Tasted by Labrador on 4/12/2024 & rated 92 points: This was a lovely bottle of wine - aromatically, on the palate and through a long finish. I think it is at or nearing its peak.
As would be expected, this wine was clearly dark fruit - rich and very enjoyable with just that perfect hint of sweetness. It was smooth and luscious on the palate. The tannins were nicely integrated. It threw a lot of sediment, but that did not impact the wine in any way.
Thankfully, this was not our last bottle.
Way to go Randy Lewis! (88 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 11/1/2022 & rated 95 points: WOW!!!
This wine was stunning in every way and very much improved over the last 4.5 years.
It was very rich, smooth, balanced, great depth, a lovely fragrant nose, beautiful dark fruit, mouth-coating and teeth-staining and a bit "chewy" (all only in the best sense), and a finish that brought everyone back for more.
It clearly was the WOTN even considering the quality of its competition - an excellent 2001 Grand-Puy-Lacoste and a remarkable 2010 Ken Wright Abbott Claim Pinot.
The Lewis was just one more example of the enjoyment that CA Cabernets provide when you are patient. (608 views)

Tasted by James Kim on 7/24/2020 & rated 87 points: 8h after decant. Red cherries, lemon, coffee, and hint of herbs on the nose. Crushed blueberries, dark bitter chocolate and coffee on the palate. Definitely full bodied and big. Took another hour or so (9h after decant) to come into better balance with more acids coming through. Medium+ tannins on midpalate. Not really my style. On day 2, ripe cherries and ripe blueberries, plums, and some bitter chocolate and earth. Alcohol really sticks out on the finish. 87+ on day 1 and 84 on day 2. (1389 views)
Tasted by Shay.Aldriedge on 5/25/2018 & rated 94 points: Everything about this wine was in harmony. Been a long time since I’ve had a Napa wine that I’ve enjoyed at its most peak drinking window. Still quite full bodied...blind, would have guessed MAYBE ‘07-‘08. Blue fruit, cassis, nutmeg and shaved cocoa powder on the nose. Palate was mainly dark chocolate dates, blue and black fruit fruit, baking spice, and a supremely delicious finish. If you have this, no rush to open, but you are missing out on its most prime drinking window. Total treat. (2730 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 4/13/2018 & rated 89 points: Everything you would expect from a mature Lewis -- deep black/ purple color, balanced, harmonious, rich, mouth coating, smooth and with a nice finish. It was less fragrant than I would have hoped, but that could have been me - It's Spring (all of the pollen in the air), and I did not decant. That said, it was still very nice. I look forward to my remaining bottles. (2325 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 7/4/2017 & rated 94 points: So happy I took the plunge on this one off from a cellar liquidation. Well integrated and still with fruit forward. Drank over 2 days without noticeable decline after decanting. (2834 views)
Tasted by csklsc on 12/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Great nose, abundant Ca cab fruit with softened tannins, medium silky finish, typically great Lewis mouth feel. Good drinking window. (3732 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 8/16/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark garnet colored, full bodied, intense complex concentrated currant, berry and ripe plum fruits accented by a layer of cognac essence of oak, vanilla, and caramel with hints of spicy mocha, turning to firm supple spicy tangy lingering tannins.

Tasted by mactheknife on 3/9/2014 & rated 93 points: Classic Lewis that has had a chance to tone down. Less fruit forward but delicious. Powerful but balanced. The tannins have integrated nicely and the oak has softened. Got years ahead of it. (4021 views)
Tasted by spectrumphoto on 11/1/2013 & rated 91 points: May be a touch beyond its prime.Still huge on the Chocolate and full bodied but its fruitiness is in decline (4316 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 3/11/2013 & rated 88 points: Very dark in the glass. Reticent nose. Almost sweet tasting. Not identifiable as Cabernet, but nice body, supple mouthfeel. (4549 views)
Tasted by cellar designer on 1/22/2013 & rated 92 points: Dinner with a few friends and a few very good wines, This was the youngest wine and only Cab on the table. As great as it was it came off predictable. The young group at the table would have enjoyed this all evening. I'm thankful we have more in the cellar so we taste the evolution. (3581 views)
Tasted by TJK on 12/31/2012 & rated 96 points: Wow! This was such a beautiful wine. It was full, smooth, had remaining delicios fruit, and chocolate notes. We were all delighted with this wine. (2561 views)

Tasted by shiel on 5/19/2012 & rated 95 points: Magnificiant Cab; well developed and balanced; great structure; strong fruit; drink now or wait. very complex (2251 views)
Tasted by Adonisd1956 on 8/29/2011 & rated 94 points: Beautiful deep ruby in color. No variation on the rims, this has more years to age. Black cherry, currant, leather, tobacco, a touch of menthol, on the nose. Prominent, but smooth tannins, awesome black fruits, a bit of tobacco leaf and leather on the palate. Lingering, lovely finish!!! (2890 views)

Tasted by Beck on 11/1/2009: wonderful. really mellowing the tannins are smooth through out. long finish. (4335 views)
Tasted by last chance on 5/30/2009 & rated 95 points: Tom's Big B-Day Dinner (Pearl (Bellevue, WA)): The nose showed blackberry, cherry, spice and a note of earth. The palate had very rich dark cherry flavors that developed nicely after about 2 hours. This had a really nice mouthfeel, and has a long life ahead of it. This went really well with the braised short ribs, and this bottle outperformed my expectations. WOTN for a couple of us in the group. (5048 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
