Community Tasting Notes (average 93.5 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 99 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mr T on 2/27/2024: excellent final bottle...give it air or more years....not remotely out of gas (310 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 9/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Great age for this wine. My last bottle. A pity I rushed the case! (651 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 7/17/2022 & rated 93 points: This wine was dazzling shortly after the release and probably the best vintage from this label back then, in my opinion. This was a good bottle of wine, but I believe is past it prime. It's still showing well, good fruit and extraction but lacking the intensity, the energy that was dominant with this wine at its prime. Still, it's a dense wine that's ruby/crimson in color, dark cherry and berry fruit, cassis, a hint of oak but showing tart now and it never opened up even after two days. This was my last bottle but I will always remember how this vintage showed at it's prime. 92+/93 Points. (1591 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 4/19/2022 & rated 93 points: Just a brief note to say this is drinking at peak right now and, as the tannins are silky smooth, I see no further reason to hold it. It’s a delicious wine at a very fair price for a Mike Smith cab. (1065 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 1/1/2022 & rated 94 points: Nose of crushed fresh red and black cherry and raspberry, tart cherry, hint of charred embers, with a matching palate. Nice on PnP but could use some air as the acid was fairly prominent. With air the acid laid down and let the bouquet of fruit shine through.

Didn’t want much, didn’t expect much, and this overdelivered!

This is a wine I keep wanting to dismiss, but it’s so damn good that I find and buy more every time I open a bottle. (1720 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 11/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Drinking nicely here. Seems fairly mature with soft round tannins but nice balance of fruit and secondary notes that stretch the length of the palate. Finish is rewarding and supple. I don’t think age will help this much for my taste but I recognize tertiary elements will build. Acidity isn’t much so to me this will likely die off. (1424 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 4/25/2021: PMP late in dinner... not best way to drink this but very good (1739 views)
Tasted by jaybird1234 on 7/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Cherry, rhubarb, leather, vanilla. Low acidity with soft tannins. Drinking well, especially after an hour of decanting. Enjoyed. Would but more at this point. (2146 views)
Tasted by mpsocal on 12/29/2019 flawed bottle: Corked. All fruit was completely faded and it had a hint of wet cardboard. (2356 views)
Tasted by swade on 12/7/2019 & rated 91 points: This needed a longer decant. Third of three recent bottles and each more closed than the last. First was velvety and stellar and the last two more muscular and shut. 91 (2259 views)
Tasted by ROrmand on 9/22/2019 & rated 89 points: Very nice wine, but if tasted blind I don't think I would identify it as Cabernet. Has fruit & structure but somewhat generic. (2331 views)
Tasted by csimm on 5/3/2019 & rated 94 points: Almost a year since I’ve had this. Followed over three days. I’ve posted way too much in this wine as it is, but it’s worth saying that there is stuffing to last a number of years. Notable focus here. Drink now with a decant or hold for 3-5 years. (4531 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 1/1/2019 & rated 93 points: Great wine that is either on a movement or change to a different stage of it's existence, or has shut down, for now anyway. It's still really nice with a nose of purple violets. Palate wise, good extraction blackberry, blackcurrants, inky dark and full-bodied, but now a bit acidic and tart. This one in the beginning was a really big fruit bomb, quite exuberant, eventually settling into a really good place for my palate in my past tasting. At this stage, it will be interesting to see if this phase is only a pit stop. Time will tell. (3222 views)
Tasted by swade on 12/15/2018 & rated 92 points: This seems to have shed it's velvet and was showing a little more muscle tonight. Came in fourth of six at the tasting. Last time it was third of eleven. 92 (2009 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 9/14/2018 & rated 94 points: PnP and Wow! Followed an ‘07 Forman and what a contrast! This is in your face fruit without being over the top or overripe. On open some vanilla notes, but took 10 min to fade. This is a beauty. (2878 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 8/31/2018: A delight. No formal notes, but it was ready to go from the pop n pour. Smooth and dark, generous without being, y'know, a jerk about it. Really good length. Intriguingly, after a couple hours, tannins started to arrive on the finish. (2496 views)
Tasted by csimm on 8/13/2018 & rated 94 points: In a nice spot right now. A little air with some swirling in the glass worked well. A good deal of energy and personality here, but certainly much more resolved than when I had it last year. This maintained nice traction to counterbalance the waves of fruit pumping out on the attack. Previous notes apply otherwise.

Drink now and over the next 5+ years. (3948 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 8/13/2018 & rated 95 points: Dark red and black berry fruit, anise and suburb extraction, what a value. This Scarlett Cabernet is a top performer, an absolutely splendid wine. 95 Points, Robert Parker is spot on with his score. (2788 views)
Tasted by swade on 6/24/2018 & rated 94 points: Beautiful label. The wine was even better. Plush entry. Perfectly ripe blackberry and dust. This was a treat and came in third of 11 at the tasting behind 1996 Opus One and 1985 Graham VP. Ahead of 1997 Opus One and other luminaries. This was my wife’s #1. 94 (2334 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 6/2/2018 & rated 96 points: I adore this label and I love this vintage, see previous notes. I'm so happy that I backed up the truck on this 2013 vintage. (2873 views)
Tasted by BigTex22 on 4/6/2018 & rated 94 points: Suggest a long decant or hold as this was pretty tight. Wonderful fruit, dust, and a long finish, but its best years are ahead. Hold. (2455 views)
Tasted by csimm on 10/6/2017 & rated 94 points: Well, here I am back to awesome with the wine, experiencing some really nice black and red licorice and asphalt notes to cut through the massive core of red and black fruit. Previous notes apply, but I thoroughly enjoyed this round with the Scarlett. I'll hold for another 6-12 months, as I certainly feel like I drink these wines much too early. I'm just drawn to the flavor, flavor, flavor! But I think more time will help draw out more complexity and delineation of other specific notes otherwise lurking behind the fruit.

94+ points this go-around. I'll hold until mid-2018 if I can help it. (4494 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 9/25/2017: Big ripe and young but actually pretty well balanced and essentially open for biz despite the vintage. Fun to drink...no clue how/if this develops (3273 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 8/10/2017 & rated 95 points: Deep, vibrant and intense, I'm so happy that I loaded up on this vintage. Can one get too much of a good thing? (4290 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 7/14/2017 & rated 95 points: This wine is a delight. I thoroughly enjoyed this Cabernet with a juicy, medium well (pink in the middle) New York steak, fresh green beans and potatoes. I'm thrilled that I purchased a sufficient amount of this vintage. The Best Scarlett NV ever, in my opinion. (4366 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
