Tasted by fcxj on 2/9/2018 & rated 88 points: Jasper Mugnier. There's a dustiness to the aromas that I find unappetising, also lacks clarity I prefer. Not a great vintage of this wine, for me. (2786 views)
Tasted by ASG24 on 12/23/2016 flawed bottle: Never had a Mugnier bottle that was corked, so this was surprising and very disappointing; and this was my only bottle of Musigny from this vintage. ☹️ (3322 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 12/3/2016 & rated 97 points: Surprisingly young for a 97. Lots of raspberry, cherry, some vanilla bean, Muscovy-duck type game, mineral on the nose. Potent; young and evolving. Absolutely silky palate but bigger than I would have expected for Musigny; the poise here was lovely. Really loved it. (4225 views)
Tasted by Burgfiendnyc on 12/4/2015 & rated 95 points: I don't think this wine exhibited the heat from the '97 vintage, if anything this showed that '97's are ready to be enjoyed. Pop and poured with a nose of red and black cherries, violets, truffles, and anise which after an hour or so the wine expanded and showed the iron fist wrapped in velvet aspect of Musigny. In a great place, definitely drink up. (3692 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 1/28/2015 & rated 91 points: A very pleasing wine and an excellent 1997, this was still marked by the heat of the harvest, giving the wine a bit too much clunky weight. That said, it was very enjoyable. (Betony) (4385 views)
Tasted by reichken on 7/10/2013 & rated 93 points: Ledbury- light purple color, clean smells of red fruits mostly strawberry with a little earthiness. Very clean and well made wine, a very nice drink with a med long finish. Close to elegant or sophisticated but not quite in this vintage (3424 views)
Tasted by Blake Brown on 6/14/2013 & rated 96 points: The nose strongly suggested immense pleasure was forthcoming and it was in spades; joining in with the spicy, floral and red fruit aromatics was lots of strawberry, raspberry and light red cherry all being delivered in a silky smooth texture all the way through the back end; it was pure joy in a bottle and early on, a hard to beat candidate for WOTD which it easily became for me. (2947 views)
Tasted by reichken on 3/2/2013 & rated 94 points: Fat Duck Lunch- clean purple color, a nose of strawberry and touch of animal The mouth had that great burgundy feel of energy but weightlessness. The wine was long but not endless and the tannins are pushing in around the edges. This was a real pleasure to drink and will continue to improve. It is a very good moose but prbly not a great one (3064 views)
Tasted by yacobove on 12/15/2012 & rated 93 points: Tasted blind. Had a beef blood/iron, green pepper and tobacco nose. There was a vegetal finish to this wine. I originally thought this was a late-80s wine from gevrey because of the power. Did not have the femininity of chambolle. Already developing tertiary characteristics, but more time will benefit this wine. (2823 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/26/2012 & rated 92 points: Acker Merrall BYO (Sepia - Chicago IL): Fresh red and black cherry aromas with modest spice. Ripe but balanced flavors with good spice elements in background. Some forest elements also nicely emerging. Moderate length, but very classically Musigny with some heft coming through at the end. This was probably the most I have ever enjoyed this wine in the 4 or 5 times I have tried it over the past decade. (3799 views)
Tasted by solace on 12/19/2010 & rated 96 points: amazing nose - one of the best I ever nosed. complex nose of sweet red cherry-fruit, lots of flowers, some bits of spice - tinge of very clean animal stock. You have to chase and think - and yet there is so much to chase and think about.
nose became more tomato and beef (veal?) stew but was very clean, beautiful, elegant.
palate did not match up. some alcohol and minerality that stuck out. tannins got in the way. (2995 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 12/3/2010 & rated 94 points: Kelvin's Bachelor's Party (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Clearly quality, an excellent wine, but this certainly showed some of the marks of the 1997 vintage. Nose was of the drop-dead gorgeous, to-die-for variety, but the palate was not quite up to that very high watermark. Popped and poured, and we left it to develop in our glasses after a few initial sips. Not decanting was probably the right thing to do with this one - it did get better as it sat in the glass, but started fading just a smidgen towards the end of the dinner. The nose on this one certainly grabbed your attention from the first pour though. Incredibly beautiful even on the first sniff, with flowers blooming out of the glass, orange tangerine, a punch of pure red cherries, some meatiness in the background, wood spice, some boiled herbs and winter melon and little wafting hints of mint and menthol. Absolutely incredible stuff. Almost ethereal in a way only a top-class Burg can be. Palate was a bit of an anti-climax at first unfortunately. Really clean and clear in true Mugnier style, with some obvious depth in its rich dark cherries and strawberries, and a nice plush, velvety feel. Not much else though, and the finish seemed to dip a little, with a smidgen of heat around the edges and some overtly metallic bits not helping things. In spite of the plushness, I was left with a feeling that it was all still a bit correct, not entirely loosened up, maybe even a bit primary. Thankfully, when we came back to it, the mid-palate really filled-up, showing some tomato and beef-stew notes, the bloody, rusty metal scents faded a bit in the background to show some wet stony minerality instead, and the finish had lengthened and stretched out with some brambly bitterness and Chinese medicine notes. It opened up quite beautifully I thought, but then the Chinese medicine