Tasted by brasstab on 2/5/2024 & rated 92 points: Solid. Not overly tannic, but plenty acidic. What would you expect from a Barolo? Paired delightfully with pork ragú and the Grammys. (1211 views)
Tasted by Chris on 12/30/2023 & rated 98 points: Much better than first bottle opened a few years ago. Great progression here. Deep with background tannins and gorgeous fruit. (1236 views)
Tasted by diggydan on 11/12/2023 & rated 93 points: A lovely bottle of maturing barolo. (1637 views)
Tasted by Thomas B on 9/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted an hour before dinner. Beautiful nose, black fruit & hints of rose.
Palate had lots of big flavor - dark fruit, plum,a hint of licorice? - but surprisingly these faded quickly. (1872 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 7/17/2023: Popped and poured and enjoyed over two nights. Starting to show some age visually. A little browning around the edges. Showing very well on the first night with some mint and charred wood accents. Bright cherry fruit. On day two, it has loosened up and is showing more earthy notes and has lost the mint. I liked this a little more yesterday, though I am sad the bottle is empty today. I won’t hesitate to open another bottle, though this should cruise along for years. (1957 views)
Tasted by Sennma on 5/14/2023: still very tight with big tannins...wait (2074 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 3/31/2023: This bottle (Superiore.de) showed too much evolution, so no rating, but most likely not a representive bottle to determine the drinking window. (2050 views)
Tasted by Tony Poli on 3/14/2023 & rated 95 points: This is what I expect Barolo to be. (2018 views)
Tasted by Mikecu6 on 2/11/2023: Decanted for an hour. Fantastic nose w/ beautiful color. Licorice, dark cherry, earthy. Med to long finish great legs (1922 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 7/3/2022: Served at my Burgers & Barolo party, but everyone else got to enjoy. (2628 views)
Tasted by Nacnud on 3/14/2022 & rated 87 points: Every bottle is different to begin with, and then there's various points of storage in a bottle's life that result in even more variation, but this was a "Drink Now and Don't Decant" bottle for me (and it came straight from the producer to an importer/distributor and then straight to me and stayed at 60 degrees until consumed).

Classic Nebbiolo/Barolo aromatics - like dried flowers. This producer is not known for consistency but this was a good old school Barolo. It really came to life with some pizza! (2912 views)
Tasted by Sorrowless on 11/24/2021 & rated 92 points: Will last for along time but with a bit of air this turned out to be a beautiful wine. Perfectly balanced. Best on day 2. Great value. (3009 views)
Tasted by Thomas B on 10/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Nose of rose, spice, blackberry compote. Palate feels a little muted 3 hours after opening. Hopefully just needs more time to breath, it is too late for it to still be sleeping. Lots of muted flavors just looking for a little more fruit? (3091 views)
Tasted by weinmatt on 9/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Kris G's note is pretty accurate re: what this needs. We drank this with approx a 2 hour slow ox and then decanted half the bottle & left the rest overnight. Both times the wine was very but on the second night it had really elevated. (3146 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 8/30/2021 & rated 93 points: 3 hour decant and this was not enough. Beautiful nose of sweet cherry and cinnamon. Seemed to really hit its stride at about the 5 hour mark. Rose, tar, cherry, complex minerals, still slightly tannic in a good way. Great mouthfeel and long finish. Probably a few years away from its peak. Really nice wine. 93 --94 (2875 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 6/21/2021 & rated 91 points: A bit on the thin side at first with lots of rose water. I have put half of the bottle in a 375 ml bottle and this was consumed 2 days later. A completely different story : showing more substance and structure. This is a very well balanced Barolo with perfectly ripe fruits, subtile herbs and lovely mineral touch. The acidity is perfectly integrated and gives a little wake-up call during the aftertaste. (2799 views)
Tasted by KJD45$ on 6/19/2021 & rated 92 points: Perfect window now...more harmonious than previous note....
Fruit better and nicely integrated now....very nice Barolo (2364 views)
Tasted by kmerriman on 6/1/2021 & rated 93 points: nose really opened up after 30 minutes of decant. (2386 views)
Tasted by Bowmanifesto on 4/27/2021 & rated 91 points: Beautiful Barolo. (2403 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 4/10/2021 & rated 91 points: Dank earth, smoke, and dark ripened berries on the nose. Youthfully exuberant on the palate...bright red fruit, melon, strawberries, and kirsch. Did not notice the alcohol during dinner, but afterwards, when sampled without food, it is a bit on the hot side (14.5%). Tannins were also a prevalent feature after dinner despite a 3 hour decant. Can drink now with lots of air, but I think will likely peak after another 3-10 years. (2374 views)
Tasted by Announcer on 3/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Dry and earthy, several of us thought it was terrific with pasta with bolognese sauce, others thought it too earthy and not enough fruit - just a matter of taste and preference. To me it screamed Italian in a good way. Happy I have two more bottles. (2312 views)
Tasted by Tig78 on 2/15/2021 & rated 94 points: This is really singing! Double decanted and enjoyed over an afternoon/evening. Typical aromas on the nose and progressively more fragrant and complex, with and equally impressive palate highlighted by a distinct but subtle mineral/iron finish. Glad I have another half case! (2516 views)
Tasted by s******n on 1/6/2021 & rated 90 points: Solide und jetzt gut zu trinken. Aber auch nicht mehr. (2482 views)
Tasted by nrk99 on 12/29/2020 & rated 94 points: Spot on Barolo for my taste. Ripe and ready to rock. (2343 views)
Tasted by PVJC on 12/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Based on other notes, had a couple small glasses on day 1 and drank the rest on day 2. Very good. A bit austere in a good way, still with good depth and very pleasant & nicely balanced. Kept reaching for more. For the price, wish I'd bought at least half a case. (2216 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
