Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cannym on 9/12/2022 & rated 91 points: Mid gold. Lovely aromatic nose. Ground almonds, flowers. Into a tertiary phase. Somewhat oxidative. Hazelnut, almonds, unripe banana, stone fruits. Smoke. Fair acidity. Long. Lovely. (572 views)
Tasted by Amberissey on 10/2/2021 & rated 89 points: Orange zest, fresh, intense summer flowers, sandalwood and steely minerality on the nose. Maybe some warm shortcrust pastry. Wonderful butter fudge note on the attack. Then the sandalwood and the flowers again. On the second glass there is a massive juiciness that’s arrived. Almost like orange without the sweetness or acidity. Although a good experience, I think it may have been better a couple of years ago. (882 views)
Tasted by paintinginacave on 10/1/2021 & rated 88 points: Pours a star bright, deep gold. Slightly oxidative with petroleum on the nose upon opening that quickly faded following a two hour slow oxidation. Orange rind, citrus blossom, polished steel, sandalwood, buttered pastry, and honeydew melon form the nose. The palate mirrors the nose in every possible sence when it comes to flavour profile yet lacks the same level of expression and intensity. This is by no means a disappointment since there’s still good mid palate density, a pleasing waxy texture, and respectable length on the finish. (825 views)
Tasted by Brain Capers on 5/6/2021: Wow, from a visit to the winery, got to met Paul Vincent, he said the 2003 red all sold, but suggested several buyers in US. Did have the blanc, so bought three bottles. Cork slipped out almost too easily, but the wine, now old, without freshness, was still very good. Nice flavors remaining of the white varieties. Definitely time to drink up. Yum. (936 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 3/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Wine night @ CHL: Notes to come (1235 views)
Tasted by cannym on 2/20/2020 & rated 90 points: Mid gold. Lovely aromatic nose. Hazelnut, flowers. Into a tertiary phase. Somewhat oxidative. Hazelnut, unripe banana, stone fruits. Smoke. Fair acidity. Long. Lovely. Just paled a little against the 2011 tonight, preferred the fresher version. (812 views)
Tasted by mistermags on 1/2/2020 & rated 92 points: PnP. No notes. Initially appeared past sell by. After an hour or so in glass, showed marked improvement. Really enjoyable mature expression of CNDP, but perhaps best to drink up any remaining bottles over the next couple of years. (616 views)
Tasted by MAOC on 8/10/2018: At Harwood Arms. In that beautiful almost riesling-esque stage which CdP blanc reaches - apple and peach tones, a moderately honeyed edge against a firmly mineral background, but with the texture of a Rhone white. Really lovely stuff ****+ (1016 views)
Tasted by mistermags on 2/27/2017 & rated 92 points: Single glass by Coravin. Similar to Cannym's previous notes. Drunk at 'cellar' temperature, not chilled. Not sure if it has peaked but still very enjoyable. (2169 views)
Tasted by cannym on 11/17/2016 & rated 92 points: Mid gold. Lovely aromatic nose. Hazelnut, flowers. Getting into a tertiary phase. Somewhat oxidative. Hazlenut, unripe banana, stone fruits. Smoke. Fair acidity. Long. Lovely. (1705 views)
Tasted by cannym on 3/26/2016 & rated 92 points: Mid gold. actually very fresh. Lots of white fruits, light honey, almonds. Mouth filling and rich without being overweight. Decent acidity, decent length. This is very far from being fully mature. Lovely. (2054 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/5/2015: A mid-winter visit to Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 2/5/2015-2/7/2015 (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France): Vincent pointed out that in a difficult vintage like 2003 that the Bourbolenc was especially important. Varnish and nuts on the nose. Amazingly fresh. Spicy. With a note of dried pineapple. Wacky! (5518 views)
Tasted by dpolivy on 2/5/2015 & rated 90 points: Tasting in Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 2/5/2015-2/7/2015 (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France): Nutty, slightly oxidized nose. Almonds. Some mature, aged fruit, with pineapple and minerals. A bit fuller bodied. (3113 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 4/12/2013: San Diego WineSpectator.com Offline, 4/12/2013 (San Diego): Clear light straw color. Muted nose of light jasmine. Restrained on the palate as well, with light bitter herbs. I guessed white Rhone. Seems to be in that closed phase that many of them go through from ages 4-12 or so. Ranked at the bottom tonight, with no votes for first, second or third place. (3500 views)
Tasted by cannym on 2/9/2012 & rated 92 points: Much as last bottle, no significant shift. Was popped and poured but would have been better with a decant. (3232 views)
Tasted by MichelPlatini on 8/5/2011 & rated 91 points: A wine with great balance. Honey and apricot on the nose, lush mouthfeel, but not too lush or powerful. In other words, this is wine and not syrup. Does need a little aeration to show its stuff, wonderful with a nice dish of pasta mixed with tomatoes and eggplant. Drank 30 milesfrom Chateauneuf du Pape, so htat probably helped too :) (3202 views)
Tasted by cannym on 6/19/2011 & rated 92 points: Mid gold. Lovely honeyed and hint of honeysuckle nose plus bitter almonds. Similar flavours on palate. Also that slightly oily richness. Plenty acidity to keep it lively. Very good food wine - managed hot smoked salmon perfectly and didn't fall over with baked gammon either. Very temperature dependent - much better at 10-12C. Why don't we drink more of these complex and versatile wines? (2683 views)
Tasted by cannym on 10/30/2010 & rated 93 points: Lovely, honey, white fruit, touch of almond. Great body, good acidity, very long. Lovely wine and a great achievement in a hot year. Still fruity, loads of development and changes to come. (2787 views)
Tasted by cannym on 10/3/2010 & rated 92 points: Mid gold. Notes of honey and beeswax on the nose. Lovely nuttiness, probably hazelnuts and slightly oily in a good way. Also fine citrus elements. Great depth of flavour. Fine acidity too - how as this possible in such a hot year. Still fairly fruity, not yet fully into its more oxidised older age style at all. An example of exemplary cool storage I suspect. A really lovely complicated wine, great with food. Even better, its the first from a case! (2292 views)
Tasted by cabber on 9/30/2010 flawed bottle: Oxidized and undrinkable. probably too late for this puppy anyway. (2038 views)
50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Smaak / Afdronk: 17 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 94/100 (2213 views)
Tasted by Filippo on 4/12/2009 & rated 94 points: Fantastic!! Starts with wondeful honey flavours, followed by ripe white fruits, candied ginger, just a bit of vanilla, and a sort of "white garrigue". Supports all this with a fresh structure. Every sip is a new story!!! (2201 views)
Tasted by Cremers on 1/24/2009 & rated 91 points: Full White - A great white wine with a full body. Full tastes of flowers, vanille, honey, yet also a little mineral. Some freshness added due to the acidity, also small alcohol taste. (2491 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 12/15/2008 & rated 87 points: 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc (Frankrijk, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Kleur: Middel goudgeel Aroma / bouquet: Niet heel expressief, halfgesloten. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Smaak / Afdronk: 14 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 87/100 (2221 views)
Tasted by Jeff W on 5/18/2006: This is a very well made and enjoyable wine. The first impression is of bright fruit - it's very fruity for a white Chateauneuf - and good acidity. It's no lightweight, though. It has weight and body, and I think that's the alcohol as much as anything. The finish is nicely spiced. vg+ (3147 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
