Tasted by RKcellar on 4/14/2024 & rated 92 points: My first fully mature Bordeaux. Sat upright for 3 days to work the sediment down to the bottom. Bursting with tertiary earthiness, leather, tomato leaf, basil/herb. evolved and morphed from red to black fruit. raisinated and caramel and then, at the finish, fresh red fruit. a fun experience worth seeking out (1264 views)
Tasted by Araldinho on 2/14/2024 & rated 88 points: Medium deep garnet.

Aromas of blackcurrant, black pepper, cedar, marzipan, geranium, prune and chocolate.

Chewy dry tannins. Blackcurrant acids and burnt toast bitterness.

Medium body

Palate of redcurrant, cassis , black pepper, sloe, thyme, rose, beetroot, espresso and smoke. Hint of vermouth.

A young, slightly tart and straight forward wine with dark and red fruit, bitter acidity and a succulent oaky finish. Drink within 10 years.

Tasted alongside Jaboulet, Chapelle, 1985, and the present wine showed equally good secondary and tertiary aromas but lacked the generosity and the balance of the matched wine. This due to lack of fruit and an elevated bitterness. (2327 views)
Tasted by amenges on 2/10/2024 & rated 92 points: Opened the bottle after previously Coravining. Decanted for roughly 8 hours. Significant leather and tobacco on the palate but did touch on some red fruit on tje finish. Relatively dusty with fine integrated tannins. At 28 years o would have expected a bit more. Liked the 2005 better. (1877 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 1/12/2024: First bottle of 6 bought on release. In a beautiful spot. All I was hoping for from St Estephe. Open and ready to drink with some teriary notes but still with a solid backbone. Bell pepper, cinnamon, red cherry, tobacco, and smoke. Excellent stuff! (2864 views)
Tasted by Vargasjavi on 12/19/2023 & rated 91 points: Nice wine, wished it had more kick to it. Strawberry with some terroir in it on the palate. No rough edges, pretty balanced. Drink now, not sure if it will get any better. (3029 views)
Tasted by winchester-xi on 12/11/2023: Very typical st estephe profile with depth and length to the fruit. Pretty well balanced at the moment between secondary and tertiary flavors. I do wish the oak treatment took up less of the foreground at age 28, but that’s me, I guess. (2815 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 12/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Second time in this bottle. Coravined. Gave it several hours to open up, cinnamon, cranberry, tobacco, and smoke, then finished with sour cherry and black tea. Dusty tannins on the finish. (2157 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 12/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Needed a few minutes to breathe just a hint of bricking, pretty red cherry, tea, hint of pepper, grilled beef and herbs, with a long finish. (2115 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 11/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Last tasted nearly three years ago, this is in its prime drinking window, and untypically forward for a left bank 1995. The more northern left bankers seem to be more advanced in general. For myself, this is the best Calon Segur drinking, and outshines the 1982. Everything is integrated with excellent balance and depth, with a decent finish. However, it does display some the characteristics of the 1995 vintage as a whole, with a crunchy tannic finish. (2391 views)
Tasted by tadams66 on 7/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Had with a great tasting from the 90’s. I gave this a 3-4 hour decant which it needed. It really opened up and had the great structure and grip but also beautiful cherries, currants, and blackberries. Also had earthy notes and some leather.

Was not the WOTN but did extremely well with the short ribs. (3468 views)
Tasted by VinDeVie_1 on 5/25/2023 & rated 96 points: 1995 Calon Ségur, wow. This is a classic example of a 1995 that has started to come out of its shell. I have seen many reviews where individuals bottles fall on either side of the ready not ready line, but this one certainly was. In fact, I would say this bottle reminded me why I love Bordeaux so much after several so-so showing of late this truly had the richness and the power to be a classic.

One knock here was an intial funkiness and out of balance greeness that subsided in about 15 minutes, I actually was afraid it was corked on first blush.

Nose:
-Leather
-Tobacco
-Touch of secondary/tertiary earth
-Black and red cherries and plums

Palate
-Juicy plum and cherry notes
- deep round richness
- well integrated tannins and oak
- touch of agedness

Given the initial funk and an 8/10 on the complexity front, this wine gets a solid 96.

