Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 98 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by salil on 4/20/2024 & rated 89 points: Grand Sichuan, Jersey City edition (Grand Sichuan, Grove St.): Leftovers from the bottle that Seth posted his 4/19 note on. It's still holding up quite nicely, though doesn't show quite the same array of aromatic depth Seth described. The red fruited flavours here are quite gentle and play a supporting role to more savoury dried floral, herbal, and faintly leathery elements. Feels fully mature and perhaps slightly on the downslope, with the structure fully integrated here, and a graceful, silky texture on a mediumweight frame. (388 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 4/19/2024 & rated 93 points: Decanted and poured into a Riedel Bdx glass. This is fully mature and in a good place. The color is deep and dark. Nose is mostly tertiary and secondary but there is some beautiful sweet dark fruit under the surface. Hints of tobacco & green leaves along with soy and carob and a wonderful nuttiness. Old study. The fruit is black cherry along w hints of cassis. Very refined. Maybe missing just a bit in amplitude. The palate is excellent - similar to nose but sweeter and a bit fuller. Still gentle and mature - more silky and classy than assertive. The alloy of the sweet dark 82 fruit with the tobacco and carob umami is lovely. Lots of velvety sweet fruit comes out in the middle: blackberry, black cherry and just a bit of cassis. There is a bitter lean point and the end middle. The finish starts out a little mute and lean but a really nice Unami nuttiness comes out w hints of the sweet fruit. A recent purchase from Acker’s internet auction for like $75 and I’m very happy with this. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 4.5-5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16-17.5/20. (246 views)
Tasted by Boone's Farm on 3/30/2024 & rated 91 points: Wet earth and forest floor. A little leather. Beginning to fade a little (291 views)
Tasted by asgerG on 6/24/2023 & rated 95 points: DnP. Medium red brick coloured, orange tinged, 5. Really intriguing mature bouquet, black currant, herbaceous, cedar, complex. Harmonious palate, m-T, m+A, mB, dry, perfectly balance, dark fruits, long elegant finish. Drink now but will stay here for many years to come. (1604 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 4/20/2023 & rated 94 points: Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle (full bottles split for a zoom tasting). Nose of carob and nutty - tertiary & fully mature. Coffee or mocha - bitter coffee grounds is a good way. Celery. Palate is coffee and some bitter at start But sweetens and nutty comes out. Finish is a bit boney nutty quite dry and some tobacco. I was able to get the nose as mature BDX. probably from the 80’s but could have been 70’s. Lots of guesses then but others narrowed it to Margaux. Clearly not Palmer or Ch Margaux so someone guessed RS which didn’t seem right to me so I figured it might be Prieur Lichine and was correct. I guessed 83 but in retrospect the nose really shows the quality and luscious nature of the vintage. Really excellent showing and everyone agreed. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

Day 2: better last night but didn’t finish the scoring. Still excellent on the nose and palate. (1842 views)
Tasted by chatters on 12/31/2022: Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Quite bold after the 1980 and 1981, black over red fruit showing brambles, a little smoky and earthy underpin, toast, sweet spice, forest floor, lovely nose. Juicy medium plus intensity acidity is balanced by brambles, red berries and blackcurrants, toast, sous bois, tight talc textured tannins, long, lovely, wonderful in fact. (2048 views)
Tasted by asgerG on 3/5/2022 & rated 92 points: DnP. Much like last time albeit a bit less intense. (2989 views)
Tasted by NewFrenchClaret on 11/22/2021 & rated 86 points: Bottle in perfect condition and from a cache of wines which have been generally excellent, so was expecting this to be pretty good. Nice old Bordeaux nose, but a bit tertiary for the year. Lots of coffee and mint, bit of tobacco.

