Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 19 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/30/2023: Pronounced nose lead by the smells of Cabernet. A touch of black currant leafiness, in the prettiest way. Just opened and super smooth and supple on the palate. Languid, serene, gorgeous. (670 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 9/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Medium nose intensity with notes of black current, black fruits, cassis, vanilla, spices, vanilla. Medium+ acidity and high tannin. On the palate, the tannin is rather subdued probably due to the merlot blend. Already drinking well and 2-3 hours of decanting will make the wine more approachable. (1463 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 9/22/2020 & rated 93 points: Like many other 2012s, the Clarence HB is already open and singing. This is not the most complex wine but it has a good precision and very good balance. It is driven by the Merlot with a beautiful softness and fresh red fruit. This pure, fresh fruit, the freshness overall is the highlight. Easily 92/93 points.

TN: Medium intensive nose displaying red fruit and minerality. Medium+ expressive palate with fresh strawberries and raspberries as well as some red currant. In addition a layer of minerality and hints of smoke. Not overly complex but well defined. Smooth tannins, good, well-integrated acidity, fresh and light with a medium- length.

Decanting: A short 30 minutes decant should do the job. (2528 views)
Tasted by IvanLi on 5/10/2019 & rated 95 points: A scary good Bordeaux. Based on the ratings I was expecting a pretty mediocre wine, but it was nothing short of great.
Pure ripe Cabernet fruit in the form of cassis, cedar and cigar tobacco, great Merlot with plush textures and flavors of earth, chocolate and plums, expensive chocolatey and smoky oak and warm pebbles from "the terroir".
Absolutely round in the mouth, great balance and most importantly a splendid combination of ripeness and freshness.
Very close to it's peak according to my taste, as it delivers primary (fresh fruit), secondary (oak influence) and tertiary (tobacco/leather) nuances in a very full package.
On the down side, the wine lacks a bit of depth and finish to catapult it into the 96-98 point range. (2597 views)
Tasted by Kwlharvey on 9/4/2018: Refreshing. Need 1 hour decanting. Fine tannic, Medium palate. I liked (2132 views)
Tasted by GeorgeGj on 12/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 1.5 to 2hrs. I find it still tight and with need for more time. Cassies and dark fruit, a lot of earth. I think will benefit with time and still a good wine. I agree may be a bit pricey for the taste but hopefully will be a much better wine soon (3110 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 11/6/2017: Trinity Wine Fair: The wine shows density in the nose with ripe red and black fruit, oak notes, elegant, the palate has ripe fruit, bitter notes, slightly grippy tannins so could use food, medium body and finish. (1184 views)
Tasted by wineordeath on 3/10/2017 & rated 88 points: Closed, slightly green nose, but with some plum and mocha. Same on the palate. Dry. OK, just not exciting. (2866 views)
Tasted by wkkan on 3/3/2017 & rated 91 points: No formal note here. Drink or hold. (2679 views)
Tasted by Nicholas81 on 2/25/2016 & rated 89 points: A rather delicate with very subtle cassis, dark berries, green pepper and earth on the nose. The palate was slightly lighter than medium bodied with medium tannins and was quite fleeting in it's fruit presence. The short finish had a slight burst of energy and rustic fruit. This was a very easy wine to drink and will probably be ready to drink within a few years. Quiet hard to predict where this will end up as the fruits were not showing but the wine had a very nice velvety smoothness in it's texture. But in the current declining Bordeaux market, there's probably more value and quality to be found in lesser priced first label wines. (3895 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 5/15/2015 & rated 90 points: Nice polish to the fruit, length, medium bodied, with freshness and ripe fruits with a lot of charm. There is a hint of rusticity in the tannins that can be sensed in the end note. (4987 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 5/17/2013 & rated 90 points: En primeur tasting of the 2012 vintage at Château Haut-Brion (Château Haut-Brion): Nose with dark berries, in particular sweetish blackcurrants, slightly green notes with herbs, some earth, very faint note of violets. Slightly more muted than La Chapelle. Palate with dark berries, rather hard, medium+ tannins. Difficult to evaluate, closed on the palate. Out of the tasted wines this one is the most difficult to judge where it will go. (89-91)? (5395 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/25/2013 & rated 90 points: With smoky red and dark berries, this wine has medium body with a short and sweet finish. 89-91 Pts (3835 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 4/8/2013 & rated 91 points: 2012 En Primeur - Kelly and Kevin’s excellent adventure; 4/4/2013-4/9/2013 (Bordeaux, France): Blueberries, blueberry jam, spicy mouthfeel, silky palate, good concentration. (5600 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
