Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 98 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Lemmy-W on 10/15/2023 & rated 92 points: Needs some air to soften the tannins. Really nice and last glass was best. No hurry to open next one. (1010 views)
Tasted by marco_graz on 9/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Intense cherry red with slightly garnet nail, at the nose it is incredbly balsamic, with redcurrant, thyme (very beautiful here), earth to close it up. On the palate it has really lively tannins, with high but integrated acidity. Alcohol is a bit too strong but doesn't disturb the overall balance. The finish is very long and warm. Overall great wine but the feeling I had was of a wine that will never smooth the tannins before to take the descending road. I would give it 2 more years. (1069 views)
Tasted by winot on 4/16/2023 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly youthful. Deep maroon, with just some slight indications of age. Earthy, aged, quite rich nose. Nice palate, great balance, very good depth, long finish. Earthy; not joyously fruity, needs the right food. Quite glad that I have another bottle that I can keep for several more years, and see where this lands when closer to full maturity. Lots of sediment. (1329 views)
Tasted by jonr on 4/4/2023 & rated 93 points: Still a fantastisk wine. Lacked a little fruit. Burs its now a real cellarwi . It kost now nok 1500 at the monopoly. Sndsre stiil rising.
A Taurasi fore many comming years. (1544 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 2/19/2023 & rated 89 points: 3rd bottle from a small case, and 15 months since my last one. Not much to add to my previous notes. This is well balanced but aromatically fairly muted. Not showing any overripeness or heat, to the contrary there is a subtle green touch that provides freshness together with the slightly elevated acidity. Nice easy drinking wine but nothing special really. (1645 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 2/18/2023 & rated 93 points: After steamboat dinner at Old Holland Rd. Pop and poured. Drank in Grassl 1855.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Sediments at bottom of bottle.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of smoky ash earth, meat and old leather, black fruits. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), resolving high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of roasted black fruits - blackberries, black cherries, leather meat, smooth dark cassis and spice, savoury earth. Some tea leaves on day 2. Long finish.
Very good quality. Time to drink up and enjoy this well aged Aglianico. (1358 views)
Tasted by dmanzoni on 12/4/2022 & rated 91 points: Va areato tanto, anche bevuto su più giorni. È un vino possente, acido, alcoolico (troppo per i miei gusti), ma anche vegetale, fruttato, equilibrato e di nuovo acido. Ti prende a schiaffoni e poi ti intriga. (1222 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 10/14/2022: Knickarp (1339 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 10/24/2021: Pnp. Another nice bottle of the 07. Consistent with my last bottle this is a nicely balanced but aromatically somewhat muted red. Medium body, mainly dark fruit but not overripe at all. Everything is in nice balance but nothing remarkable either and I can’t see this ever going beyond the 90-91 point range. Very nice weekday wine in my eyes. (2738 views)
Tasted by Highlander on 7/30/2021: Wow this has improved over time! Everyone enjoyed this, lots of fruit, tannins fully integrated. Excellent on throughout (2704 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 6/22/2021 & rated 90 points: First bottle from a case bought on release. First time drinking Mastroberardino’s Radici, and the only other Aglianico I remember drinking is Terra di Lavoro. This is very different. Dark garnet with a translucent rim. Fairy muted nose. On the palate this is very round but without being overly rich or ripe. A nice, moderate 13.5% with no heat. Tannins fully integrated upon opening with more air they come a little but overall this seems like a nice, easy drinking wine at its peak in my eyes. Unlike Terra de Lavoro this is much more about drinkability than about impressive aromatics or delineation. While not showing any signs of oxidization, I would drink over the next 4-5 years as I cannot see further upside with longer cellaring here. (2891 views)
Tasted by Mali on 3/20/2021 & rated 93 points: Ein authentischer, traditioneller südlicher Wein mit allem, was dazugehört.
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 3/15/2021 & rated 91 points: Finally, my last bottle (3/3) was not flawed - a first.