Well worth checking your bottles now, but definently good in 3-5 years based on all indicators. (3159 views)
(4363 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 2/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Perfect fill and cork. Purchased on release and perfectly stored ever since. Healthy dark red in color with only a slight lightening on the rim. Still loaded with fruit and grippy tannins. Notes of earth, cedar and tobacco. This bottle, at least, is still too young and unevolved. (4620 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 2/14/2023 & rated 95 points: My Valentine wine, and it keeps getting better and better. Still quite vibrant with beautiful fruit, oak, smoke, touch of eucalyptus, secondary and tertiary notes, medium/full body, mollified tannins and long finish. Elegant and sophisticated. Long life ahead. (4418 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 2/9/2023: I am not sure whether to mark this flawed or not, but it was so disappointing.
Double decanted an hour before leaving the house to attend a dinner. Tasted over the next 2 + hours and it never got better. Nose was decent but seemed like all the fruit had fallen out of this wine and left just wood/cedar on the palate. Of the many bottles brought that night, it was the only one half full at the end of the evening. It had not seemed corked when I opened it at home, but it just never opened up.
Now, after reading a review for the 2000, if this could have been better with a 5 hour decant. Most of the reviews of the 2000 are disappointing and sound a bit like this one. However, the most recent with a 5 hour decant ‘found’ the fruit.
So not sure if my experience here was due to a flawed bottle or user error. (4551 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 12/31/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 4 hours before serving. Slightly dried cork that broke cleanly close to the bottom. An enticing St Estephe on the nose and the palate but it hasn't shifted an inch since a bottle opened in April 2020 and is still a brooding adolescent. The 1995 vintage in St. Estephe/St. Emilion really needs a lot more patience in my experience. We drank it alongside a 1986 Cos D'Estournel which was gorgeous and fully resolved...which I still hope this wine might match one day. 92+ (3013 views)
Tasted by Inban Reddy on 12/31/2022 & rated 81 points: Typical “leather” , violets and cedar on the nose.
Peppery, cinnamon and anise. Short finish.Blackberry and citrus tones at the end.
Hints of grapefruit peel.
Good but not great wine. (3163 views)
Tasted by BradE on 12/25/2022: Perfect shape, but still not showing a lot of fruit. A nice wine, but it will be interesting to see how/if this develops. (3043 views)
Tasted by Buck M on 12/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Nose oak and cedar taste a bit tight with Cherry light tobacco and some minerality. Aerated into decanter and consume over a few hours, kept half bottle for day 2 just corked overnight (2484 views)
Tasted by Border Boss on 12/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Double decanted four hours before service. Medium red color without any color loss. Moderate tannins with good acidity that's in balance. The palate is red fruit dominant, with a nose of cedar, a little barnyard, and leather. Classically Bordeaux, drinking well right now but with easily another 10 years of good drinking ahead. (2681 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 12/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Dinner with Friends (Aboyer): Double decanted about 7 hours before dinner IIRC. Garnet with slight bricking, this does not show its true age. Plum, saddle leather, red currant and wood smoke with a nice earthy/bretty Bordeaux funk. Full-bodied, with a bit of tannin to integrate, supporting flavors of dried herbs, black fruit and cigar tobacco. Excellent, with plenty of life ahead. (J&J) (2863 views)
Tasted by paulst on 12/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Light nose; sweet blackberry; elegant and long, sweet mocha finish. (2563 views)
Tasted by Stormo on 11/25/2022 & rated 89 points: A gift from my dad - a recurring theme.

Deep ruby red color, mild tannin nose. Not much fruit left, slight blackberry/cherry - mild tannins with soft velvet texture. Short finish, can taste that this used to be very bold but has turned to a delicate balance and body. Drank before dinner with some torchon and saved until after dinner to sip on and it still drank as well as when we started. Did not decant at all, but upon opening did have a musky scent that dissipated quickly. (If you have them - drink em!!) (2467 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 10/9/2022: This was a solid Bordeaux, but didn't do too much to impress me honestly. Nose was classic with some tobacco, leather, earth, and fruit in the background. The fruit never really became prominent; the palate had some grainy tannins still in evidence and this shortened the wine and left a clipped finish. I suspect cab/Bordeaux enthusiasts would like this more than I did. (3268 views)
Tasted by paulst on 9/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Cedar and earth; light berry; soft tannin; nice finish. (3117 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