Pretty thin mouthfeel, bitter finish. Weedy tannins. Overall can't say this is a great success for the vintage. The 1975 was considerably better. Avoid. (3313 views)
Tasted by GrapeScott on 11/1/2021 & rated 88 points: Drank along side the '83 in a mini-vertical. As everyone knows, '82 was the year that brought Bordeaux back on the world stage, but Margaux has been said to be one of the weaker regions in this otherwise excellent vintage. On the other hand, '83 often lives in its older brother's shadow, but was a sensational year in Margaux. So which prevails, vintage or commune? Compared to the '83, this '82 has a much more effusive, almost liqueur-like nose, brimming with kirsch and floral notes. Lush and a bit exotic, with completely resolved tannins, this has likely passed its apex, but is still drinking well. A bit one-dimensional compared to the '83, which was my favorite of the two. (2666 views)
Tasted by asgerG on 6/17/2021 & rated 94 points: DnP. Beautiful brick colour, 5. Wonderful complex bouquet, loads of mature fruit. Very well balanced on the palate, fully resolved tannins, good freshness though and elegant long finish. This was in super condition really showing the strength of the vintage. (2066 views)
Tasted by Carib on 11/25/2020 flawed bottle: This was not a well cellared bottle. Nothing there. (3010 views)
Tasted by GrapeScott on 3/27/2020 & rated 88 points: Very high shoulder fill, excellent color, crimson-purple with some bricking at the rim. Feminine and floral Margaux nose of rose petals, red fruit and cigar box, with red currant, tart cherry and sandalwood flavors. Tannins are fully resolved but the acidity leaves a slight pucker on the finish, suggesting the fruit at harvest may have been a bit underripe. I have not had this wine in more than a decade, and although it is almost surely past its peak, it is certainly still very enjoyable now. Not as good as an '82 de Pez I had at Christmas, but still a tribute to the magic of the vintage. This bottle is numbered 145747, meaning they made at least 12,000 cases of this stuff. (2961 views)
Tasted by Slipper on 1/16/2020 & rated 82 points: We were very surprised that the wine was as good as it was. Best after 15 minutes of breathing. (2768 views)
Tasted by colorflavorlocking on 12/31/2019 & rated 93 points: Remarkably youthful. A bit musty on opening, but aromas of black currant and spice emerge in time. Perfumed nose, silky mouthfeel. Rich on palate, with quite exotic spiced black fruit. Great balance, medium length. After an hour and a half tobacco and roast coffee starts to peek through. From a pristine bottle, should last a good while longer. Margaux! (2933 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 9/1/2019 & rated 87 points: From a well-cellared bottle, this 37-year-old, medium garnet/brick wine still has a modest amount of residual red fruit, but the fruit plays second fiddle to the louder notes of tobacco, almond, earth, allspice and leather. Medium-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity, seamlessly alcoholic and with fully resolved tannins, it concludes with a medium-length, softly-textured finish. This is still enjoyable, but is definitely well beyond plateau. Drink now. (3376 views)
Tasted by RKatzDO on 3/30/2019: Corked.... (2979 views)
Tasted by stoneb on 3/9/2019 & rated 91 points: Last bottle from a case purchased on release. Garnet ruby core; thin rim. Short decant for sediment. Barnyard on opening that blew off after 15 minutes. Then floral aroma and fleeting but delicious, almost youthful, fruit. Faded rapidly after an hour, but still had something special to offer, however briefly. While this wine was better 20 years ago, I'm glad I saved one for tonight. (2424 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 12/8/2018 flawed bottle: corked. Argh (3411 views)
Tasted by RGardner on 9/8/2018: Excellent, not over the hill or close. Elegant and balanced. (2721 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 4/14/2018 & rated 91 points: Well stored bottle, this is probably near the end of its window of drinkability, but I don’t have a history to say if it was better 10 years ago. Still fairly deep color with some browning, there are lots of attractive tertiary notes, like tobacco, leather, and wet leaves. The fruit provides enough sweetness and lift and the tannins have melted away. Not the type of wine that blows your mind but good aged Bordeaux (3267 views)
Tasted by wirelesswine on 12/31/2017: Thanks to a Durand corkscrew, was able to get the cork out in very good condition. Bottle condition overall was quite good, and wine was at a base neck fill level. Unfortunately, we were probably past the optimal drinking window on this one. Color was definitely browning, and there was barely any fruit left. Overall, while drinkable, it was pretty dried out and not providing much enjoyment. It did improve a touch with some air, but never got to the place where we wanted to finish the bottle. (3084 views)
Tasted by Robwild on 12/26/2017 & rated 86 points: Prior to retiring this bottle down the sink, I decided to see just what might be left in what critics have described as an at best average wine from a great vintage. (Note: Drinkability Report has this thru 2007 with others listed as even earlier). This has never been a favorite of Parker from an otherwise noteworthy chateau, but I have to believe that in it's prime, it was better than critics gave its due. But alas, it is over the hill and has seen the better era of bye-gone days. Now with brown edges, with a faint red color, still a hint of tannin as it clings to life support. Light, with a bit of earthy and vegetable flavor, it might be possible to pass this off to an undiscerning recipient in a silent auction looking for a last minute tax deduction. Otherwise, if you are still in possession of one of these bottles, it was last call years ago. Drink up. (2883 views)
Tasted by wineguru57@yahoo.com.au on 12/13/2017 & rated 87 points: A little disappointed . Bottle had been stored perfectly, given time to breathe after decant. Just lacked any wow factor. Mellow, lacked the structure of a really good 82. (2861 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 9/2/2017 & rated 91 points: Drinking very nicely and not really showing its age other than with some browning at the rim, not terribly complex, but a rock solid and delicious example of well-aged Bordeaux. (2603 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 9/2/2017: No formal notes, over dinner. This was paired with an excellent bottle of 1970 Chateau Pavie and didn't stand a chance in my view. Decent nose, not particularly Margaux in character, nicely evolved notes of spices, tobacco, dark fruit. Not much tension or depth on the palate, quite drying. (3664 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Margaux