Key pointers of this wine: dark fruits, smoky and mineral (volcanic / ash). With this remark that the fruit is actually somewhat at the background and that the "terroir" really takes the driver seat here. Not for everyone, but I like it. Can still go a good few years I think. On day 2 still going strong... (2923 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 3/14/2021 flawed bottle: The wine showed some heat-damage with aroma's of coffee, considering the purchase at Superiore.de this is not unexpected unfortunately. (2090 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 3/11/2021 flawed bottle: Another flawed bottle, what a surprise. See my last note. Thanks again, Superiore. (2007 views)
Tasted by engelwein on 11/21/2020 & rated 92 points: In der Nase etwas verhalten dunkle Früchte, Beeren. Geschmack ebenso, reif, aber noch etwas Tannin, daher vielleicht noch bis 5-8 Jahre lagern(?). Insgesamt ein schöner Wein! (2221 views)
Tasted by Aris1a on 9/5/2020 & rated 93 points: Dark fruit, cherries, black figs, hint of camphor, eucalyptus. Medium body, medium finish, wonderfully balanced, and really at a good spot. A really good showing overall. I think that this is at it’s peak now. (2370 views)
Tasted by djarcara on 8/7/2020 & rated 93 points: Big full body. Tannins and acidity galore. Dark fruit predominates. The bracing structure of the wine hides the fruit. Five years away from its drinking widow and then at least another 10. Decant for sediment. Classic Taurasi. (2313 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 7/28/2020 flawed bottle: Flawed bottle. Thanks, Superiore.de. (2511 views)
Tasted by werlbonn on 5/14/2020 & rated 93 points: No formal notes. (2566 views)
Tasted by Chip Merlot on 5/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Last bottle of 3 ... lowering last score (Dec. 2016) by a point for fading fruit. This is now kind of a one-note wine, that note being reminiscent of black licorice -- but it's a great note! Consumed over 2 nights, I absolutely love this wine, like slipping on a silk smoking jacket (even though I don't smoke). Absolutely seamless. My guess is that it will hold on for a few more years in its present state. (2312 views)
Tasted by Highlander on 11/16/2019: Very big. Not to be consumed without food. Tannins were well integrated with a 2 hour double decant. Lots of fine sediment so decanting is a must. Very tasty wine, dark fruits several secondary flavors. I suspect this will be on this plateau for several more years (2978 views)
Tasted by Poisey on 11/3/2019 & rated 94 points: Ripe and round with loads of red berry fruit. Perfume with flowers and sandalwood notes. Lovely finish with integrated smooth tannin. Great acidity. Long juicy finish with earthy undertones. Superb. Drink now-2024. (2759 views)
Tasted by jonr on 10/19/2019 & rated 94 points: Wow. I think its devloped even more. Just opend, hidden smell. In glas it opend up. Lot of vanilla, cedar choclate, mature sherrys, dark forestfruit. Full bodied, long lasting aftertatse. Again WOW! (2780 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/4/2019 & rated 91 points: EEE September 2019; Aglianico (@ MvGr): In the bouquet dark berries, chocolate, vanilla and some development. On the palate chocolate, mocha, juicy acidity, round and powerful, mild tannin. Beautiful wine. (2842 views)

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.

Taurasi DOCG

Description of Taurasi region, by Amanda Schuster
http://www.snooth.com/region/italy/campania/taurasi/#ixzz2ndbTULw3

Taurasi is a wine region based on the Aglianico grape, located in Campania in southern Italy. The vineyards are within the high altitude area of Avellino, in soils composed of many elements, most notably limestone and volcanic ash. The wines from Taurasi have a tannic grip and slightly smoky finish unlike other Aglianicos, and this terroir composition is very much a contributing factor.

Wine-making has existed in the region for centuries, starting with the Greeks and into the Roman period and beyond. The great Norman Longobard castle still stands in Avellino. Aglianico itself is one of the original Greek-cultivated grapes, sometimes referred to as Ellenico. But Taurasi is very much a modern era wine and its success is specific to a single producer and vintage: Masterberardino 1968. This wine stormed the international scene and propelled the region to DOC status in 1970. It earned the superior DOCG classification in 1993. Bottles of the 1968 vintage still exist, and though rare, are said to still be very much alive in flavor.

Taurasi is exclusively a red wine, and must be at least 85% Aglianico, with an allowable 15% Piedirosso, Barbera and/or Sangiovese. Though most Taurasi is 100% Aglianico. They must be aged at least three years, with a minimum one year in barrel. Riservas are required to be aged at least four years with 18 months in barrel before release.

Many Taurasi producers are dedicated to small yields with attention to detail. Taurasi is best characterized by a mix of tart fruit flavors, coffee, earth, sweet smoke and leather, with flavors more extracted and concentrated with age. In fact, these wines can handle quite a long cellaring period if one has the patience to wait. For a red wine with a genuinely unique and flavorful character, a wine that really tastes like something, Taurasi is a truly rewarding experience. ~Amanda Schuster