note got stronger and stronger, and the wine just stopped improving after awhile. On guessing, I was not sure it was a Moose, The palate was just not quite where the nose was, and although it had that seamless iron fist in velvet glove thing I associate with all Musignies, it just did not have the intensity and layered complexity that I normally get with the vineyard. Overall, a lovely wine, but not quite the show-stopper that some of Freddy Mugnier's other vintages have been. Pretty nice pairing with the roast goose though. (4094 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/29/2010 & rated 90 points: Mugnier Musigny and Amoureuses 1985-2001 (Boka - Chicago IL): Single blind flight of Mugnier Musigny 1985-1997. Also very easy to identify in this flight given it is the youngest by 7 years...and it is 1997. Big black fruit dominates the nose along with some spice with real black pepper notes. Same spice mix on the palate with red and black cherry flavors. Comes across as a little flabby for a Mugnier, but isn't that so 1997? Good finish with fruit, that same surprising pepper-led spice mix and a few hints of sous bois. (3381 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 2/28/2010 & rated 92 points: My first taste of Musigny. This was very, very good but not wow. Awesome nose. Full on the palate with nice fruit and earth. Nicely balanced. (2766 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 2/28/2010: spectacular nose, this was an awesome pair with pomegranate and blood orange glazed quail, an elegant wine (2822 views)
Tasted by winefool on 10/20/2008 & rated 95 points: LdC Musigny Dinner (Custom House): Full red color. Mmmn, huge sweet red cherry brown sugar nose - really lovely. Wonderful sweet red cherry fruit on the palate - round, balanced, floral and just giving up everything. Nice long but round soft finish. A picture of femininity. I love this style of Burgundy and this is exactly what I look for in Musigny, but a couple other very experienced tasters liked some of the more structured examples better. (3610 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/20/2008 & rated 92 points: Musigny Dinner from Top Producers (Custom House - Chicago IL): Nice floral aromatics, with more black cherry than red on nose with some Asian spice and black pepper. Same profile came through on the palate, with moderate intensity or power. This was probably the most advanced of the four producers' 1997 Musigny opened tonight and showed the least remaining structure. (2854 views)
Tasted by Totatalitarian on 6/8/2008: The Mugnier had a nice if reticent nose and was elegant, if light, on the palate. I agree with Sam that it was a bit vegetal, but I thought it was a pleasant if tired bottle. (2977 views)
Tasted by winenutnyc on 12/16/2007: Nose of ripe black-ish fruits with a hint of pepper. The palate has that silky Musigny warmth, but lacks the depth of better vintages. Very nice. Much more tannic than expected. Might have some good upside. (3310 views)
Tasted by cellarid on 12/15/2007: very good, not great. (3264 views)
Tasted by TomTom on 11/23/2007 flawed bottle: Corked (3164 views)
Tasted by MartyL on 1/28/2007: Peter Pratt's Offline: Notes from Burgundy Table #1 (plus notes on some other wines): On the nose, a lacy (detailed, filligreed, whatever you want to call it) impression ripe wild strawberries and rose petals. Silky and delicate on the palate. The finish is at first a little clipped compared to prior showings but that gets sorted out with air as the wine opens up, the acidity integrates and the aromas and flavors sweeten and amplify. After an hour or so open, it is downright singing. A gorgeous, gorgeous beauty that was one of the best wines I tasted today. (I'm also very very happy to have some of this in my cellar). (4381 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 1/28/2007 & rated 92 points: "Fragrant funk" sums up the bouquet of this wine for me. Distinctly layered, it sinks onto the palate with dark briary notes on a base of silky red fruit. With time the tannins firm up a bit, but it's still a beauty. (3406 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 8/24/2006: (at Cru – NYC) My first Musigny. I was excited about tasting this wine all week – looking forward to it with great anticipation. Usually this results in disappointment. As this was my first, I can claim no expertise on this vineyard, but I was extremely impressed with what was in the glass. The color was light garnet. The nose exploded out of the glass (lovely stems provided by Cru) and gained in complexity throughout the evening. What jumped out at me was the purity of fruit, some spice (cinnamon) and just a touch of herb. I was floored with the strength, yet precision of its elements. Not at all heavy or dumb – just sneaky strong. The palate grew in intensity over the course of a couple of hours. Medium bodied at most, silky, elegant with all elements in their proper place. If I sound gushing, I am. I am a big fan. I know this is not a great year, but I was taken by the quality of this wine and will search out more from this vineyard and producer in the future. Totally my style and for me, top of the class. (19.5) (3308 views)
Tasted by Blair Curtis on 4/17/2006 & rated 91 points: Dinner at The Orchard with NYC Ebobbers (NYC): Apple skins on the nose. Ripe and mellow on the palate. A very "clean" wine (in relation to the Prieur in this flight) and very fine in the mouth at first. But becomes tannic and clamps down as it sits. Very classic fruit profile on the palate, but a bit riper than I prefer. Mark G. notes that the wine tastes acidified - that the acid is out of joint. Not sure if this wine was acidified or not, but I understand his point. I am told that Mugnier does not like ripe vintages and that he was not a fan of his wines in this vintage. (4879 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