Read more about Margaux and its wines As with a large part of the Bordeaux vineyards, vines first appeared in Margaux during the Gallo-Roman period.
In 1705 a text mentions Château Margaux . But we have to wait for the end of the eighteenth century and the coming of the earliest techniques in aging for the concept of wines of high quality to develop. The confirmation of this was the famous 1855 classification which recognized 21 Crus Classés in the Margaux appellation. One hundred years later, the Viticultural Federation and the Margaux appellation of controlled origin were born. The appellation, which stretches out over five communes, is actually unique in the Médoc in that it is the only one to contain all the range of wines, as rich as they are vast, from First Great Cru Classé to the Fifths, not forgetting its famous Crus Bourgeois and its Crus Artisans.

In Margaux there is a predominance of Garonne gravel on a central plateau of about 4 miles in length and one and a quarter wide. To the east-south-east, it overlooks the low lying land by the estuary. Its east side is marked by gentle, dry valleys and a succession of ridges. The layer of gravel in Margaux was spread out by a former Garonne in the early Quaternary. Rather large in size, it is mingled with shingle of average dimension and represents the finest ensemble of Günz gravel in the Haut-Médoc. It is on this ancient layer on a Tertiary terrace of limestone or clayey marl that the best Médoc crus lie. All the conditions for successful wine are present : a large amount of gravel and pebbles, poor soil which cannot retain water and deep rooted vines.

It is customary to say that Margaux wines are the "most feminine" in the Médoc, thus stressing their delicacy, suppleness and their fruity, elegant aromas. This does not affect their great propensity for aging; just the opposite, for the relatively thin terroir imparts tannins which give them long life. The other characteristic of these wines which combine an elegant vitality, subtlety and consistency, is their diversity and personality. Over and above the flavour which is their "common denominator", they present an exceptional palette of bouquets, fruity flavours which show up differently from one château to another.

Production conditions (Decree dated August 10 1954)
In order to have the right to the Margaux appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labarde, "excluding the land which by the nature of its soil or because of its situation, is unfit to produce wine of this appellation".
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot
Soil: Gravel and silt plateau on a layer of limestone or silt on clay
Surface Area: 1,530 ha
