notes of sherry aromas, mineral notes of stony, maturity notes of hay. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with high acidity, the wine has medium alcohol, medium body, with medium (+) intensity flavours of citrus fruit of lemon, green fruit of green apple, autolytic notes of yeast and toast, mineral notes of stony, maturity notes of honey. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Excellent quality Champagne Blanc de Noirs with an intense nose, and even though the base vintage is of 2015, very recent from that perspective, it has undergone 6 years of ageing on lees, resulting in those highly complex aromas. On the palate it has wonderful acidity, giving vibrancy, energetic and lively, with wonderful finesse of concentrated and complex flavours and a fairly long finish. It is ready to drink now but can benefit from further ageing for another 3-5 years. (2606 views)

Rockss and Fruit (7/20/2007)
(NV Egly-Ouriet NV Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru "Les Crayeres") It was very bready, very yeasty with a nice very pale rose color. The palate was a touch out of balance but there was nice concentrated fruit and wonderful delicate mousse but this definetly was in the typical powerful Egly style. Not that refined. Drink with steak. Expensive too for what it is. The Pinot Meunier (Les Vignes de Vrigny) is way better and a much better value.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
