Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by fclarity on 10/8/2023 & rated 94 points: This wine had a deep yellow center with clear rims. The medium intensity nose put forth almond paste, white stone, creme brulee, and some dried apricot.

In the mouth, this wine was ripe and rich with substantial acidity and good length. It certainly improved with air.

This wine appears to be in the zone but will last 10 years or so. A nice Premier Cru. (302 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/29/2023 & rated 89 points: Caberent Based Lunch (Schur House - Riverwoods IL): As dark as could be, and very mature aromas without seeming quite oxidized. Palate is much brighter with rich apple and quince, showing a spiced honeycomb character. (1141 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/3/2017 flawed bottle: Moderately oxidized, but to add insult to injury, this was also corked. (2097 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 1/8/2016: Dinner with Jeffrey: Served blind. An attractive bouquet with a base of steel and wet river gravel but with some more developed elements people (variously) expressed as toffee apple, golden syrup, nougat and blanched hazelnuts. In the mouth, the first impression was of the evolution obvious here, and the second was of the ripping acidity. The acids initially made me think of Chablis before settling on 1996 1er Côte de Beaune. This bottle was towards the end of its peak drinking with maderised fruit and toffee elements becoming prominent. However, it paired well with my Parfait de Foie de Canard. Good but drink soon.  Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/26/2015 & rated 90 points: Ripe apple with faintly sweet spice. Power throughout with lots of dry extract and concentration for its level. The best bottle I've had of this wine in well over a decade. Not only not oxidized, but quite tasty. It's a Christmas miracle! (3077 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/23/2015 flawed bottle: Dark color and blue tones on cork were ominous signs to start. Seemed oxidized once poured, left on the counter and was far more oxidized one hour later. Not a great wine to drink, but a valuable contributor to tonight's great risotto. (3015 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 7/18/2015 & rated 89 points: Medium-deep golden yellow in color. Forward and fragrant nose of advanced, mature & well developed aromas of apples, citrus notes of lemons & limes, with buttery/butterscotch overtones, some floral notes of honeysuckle, stony/minerals, toasty oak & a hint of roasted hazelnuts. Medium bodied with a good concentration of balanced, smooth textured, mature & well developed, ripe fruit flavors of apples, white peaches, lemons & limes with stony/minerals, buttery & a touch of toasted oak. Long, lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present bit it is on the downward leg of its development, so drink up quite soon. (2736 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 9/1/2014: Wines with Larry, Huw and Paul in Martinborough: Again popped and poured. Deep gold. An awkward, cheesy, lactic bouquet showing some nutty elements with air time. The bouquet well behind the Leflaive. The Carillon was very different on palate, showing much more acidity, freshness and life than the bouquet suggested. The wine was advanced but still relatively bright and crisp. Most of us had this as a Puligny because of its Puligny-like focus, with a good squeeze of lemon, malic flavours, and some minerals and wet granite. An elegant, nuanced wine, not as rich or concentrated as the Leflaive. Nonetheless the wine had good fruit weight and power. Initially I preferred this to the Leflaive, but with my last sips of each concluded that the Leflaive was, in fact, the better wine. (2903 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/4/2012: Much like another bottle from a few months ago. Well past its peak, but still drinkable. This doesn't bode well for the remaining 3 or 4 bottles I own. Interestingly, I refrigerated half the bottle for two days and it remained at exactly the same level of evolution after 48 hours. (2274 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/2/2012 & rated 84 points: It's Monday...Time for Another Burgundy Dinner (Sepia - Chicago IL): Musty to start, which gave me some concern, but that disappeared after 15-20 minutes. Overall rather simple and straightforward with modest aromas and flavors of apple and spice. (2594 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 11/21/2010 & rated 92 points: This wine also appeared on the young side with a light yellow center and clear rims. The medium intensity nose opened up after 2.5 hours of air to show apples, pears, and some white stone. In the mouth it was medium bodied with a crisp finish and a nice mouth feel. I would say this is a refined wine and maybe not for those that want oily thickness. However, with another 5 to 10 years of age, this should move up a couple points as it gains complexity.  Tasted by sdr on 7/25/2008 flawed bottle: Oxidized. Tell-tale blue grey streak on cork. (2033 views)

Tasted by vulgar little monkey on 8/25/2007: At first, it didn't seem like it would be a great bottle, the cork was a little wet and it seemed to lack the structure I would expect. However, after about an hour it really knitted itself together into that stoney/mineral Perrieres we all know and love, with the addition of some secondary characteristics and a mellower structural presence. Really a hell of a wine, if not as refined as some other Puligny, for fans of mineral/terroir driven wines, this is fantastic. For me, this is enetering a nice window, which it should stay in for the foreseeable future. (1986 views)
Tasted by RobK on 12/25/2006 & rated 91 points: Nutty nose. Good structure and fruit. Got better as it sat in the glass. (1867 views)
Tasted by sdr on 10/6/2006 flawed bottle: There's no doubt about it - this wine is affected by the dreaded oxidation disease. The color is mid gold, the aroma a pleasant butterscotch and lemon, and a simple impression on the palate. It's drinkable, but I was lowering my score by about a point per minute. (1827 views)
Tasted by sdr on 12/10/2005 & rated 87 points: Tasted blind along side the 2002 of the same thing from David DB's collection, no one at the table could make any reasonable guess about its identity. Served at almost room temperature and also after decanting for 8+ hours, still there was no nose, no aroma, nada. The color was a light to medium dark, about right for an '89 or '95, but much more developed than expected for the high strung 1996 vintage in Puligny Montrachet. On this palate, a considerable improvement, fortunately. Some depth of fruit and minerals, but nowhere near the definition and thrust I would expect from a top premier cru in a vintage such as 1996. And it's clearly fully mature. So, sadly, another example of the dreaded premature oxidation. This wine, or at least this bottle, is at its peak, but it surely could have been so much more if perfectly preserved. (2114 views)
Tasted by graemeg on 8/5/2002 flawed bottle: NobleRottersSydney - France v Aust (Darling Mills, Glebe): It was with much anticipation I lifted my glass, and with equal speed I put it down, barely able to discern any aromas of wine under the overwhelming TCA infection. Not even tasteable. Bugger! (2002 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
