Tasted by evilgwyn on 4/1/2024 & rated 90 points: A bit on the fence with this one. I wanted to like it more given I loved it on release but on this showing it was firmly in the “nice red wine” camp for me. Clearly well made and no obvious faults. White pepper, cherries and all the hallmarks of Clonakilla SV but no real zing. Just felt a bit muted and uninspiring, despite the obvious quality. Drunk over the course of an afternoon on the back of a lazy lunch (gotta love Easter Monday) so it had plenty of opportunity to evolve in the glass. Might need to re-evaluate my drinking window on these ones- I absolutely love them close to release but my experience with extended cellaring time has been hit-and-miss. (721 views)
Tasted by tom_brennan on 2/10/2024: Popped and poured. Delicious - classic cool climate shiraz. Dark berry, leather, hint of smoke, lovely nose, good length. Very smooth with slight acidity. Finished it off the next night after putting in the fridge in a smaller bottle. No worse, no better. Question is, is it worth ~3 O'Riadas? A moot point as I now have none of either! (1316 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 10/14/2023 & rated 94 points: This was awesome. The viognier gives it a lightness and freshness that brightens up the otherwise traditional Shiraz profile. Paired beautifully with a rich pork dish. (1534 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 10/5/2023 & rated 94 points: Tim Bday lunch at GW-IT. My bottle. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Everyone was guessing Rhone.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of blood raw meat, red floral flowers, red licorice, concentrated red berries, red plums, red cherries, sweet spices. Developed.
On the palate, dry, good high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), very fine integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red plums, red cherries, intensely sweet red licorice, sweet spices, earth, bits of leathery meat, inner florality, bits of stems. Long finish.
Very very good quality. Another killer good wine from Clonakilla. Drinking in a good place likely at peak already. (1643 views)
Tasted by fizz on 9/3/2023: Screw cap. 14% alc.
5% Viognier.
Black berries, violet, perfumed. Medium bodied. The interplay of acid and alcohol keeping things narrow and fine in the mouth. Food friendly style. (1458 views)
Tasted by Boudica on 7/20/2023 & rated 90 points: I'm not sure what happened with this bottle compared to the last. It was completely tertiary, meaty, savoury with some peppery notes and dark chocolate, and elegantly structured, but it was not perfumed or as complex as the last bottle. It is only a year since the last bottle was consumed, but this was tired in comparison. I'm hoping this was an anomaly in my stash, as this had little charm. (1618 views)
Tasted by Smyles01 on 6/3/2023: Decanted for an hour. Drinking exceptionally at present. Smooth, excellent length. (1603 views)
Tasted by Avid Wino on 5/25/2023 & rated 96 points: F*ck me. Wonderful wine. Silky smooth, length for days. Drinking not thinking before eating in an aromatic Indian restaurant, so no detailed notes. GGCCC. (1355 views)
Tasted by chatters on 5/18/2023: On tour with Tim and Phil day one (Canberra Districts and Beechworth): Popped and poured. Slight rubbery reductiveness initially. With a good vigorous shake it shows blackberries, sweet spice, touch of savoury meatiness and black pepper. Medium plus intensity acidity, chalky/woody tannins prove slightly drying, aa little red fruit joins the blackberry, finishes quite savoury and a little hard - air will help - slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth. (1533 views)
Tasted by Avid Wino on 5/12/2023: Another cellar door visit 9 years later, and another taste of this. Those tannins! Still fantastic! So good in the mouth, this wine. Nose threw me a bit, older than expected, but I’ve no idea how long the tasting bottle had been open. Grabbed a couple of bottles. (1281 views)
Tasted by Dwongl on 4/14/2023 & rated 93 points: Some bricky tones to the red now that the wine is a decade old. Crerries on the nose with a lingering iodine smell. Less funk than a new Clonakilla so age has certainly tamed it. Balanced and integrated tannins, nice acidity with slightly stewed plums and secondary flavours of dried woodland coming though. Finish a bit disappointing. (1550 views)
Tasted by Vaughanwallace on 2/18/2023 & rated 96 points: Perfect. (1538 views)
Tasted by Isaac L on 12/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Took a bottle along on a holiday to check on its progress as it approaches 10 years. Had with Balinese smoked/spiced duck. This particular bottle showed very mellow, with tannins almost entirely resolved, and a slightly darker character than I recall with the '13. Still drank well albeit not as outstanding as previous bottles. (1433 views)
Tasted by Boudica on 7/7/2022 & rated 93 points: Beautiful, elegant wine. Ruby red with vermilion rim demonstrating its age; transparent. Perfumed. Red cherry, raspberry coulis, vanilla panna cotta, apricot skin, black pepper, very lifted, enticing. As it opens up, there is a slight mintiness, tomato-leaf and then leathery, charcuterie notes come to the fore. Slightly under-ripe fruits like wild strawberry, redcurrant and red cherry on the palate building to darker bramble fruits as it opens, with apricot skin, black pepper, vanilla, pastry crust, subtle coffee notes and savoury, leathery notes. Bright acidity, silky tannins, great length, perfectly balanced. I would love a little more flavour intensity on the palate, but the ever-evolving perfume is so entrancing and the structure so elegant that I don't mind. Would I buy another bottle? Yes, and thankfully, I have a nice stash to enjoy for a few more years to come! (2079 views)
Tasted by fizz on 3/5/2022: Perfumed, lifted spice aromas, black fruits. Seamless and elegant mid-weighted palate. Fine tannins to close. Pure expression. (2304 views)

