Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 99 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wineforth on 10/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Last of several bottles. This needed time and is now drinking beautifully. Blackcurrant and coffee on the nose with cedar, tobacco and leather joining on the palate. Fine and complex. Good weight of fruit and a decent finish that goes on longer than you first think. At its peak now as there is a touch of acidity starting to show through. (647 views)
Tasted by PhillyVine2112 on 8/28/2022 & rated 93 points: No rush (1288 views)
Tasted by rebarton3 on 8/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Got this from the vineyard several years ago while it was a little soft and not a long as I’d hoped for, the nose was excellent, tannins and acidity still present, and 4 hours in it’s still very tasty. The best part about this wine is that it’s not showing it’s age in the least. Still looks, smells and tastes like a youthful wine. (1208 views)
Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 5/28/2022: Noticed there was some mold outside of the capsule so figured it was aboutvtime to drink, and the wine showed beautifully. Everything you want from aged napa cab, showing mature yet fresh dark fruit, with leather, tobacco, complex spice and cassis accents. Drinking brilliantly now, outshining a 2007 Quilceda Creek alongside. (1755 views)
Tasted by TheGoat on 6/13/2021: This wine had a berry aroma, noticeable but subtle. Flavor was berry as well, with a medium body, but silky smooth. Finish was long and flavorful.
The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. The body is light/medium. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity. (2618 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 3/18/2021 & rated 90 points: Has gone into its shell since my other bottle two years ago and needs coaxing out. Surprisingly little sediment. Blackcurrant pastil nose, medium weight, good length of finish. A little simple. Still has several years ahead of it so no great rush to drink.p.s. on day 3 the wine seemed to have put on weight and lost its sharp edge so this may still be improving. (2757 views)
Tasted by sweez1 on 10/8/2020 & rated 90 points: Medium body Cab, got better as it opened up. Dark coloring, fruit flavored, very drinkable. (2473 views)
Tasted by timbobwhite on 10/3/2020 & rated 91 points: Two hour double decant. Fragrant on opening, toned down with first glass but still good fruit and good flavors. Drank well, a bit muted, but good sense of place (Rutherford). This bottle was better than last 1-1/2 years ago, but not as good as I had hoped. Tannins crept back in at the end (not that there's anything wrong with that) and a bit of a musty note as well. Hoped for better from this. (2544 views)
Tasted by Lindsaykomlos on 9/5/2020: Oak flavor gets better as it breathes. Not too heavy (2478 views)
Tasted by Swmrush on 2/17/2020 & rated 90 points: Wonderful berry, smooth balance (2803 views)
Tasted by danscellar on 10/29/2019 & rated 87 points: This is a “Drinker” at best, pretty tanic and woody! Not much fruit popped out on this nor did it settle down much with air. (2866 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 10/4/2019 & rated 92 points: Same score as the 2011 Napa yet a very different style. This is more serious in the Bordeaux style and lacks some of the grace of the '11. Whereas the 11 is completely ready now the 12 will benefit from some further age and has the potential to improve in score. Big blackcurrant and cedar nose with coffee and some greenery on the palate. Tannins would benefit from further age. Excellent long finish. Give it a couple of years. (2794 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 9/21/2019 & rated 92 points: Clear, deep ruby color. Showing lively aromatics of cassis & black currant, green peppercorns, roasted coffee, pipe tobacco, worn cedar and smoked paprika. Luscious high-toned black fruits on the attack with stately secondary depth consistent with the nose. Elegant on entry with open textures and nicely developed middle palate weight. Terrifically balanced ripeness and acid, supported with round smooth tannins and finishing with juicy mouthwatering length. In a great place right now, beautiful classic style. 92+ (2664 views)
Tasted by timbobwhite on 1/20/2019: Two hour, double decant, no sediment. No notes. Somewhat muted, a little corked? Cherry predominate, a bit of Rutherford Cab character, structure for 4-5 years more. 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc. Hope second bottle shows better at this price point. (3374 views)
Tasted by highprioraty on 12/27/2018 & rated 92 points: Sweet cherry on the nose and red currant at first taste turning to jolly rancher cherry candy at the finish, with lots in between - tobacco, pie spices, and leather. Definitely hitting its peak now. (2956 views)
Tasted by drinkmore on 11/24/2018 & rated 91 points: nice dark color, fruity and delicious. tannins but well integrated at this point. good value for the quality. (2606 views)
Tasted by Nfmds on 9/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Fruit in nose, star anise and other warm spices in midrange, lingering finish with some tannins. Lots of tobacco. Nice with beef ribs. (2779 views)
Tasted by lundmc on 7/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Cherry on the nose and in the glass, very smooth, started round and got rounder- the balance here is so nice. Tanins present but integrated. Medium finish.

July 1 2019 update: have had a few bottles now. Tasting notes consistent on each one, adding reminder to myself that I like it much better after an hour or so of decant. Also benefits from being cellar temp as opposed to room temp. (2797 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 2/14/2018 & rated 90 points: Medium body, with classic Rutherford dust profile. Opened up considerably after 90 minutes in the decanter, showing cherry fruit and plenty of structure though tannins wel ntegrated at this point. (2632 views)
Tasted by tastark on 8/20/2017: Last bottle must have been an outlier. This bottle was much more in line with the first and was fantastic. (3575 views)
Tasted by Grouper on 8/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Superb (3517 views)
(3538 views)
Tasted by Grouper on 6/26/2016 & rated 93 points: The Estate Cab is the best yet from Frog's Leap. Full body, deep color and a lingering taste on the palate (5817 views)
Tasted by tastark on 6/16/2016: Slight bottle variation from the last one. Seemed a little less ripe. Still great, just different. (4912 views)
Tasted by Aldhib on 4/17/2016 & rated 91 points: Herbs, cherries, leather and a finish that is all Rutherford. (4648 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
