Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by t.d.alexander on 4/25/2023: Pale garnet with developed, medium intensity aromas of grape jelly, black plum, black cherry, blueberry compote, clove, and cedar. It is dry, with high acid, medium minus and very rounded tannins, medium plus alcohol, and medium plus bodied with flavors of stewed plum, black cherry, cinnamon, bitter chocolate, cocoa nib, and menthol which linger for a long finish.

good; drink now not suitable for more aging (116 views)
Tasted by gordoyflaca on 8/28/2020 & rated 86 points: Not really. What is this. (383 views)
Tasted by Bradley Love on 11/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Excellent! Some bricking. Still nice cherry fruit and food-friendly acidity. Bottles continued to improve with age but probably at peak. Sad this was the last one from the case. (1593 views)
Tasted by SexyEpicurean on 10/11/2015 & rated 89 points: Still young right now, I think. I will give at least another 1-2 years before trying another. Right now, this needs at least 1 hour decant, preferably 2, to start opening up. When it does, it is a light style but I get the classic tarry undertones and floral notes. Seems classic but not a powerhouse. It was very good with Italian fare. Could possibly improve in score with age. (1502 views)
Tasted by BarkingLeopard on 9/22/2015: Okay, but not impressed for the money. Would not buy again. (1556 views)
Tasted by JamesSanders on 9/10/2015 & rated 79 points: Smells and tastes like the feminine side of Nebbiolo, but it is dilute and lacks any grip or structure. Gets tiresome to drink very quickly, which for me is really unusual. This is the kind of wine Rimmerman usually hits for me, but this is a big miss. I've had two bottles now, several months apart and didn't like either. (2035 views)
Tasted by bcameron on 8/15/2015 & rated 80 points: Tannic, could age well another 5-10 years (1439 views)
Tasted by zut alors! on 3/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Like the comments of others of the CTC on this wine, I give it a strong 91 pts. As others said, great QPR. A true example of the nebbiolo grape at an affordable price. Coincidentally, I read Asimov's essay about this wine in today's NY Times and I even picked up the "tar" notes. Read the essay:

Tasted by ddisler on 2/16/2015 & rated 91 points: The color is light red, somewhat like a Pinot Noir but a little more brick color. The nose is just like a fine Barolo - amazing floral rose notes with some vegatal undertones. Initial palate is completely different from an aged Barolo, but in a good youthful and lively way. Very little tannins, but some good acitdity. It starts to bring in some fresh red fruit flavors along with the floral notes. Finishes quickly, but this is a great wine and perfectly represents what you expect from the grape and style. (825 views)
Tasted by mfkantor on 2/12/2015 & rated 90 points: A great QPR. Brick red color; nose of cherry and a hint of spice. Dark cherry, some red fruit, and floral notes. Nicely balanced; long finish; has some more life and could go a few years. (836 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 11/22/2014: This wine continues to be an amazing QPR. I wish the 2010s were as good, but they are not even close. (987 views)
Tasted by rbaum on 8/11/2014 & rated 91 points: Love this for what it is--a young, fresh and very fruity Nebbiolo, not harsh at all. Bought a case and slowly working our way through them. I love Nebbiolo and the wife likes wines that are "smooth" and fruity to her taste. This one hits the spot. (1185 views)
Tasted by Baudelaire on 5/13/2014 & rated 91 points: I feel as if my knowledge of Nebbiolo up to this point has been a fraud. There was a freshness and fruit forward quality to this wine that showed me possibilities I hadn't tasted before. Really something extraordinary. (1029 views)
Tasted by jrglm on 4/12/2014 & rated 91 points: This may be the best wine offered by Garagiste in terms of QPR. Thankfully I still have 3 bottles left to see how this evolves. (1060 views)
Tasted by joncohen on 4/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Brick maroon going to pink at the edge, medium viscosity. Aromas of cedar, dark cherries, crushed violets. On the palate: dark cherries, red fruit, vanilla, with well integrated acids; characteristic grip emerges in mid-palate, but relatively subdued for a Nebbiolo; medium plus weight in the mouth. Long finish, with floral and cherry flavors lingering on and on retronasally. Stood up well against a rich pork belly and roasted beets. Great purity of expression without being at all one-dimensional. An attractive, well-balanced package with good typicity and style. (1076 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 3/25/2014: Love the tar! Excellent value. (1068 views)
Tasted by jtinto on 3/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Outstanding young easy to drink Neb for everyday. 14% ABV (1072 views)
Tasted by krmcgrath on 2/28/2014 & rated 90 points: Nice easy to drink young nebbiolo. Dark red fruit, round full tannins and a lingering finish where fresh acidity joins in. Very good with our meal. (722 views)
Tasted by jrglm on 1/25/2014 & rated 88 points: For a Piemonte table wine, this really has some potential. We probably should have had this with our meal, not after. I think most Italian wines are made for food and you do them a disservice by not having them with supper. This particular wine has some pretty powerful tannins but some really nice fruit and earth poking through. It's a keeper. (992 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 12/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Wonderful value with lots of fresh, alive flavors, especially the red fruits and floral elements. Tons of flavor, easy drinking. (1136 views)

2011 Cascina Chicco Langhe Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo Barrel Sample
Dear Friends,
Summer.
It’s almost upon us.
In a calendar sense, June 21st is still weeks away - as a mindset - the season of a more relaxed way of seeing begins this weekend.
Summer always brings hope and the expectation of the new wine vintage – from flower to bottle, the path of a grape to your nose and palate is a circuitous one but it all begins in spring and early summer (unless you are in Europe this year - 2013 has started off as one of the poorest in recent memory – worse than 2012. Sorry, not to spoil the plot quite yet – I’ll rephrase that to emphasize optimism for a summer-influenced recovery: “2013 has started off in an inconvenient way but I am most hopeful for a splendid turn-around” - with such a rocky start to the growing season, I’m sure the Bordelaise have already proclaimed the year not only worthy of en-premier but on par with 2000 and 2005).
With 2013 up in the air (so far), certainty does come from somewhere - precisely in the form of this “barrel sample” in my hands – a peek at the 2011 vintage in Piedmont and Nebbiolo in specific.
If you are about to head out of town and wish for a brief missive this afternoon – how’s this for a six letter synopsis regarding today’s wine:
INSANE! (ok, I added an exclamation point as well)
As a Memorial Day send-off, my goal was to place a lit vinous Roman Candle in your hands and this wine is just that – alive and kicking with a youthful exuberance that we rarely have the opportunity to sample on our side of the Atlantic (many 2010 Nebbiolos are just now hitting the US market).
From a “riserva” vineyard that shall go nameless, this is the first vintage of this incarnation Cascina Chicco has produced (the winery has bottled Langhe Nebbiolo for years but not from this high-level of a source, thus we’ve never offered it). The new 2011 Nebbiolo is teeming with life and a bright, rather dense rainbow spectrum of flavors – it is an obvious and outright bargain that combines a translucent Nebbiolo tradition of rose-water and tar with an immediately appealing, “Flesh for Fantasy” style that Billy Idol would have admired. A wine that should prove to be quite versatile, it is moderate in alcohol for the grape (13.5%- 14.0%) with a deeply pitched song that easily sits in the first chair position but can also play second/third fiddle (if need be). It leaves the taster with a lingering flavor of freshness and fruit for up to a full minute or more – flavors that are not necessarily complex at this early stage but they are quite difficult to ignore.
For $16+, this is another case-worthy buy that will be a house favorite for a wide number of you – not just those that typically steer toward Piedmont.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
