 Tasted by GeorgeVI on 4/15/2024 & rated 92 points: Either this is overrated - or the 2004 is underrated - because I've recently had multiple bottles of both, and for all the hype of the 2000, the '04 is as well made and delivers at least as much enjoyment. Frankly, the '04 actually struck me as having more nuance and character. (1194 views)
 Tasted by Sperls on 4/6/2024 & rated 94 points: Double decanted an hour ahead of an afternoon Bordeaux tasting. Similar notes to last time as the wine still read relatively young and dark-fruited with a long finish, structure, a heady nose and power. I felt it showed better than an 00 Mouton, which was super smooth and integrated but felt at its plateau, and did very well v the other 2000s in the group, namely Cos, d’Issan, GPL. Nose full on secondary notes of sweet tobacco and silky spice notes

Palate is silky smooth with full on secondary flavors. No fruit left. Lovely length and brings me back for another sip.

 Tasted by timewithwine on 3/9/2024: Even though this wine was decanted in anticipation of heavy sediment (that did not materialize), the first sip upon opening (and prior to decanting) was delicious. Everything is in place. The wine only gained from there. A translucent maroon shimmers in the glass while cassis and cherry rise from it. Notes of graphite, licorice and grille pain join in. Each element comes across distinctly on the palate, but with cedar segueing in on the mid-palate and mocha on the finish. Fully resolved tannins simply emphasize the balance of the wine. A delight to drink. A blend of 66% Cab. Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 4% Cab. Franc. Some grainy sediment, but not as much as I would have expected for a wine of this age. Decanted. 13% alc. With seared beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon with mushroom pot pie. 03.09.24. Highly Recommended. (2005 views)

 Tasted by Purple Tooth on 2/15/2024 & rated 93 points: Another bottle of 2000 PC, brought by a friend. I thought that this one showed very mature and while easily identifiable as a Pauillac (reminded me of the 1996 Pichon Baron), the finish still remains clipped and disappointing for the pains of holding it this long. Somewhere I still have most of a case sleeping, but I hardly get the urge to go digging around for a bottle. Most of the ones I have drank have been selected by friends selecting them from the cellar. I find pre 2000 PC to be high reaching and falling short of a true library/collection wine and the post 2003 as high reaching Bordeaux that are more in line with what the masses can better understand at the word go. And to think that Lynch Bages used to be considered the modern Bordeaux....Anyway, I enjoy the smell of the cold bouquet more than the linger. Fully mature and in need of drinking now. (2915 views)

 Tasted by djhammond on 1/24/2024 & rated 93 points: Having read my tasting note from a year ago, I realise this has come a long way in the last 12 months, and seems to have finally settled in its drinking window. The harsh tanin, which was such a barrier, has smoothened out. Chocolate, blackcurrant, and tobacco profile the wine with decent balance and depth, but the finish is on the shorter side. This is a decent wine, but is never going to reach the heights of 2008 onwards, and for myself is outshone by the 2003. I dont feel there is any upside in not consuming now, but do give it a couple of hours in the decanter. (3304 views)

Wow, this is juicy, succulant dark fruits, this has an impressive core of black fruit with notable blue fruit overtones, long, pleasant tannins, smoky, long and plush texture, earthy with a good bit of eucalyptus too. More medium bodied and generous than previous bottles of this wine but still has a great core of silky tannins and acid for a great future. Flavors of black fruits, a little plum, tobacco and earth. Shared this blind with Bordeauxboy and others - easily identified as Bordeaux and one of the tasters correctly identified this as Pontet Canet. Purchased on release and stored at 55 degrees. 95 points. (2842 views)

Totally classical Pauillac profile, mature but lively, cool and slender but with lovely Cabernet fruit, refreshing acidity, firm tannins provide gentle grip, dry but perfumed finish. As a result, I will probably drink my remaining bottles in the cellar in the next few years. Loads of cigar wrapper tobacco, black currant, anise, and black olive fill the glass. Drink up & enjoy. My only regret was it was served with only a 15 minute decant and at 55 degrees. It would have performed better with a 1 hour decant and more like 65 degrees. (3112 views)

With air a touch of Mellow Birds coffee and some bright redcurrant fruit. Palate shows resolved tannins with a peppery lift. Very good persistence and so more-ish. 15 years ahead of it at least. (Pontet Canet) Beautiful precision and elegance. Reminded me of a baby '00 LLC. Laser-like focus and sweet cassis licoricey fruit. Lots of mineral and cigar box on the nose with very sweet fruit and ripe tannins. Like an undualting wavelength though opening and closing every five minutes . . . but man what fruit. Tremendous juice.

(Pontet Canet) This showed well but not as well as it could. Maybe this was closing down. Classic Pauillac nose of tar, leather, tobacco and a melange of red and black fruits. Even some sweet corn after five minutes in the glass. Dense and delineated with ripe, fat, silky fruit. Very finesse. Fruit takes over your mouth. Good inner mouth aromas and great length.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