Tasted by cerobo on 10/10/2021 & rated 93 points: Lovely and developed, soft, spices, harmonious and easy to drink (2631 views)
Tasted by fizz on 4/3/2021: Classy and elegant. Lifted florals and black pepper, with black fruits and an earthy, leather note. Seamless texture. So well balanced. Drained pretty quickly. Drink or hold. (3199 views)
Tasted by A_Steady on 2/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Yum, velvety, white pepper, powdery tannin, red fruit, balanced, long finish, did I say yum.... no rush, decades left in it. Chose this for “open that bottle night” (2744 views)
Tasted by BAJRiley on 12/8/2020 & rated 93 points: See previous notes (2403 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 9/22/2020 & rated 93 points: Medium purple colored. Lots or red berries, blackcurrant and some peppery and pencil style notes on the palate. Medium+ to full bodied with a nice medium acidity. Smooth tannins - quite elegant. Good depth. Medium long finish. In a good drinking spot right now. Definitely better than 4 years ago when I had my last bottle. (2912 views)
Tasted by BAJRiley on 8/28/2020: See previous note. Excellent. Couldn't wait to have another bottle. (2715 views)
Tasted by Darke Peak on 7/15/2020 & rated 96 points: Clear medium colour. Complex aroma that evolves over time - its a real journey. Black currant, dark plum leads to savoury, meaty. Fine tannins, dry finish, slight bitterness. A pleasure after so much frustration with bret in the early 2000’s vintages (‘03, etc) that made expensive drain cleaner. Drinking well now but need to spread my remaining 11 bottles over the next 15 years. Will drink my small store of ‘05-‘08 in the shorter term. (2521 views)
Tasted by Jason Wu on 6/27/2020 & rated 97 points: Appearance: clear, pale garnet.
Nose: clean, medium plus intensity; aromas of ginger, blueberry, savoury, herbs, chamomile, honeysuckle, toast, perfumed wood notes/musk, dried mushroom umami notes, white pepper, meaty. It's developing.
Palate: dry, high acidity, medium plus tannins but very fine and smooth with savoury characters, high alcohol (14% but feel like medium), medium plus body, pronounced flavour intensity, medicinal and ginger spice come through. The finish is long.
Overall, it's an outstanding wine. Can drink now, has potential for further ageing.
Drink it through 3 hrs. If you're into the elegant cool climate style Shiraz, this is your wine. So complex on the nose and keep evolving since the first pour into the glass. All primary, secondary and tertiary notes are intertwined with each other and jump from the glass one by one. There's great flavour concentration on the palate, you taste exactly what you get on the nose. You may not like the pungent spices and herbs, but you can not deny that the flavour characters are so well defined. The tannin structure balance the fruit and acidity, and also provides some chewiness on the palate to make the wine more interesting. The finish is lingering and evolving too. After tasting a few dozens Shiraz from cellar door in Hunter Valley, I choose to open this bottle to compare with those cellar door only single vineyard wines which is in my view overpriced at AUD100+. Is it just Hunter Valley that turns crazy and assume people to pay for the marketing bubbles and 'scarcity'? Clearly, they fail to justify their price point and should feel ashamed in front of this wine. I will definitely buy a few more Clonakilla and cellar for the future, before the entire world becomes crazy...
P.S. on day 2, there’s some lovely leather characters developed. Charming! (2433 views)
 Tasted by Raizes on 5/21/2020 & rated 92 points: (2360 views)

complexity, dimension, natural balance and completeness.

Doctor John Kirk planted a vineyard at Murrumbateman near Canberra in 1971. Kirk also planted a small plot of viognier in the mid 1980s, and the Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier came about in 1992 when Kirk’s fourth son, Tim Kirk, co-fermented the viognier fruit with shiraz. He also included a tiny amount of pinot noir and mataro in the early trial blend.

The fruit is now sourced from the best shiraz and viogner parcels of the Murrumbateman Vineyard. Located on a gentle fold of the cool southern tablelands at 600 metres above sea level, the soils are granitic, with sandy brown
and red loams over friable clay.

THE WINEMAKING

Traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques are applied to showcase the fruit flavours. Post vinification the wine is matured in new (33%) and seasoned French oak for around one year.

THE WINE

This medium to full-bodied style is highly aromatic and typified by fresh ginger, white pepper, apricot and black cherry aromas, underlying savoury French oak and fine, slinky, dry tannins. The style develops more complexity and depth with age.
