| Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by PC73 on 11/26/2023 & rated 91 points: Slightly stewed fruits in the nose, which I typically avoid as much as possible. Much cleaner and fresher on the palate. Quite airy and refined which is a lovely surprise given the nose. Great purity. Roses and dark cherry on the palate. Big wine. 15% alcohol on the label. (529 views) | | Tasted by joostentamara on 5/6/2023 & rated 94 points: We totaly agree with Burgund. Such a powerful wine (but you don"t feel it) and so complex, refined and a very long aftertaste. That is what a great wine is about for us. Will stay at this level for at least 3 years. No hurry. (894 views) | | Tasted by NebHeadLA on 2/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Wonderful Barolo from a tough vintage. The nose was captivating and the wine was velvet in the mouth. Give it an hour or more decant. (782 views) | | Tasted by WineGuyX on 1/9/2023 & rated 86 points: As always, almost no sediment. The color has obviously oranged and is very light garnet color. The nose is "singed" as Michael Broadbent used to say and is lightly aromatic of cooked black cherries and spice. Light bodied with light tannins and good acid. This is thin and washed out. What a disappointment. Just a decent glass of wine at best. Drink up. 86 (975 views) | | Tasted by burgund on 12/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Such an elegant wine. Beautiful tannins and on a level of airiness rarely seen. Mineralized taste, all finesse, orange peel and tobacco. Medium long. After 3 hours closing down getting less profound and more classic Barolo notes of dry roses, tar and light dryness. Tannins where still very fine grained. (927 views) | | Tasted by Sepsis on 3/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Has developed very nicely. Drink now and next 15 years. (1327 views) | | Tasted by Vince_chip on 12/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Belle saveurs de fruits noir, les tanins commencent à être plus approchable après 1-2h d’ouverture. Belle profondeur, l’ensemble est très agréable et long. Graphite, cerise, chocolat noir. (1138 views) | | Tasted by A_rytter on 9/18/2020: Amazing wine. despite being velvet and feminine it posesses all the charactaristic barolo notes. Wet hay, spices, leather but sweetness from chocolate, Liquirice and balsamico. ballanced acidity and medium body. fruit is ripe grape like. (1655 views) | | Tasted by burgund on 7/19/2020 & rated 93 points: One of the best wines I’ve tasted this year, if it was not for the Gramolere 2011. Very filigree and restrained style, so elegant, long and complex. (1621 views) | | Tasted by Richard P Howden on 4/18/2020 & rated 91 points: Medium weight dark red fruit, cinnamon, very nice balance. I’d like to see more on the nose, I wonder if this could be closed at all. Still a very nice wine, next bottle though not for a few years. (1850 views) | | Tasted by burgund on 1/4/2020 & rated 91 points: Somehow it is now more closed this time (1817 views) | | Tasted by StainedGlass on 11/23/2019 & rated 94 points: This is my second bottle, and I love the style of this Barolo. It is light enough in color to be mistaken for Burgundy, and it is all finesse and elegance as opposed to over-extracted dark fruits. Medium light red color with a touch of orange brown. Very classic nose and taste of dried red cherry, tea leaf, and orange peel; tobacco/smokiness; with a long dry finish. Still young but not too tannic. (1816 views) | | Tasted by burgund on 9/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Compared to Gramolere this is darker coloured, but still to the light side. It is less profound in taste missing the high lifting in the start. The wine is well balanced and has a complex nose and taste. After 1-2 hour it became even better and opened up. Taken to early for sure, but tannins where soft and fine grained and therefore worked fine already. More enjoyable than interesting and charming. Just drink it (1351 views) | | Tasted by StainedGlass on 8/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Medium light red color with a touch of orange brown. Very classic nose and taste of dried red cherry and orange peel, tobacco/smokiness; with a long dry finish. Still young but not overly tannic. (2710 views) | | Tasted by ravikalaga on 2/19/2017 & rated 94 points: PnP at home. Very elegant and harmonious Barolo. Compares to Chambolle and Volnay 1er cru in terms of finesse and finish. Did not need a decant; has a good balance of red fruits with just a hint of black fruits. Good place to kick-off a Barolo village by village tasting/collection if you are getting into Piedmont. (3059 views) | | Tasted by Sixchips600 on 1/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Rich ripe sappy red fruit. Herbal and spice on nose. Very nice, almost modern, but possibly that is the style of the vineyard? Better in a few years. (3069 views) | | Tasted by kenv on 2/6/2016 & rated 93 points: 2011 Barolo Tasting at La Festa del Barolo (Four Seasons Restaurant, NYC): Lovely, perfumed, dark fruit nose with just a hint of olives. Elegant and complex. A tasty wine that needs a few years to fill out. (5122 views) | | Tasted by rlove on 2/6/2016 & rated 91 points: La Festa del Barolo (Four Seasons Restaurant, New York, NY): Ruby. Floral and balsamic notes offer great balance of sappy earth and bright fruit, with a hint of green olive. Earth, red fruit, and spice on the palate. Elegant tannins. Balanced alcohol and acidity; very nice for the vintage. (4392 views) | | Tasted by Ultimatewinekick_Andreas on 1/3/2016 & rated 92 points: Forward and fruit driven nose with a fresh expression. We find cherries, raspberries, an abundance of perfume and hints of marzipan and some sweet notes.
The tannins are silky and fresh and the acidity is good. In the finish the wine gets slightly fiery from alcohol. This is a flirtatious wine that is easy to enjoy. (2694 views) | | Tasted by Eric Guido on 12/27/2015 & rated 92 points: The nose showed sweet spice and floral tones along with notes of saline-minerality, green olive and tart red berry, which came to the fore late. On the palate, it was densely coiled in a mix of tart red berry, spice and minerals, accented by inner floral tones and notes of herbal tea. It’s tannins were sweet and very fine, drying out the senses over time, yet never overwhelming the fruit. The finish showed dried cherry and sweet inner floral tones. Unlike most 2011 Barolos, this seems to need 5-10-years to really come together, but should be a great wine to put away by the case and check in on from time to time. (2665 views) | | Tasted by Man in Black on 12/6/2015: Pale ruby colour. The nose shows medium+ intensity scents of strawberry, red plum, red cherry, violets and hints of black pepper.
It is dry in the mouth with a medium+ acidity. It has medium+ fine-grained tannins and a medium+ alcohol. It has a medium+ body and medium+ intensity flavours. The finish is medium+.
It is an outstanding quality wine. It has a beautiful nose showing spicy and floral complexity. In the mouth it is very harmonious and elegant with a delicate balance among all the structural components, a persistent finish and a nice concentration. (1387 views) | | Tasted by Phenol73 on 9/9/2015 & rated 92 points: (At BBR's Italian Tour 2015) :: Excellent balance and rounded Barolo aromas, wrapped around a ripe fruit core. It is floral, fresh and has excellent poise, both on the nose and in the palate. In the mouth it is ripe, full of fruit; a nice long finish and very fine, sweet tannins. | Fratelli Alessandria Producer websiteNebbioloNebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.
Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.
"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

It is one of the great crus (vineyards) of the area. Verduno is one of the 11 communes that can make wine designated as Barolo, although the amount of Barolo that comes out of Verduno is miniscule when compared to the 5 major communes of Barolo: La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and Serralunga d'Alba. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
