Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by forceberry on 11/15/2020 & rated 86 points: 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Quite youthful, pale neon lime-green color. Sweetish, youthful nose with aromas of ripe peach, some leesy tones, a little bit of honeysuckle and other floral tones, light creamy notes of custard or something, a hint of wax and a more evolved nuance of wizened golden apple. The wine is quite rich, structured and more evolved on the palate (compared to the youthful nose) with a full body and very ripe flavors of sweet golden apples, some waxy tones, a little bit of stony minerality, light juicy notes of fresh peach and a hint of stony minerality. Although the acidity feels high, lending good sense of freshness and structure to the wine, the noticeable ripeness makes the wine feel somewhat fat and weighty. The finish is lively, juicy and quite long with dry, acid-driven flavors of ripe peach, leesy yeast, some stony mineral tones, a little bit of mealy golden apple, a tangy hint of salinity and a touch of beeswax.

At first the nose doesn't feel like anything remotely Riesling, making people guess Italy, German Pinot Gris and Spanish whites. However, with some air the nose manages to get its game together and suddenly it becomes instantly recognizable as Riesling, making me immediately guess German Riesling. Nevertheless, the wine doesn't feel particularly typical for a German Riesling - especially for the cooler 2013 vintage - and my guess was Rheinhessen. To me, this wine lacks the typical lean characteristic and incisive, steely minerality of a classic Rheingau Riesling. All in all, a quite good effort, but nothing particularly memorable. Most people in the tasting agreed that the wine was somewhat all over the place, so perhaps the wine will come together a bit better if left to age for another handful of years. (1184 views)
Tasted by mreinhard74@gmail.com on 5/28/2019 & rated 91 points: Very nice. High acid and abv (for a Riesling). Green grapes and apricot. Tons of sharp fruit. Great pairing with spicy food. (1590 views)
Tasted by mreinhard74@gmail.com on 12/10/2018 & rated 90 points: Deep straw color. Late arriving acidicty. Mineral and lemon curd. I like it. Interesting to see if it continues to develop. (1642 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 9/12/2015: Sortimentsprovning Johan Lidby Vinhandel; 9/10/2015-9/12/2015 (at their office.): this is very unforgiving at first. tight nose, feels like slightly lower acidity and considerably less ripe fruit than the simpler entry level 2014 rieslings from the same producer, but there's some mineral driven complexity with squashed oysters and lemon curd. will it come out of its shell in a few years? I have no idea and my advice is to wait for the high end leitz 2014s to hit the market. (3032 views)
Tasted by Markus IWC on 9/7/2015 & rated 91 points: Stort vin med komplexa smaker, härliga citrus toner, gröna äpplen, typisk Riesling av hög kvalitet. Omprovning 160312, bra vin men sänker betyget till 4 stjärnor från 4,5. (651 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 5/31/2015: 2013 Leitz (SF Wine Trading Company): Also medium yellow. Less aromatic than the first wine. Similar lime green fruit, more spice. Dry but somehow fruitier than the Ein Zwei Dry. Great acidity. Excellent but hard to fathom the threefold jump in price. (2492 views)
Tasted by larseman on 5/20/2015 & rated 86 points: Winemaker dinner med Weingut Leitz (Villa Källhagen): Lite artificiell doft av karamell, frityrolja (?) och mariekex. Bättre i munnen men lite vass i syran. (2383 views)
Tasted by chcook on 3/23/2015: PNP. color straw. nose is a blast of apricot lime and chalk. swishing shows a ton of acid, but despite being trocken the fruit is dense enough to support it. sipping this is pure citrus and minerality but kept on the razors edge by the acid. for fans of blades of glory, this is 'mind-bottling' (1046 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 9/8/2014 & rated 90 points: A 5 hour Berlin VDP GG Rieslingmarathon: intense herbal nose, limy and mineralic appearance, mid- to fullbodied, some yellow fruit, long finish, (***+), 89-91 (1794 views)

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Rheingau

VDP Rheingau (Official site) | The Rheingau (Wines of Germany) | Wikipedia about The Rheingau
On weinlagen.info

The small but fine wine-growing area Rheingau offers one for the culture of the vine ideal microclimate and best soil conditions. The Rhine runs uninterruptedly almost one thousand kilometres from Basel up to its muzzle into the North Sea, in a northerly direction. With a short exception - the Rheingau. The Rheingau mountains force the river to a change in direction here. The vineyards falling in this region to the south stretch really to the sun. The king of the white wines, the Riesling, finds ideal local conditions for the unfolding of his fine fruity and elegant type of vine character on the multilayered weathering grounds with loess, loam and sand additions.
