Tasted by Winedog1 on 5/3/2024 & rated 93 points: Motivation from stellar Bordeaux tasting event last night. Pop and pour per recommendation, with the intention of reserving a glass for day two. Nose of Colheita Port, Armagnac, and Christmas spice fruitcake. Candied fruits. Candied nuts. Pralines! Pates de fruits. Brown sugar. Caramel. Mushrooms and earth. Sour orange peel on the finish; Grand Imperial Orange Liqueur. Tart. Menthol and eucalyptus. A lot of alcohol smell and taste for Bordeaux, despite only 13% ABV. Very different than the same vintage of Malescot St. Exupery. Imbibed with Blackberry Farm pimento cheese and crackers for an appetizer, and Tomo sushi and avocado salad for dinner. On day two, the nose reminds me of Mouton Rothschild. Even my wife simply walking by the glass commented about the wonderful aroma. The sediment was black. (200 views)
Tasted by Lady Chatelaine on 2/16/2024 & rated 92 points: Good drinking window : can still be cellared for few years but fully enjoyable now. Do not decant ! we've finished the bottle the next day and it has lost its soul..
Tawny hue, delicate ripe red fruit nose. The body is silky, nicely balanced ,well melted tannins. short finish (1090 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 2/3/2024 & rated 88 points: Each to their own. Despite a long decant, there were still quite rasping tannins which gave it a rather bitter finish. On the plus side, it's made in a very classical style, but rather like a 1986, it has a very narrow taste profile - it could really do with plumper fruit midpalate. I'll hang on to my remaining bottles but I'm not over-optimistic, since I continue to think that the tannins will outlive the fruit. (1096 views)
Tasted by Eugenedinapoli on 12/27/2023: From 375ml. At its peak but no rush. Perfect w prime rib. (1442 views)
Tasted by Dinamarca on 12/2/2023 & rated 95 points: Flot moden Pauillac, det bare leverer. (1557 views)
Tasted by plavoie on 11/11/2023 & rated 94 points: The wine looks tawny colored. It tastes like bark and fig. The body is medium. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (1585 views)
Tasted by Renevin on 8/31/2023 & rated 91 points: Nez animal, écurie. En bouche , c est bien balancé. Ampleur et longueur moyennes. Tanins biens fondus. Legere amertume en finale. Agreable (1825 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 8/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Showing a degree of variability, bottle-to-bottle. More interesting and complex bottle than the last. Needed the 30 minute decant. Still a relatively short finish. (1637 views)
Tasted by gtilley on 8/19/2023: Reliably delicious. Mint, cherry jam, fried spices. Generous fruit, lovely and mature, acid is fresh. Just a delicious glass of claret. (1476 views)
Tasted by the player on 7/29/2023 & rated 90 points: Not the best of 2005 Pauillacs I've had but decent enough. Decanted and aerated for two hours. Dark ruby red with some evolution in the color. Lots of earth on the nose, perfumed cassis, currants reflected on the palate which was rich with bright red fruits and good acidity however a bit one dimensional. The wine didn't get much depth despit time in the decanter with a short and tannic finish. Nothing to write home about so that will be my maiden bottle from this producer and on to something better next time. (1612 views)
Tasted by ThalesGaspar on 6/17/2023 & rated 93 points: So good at this point. Don't even have to decant. Very smooth and nice finish. (1633 views)
Tasted by lightning on 5/20/2023 & rated 93 points: A medium-intensity nose of cigar box, cassis and cedar. Elegant on entry, a touch under medium-bodied, the midpalate is still full of cassis, graphite and cedar. Noble, finely-textured tannins with persistence. A classic Pauillac, refreshing, balanced and a joy, drinking well now but no rush to drink in the medium term. 13% ABV. (1525 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 3/12/2023 & rated 94 points: 2 hour decant, then amazing (2093 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 2/9/2023 & rated 88 points: A pretty wine -- red fruits and some earthy notes to start, the mid-palate was a bit hollow, and a shortish finish. Pleasant, but not profound. (2097 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 2/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Consistent notes. My previous comments about this being in decline were entirely off base. Cassis and pencil lead prevail. Nose slightly muted but otherwise outstanding (1907 views)
Tasted by Jacksonlane on 2/6/2023 & rated 91 points: Very typical Bdx profile - may not improve from here (1728 views)
Tasted by pjotr57 on 1/18/2023: Xxxx (1786 views)
Tasted by Eugenedinapoli on 10/19/2022: 90 min decant. Classic pauillac flavors as it enters prime drinking window ( but no rush). (2341 views)
Tasted by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on 8/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured at a wine bar. Could have benefitted from 1-2 hours in a decanter, but the quality is evident. Only getting better at this point. Drink now for the primary sensation, or wait 10 more years for the fully matured version. (2692 views)
Tasted by Intellectual Sasquatch on 7/30/2022 & rated 90 points: Still needs a good 2 hour decant, but very nice after the rough edges calmed down. (2423 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 7/9/2022 & rated 92 points: This is a nice time to start popping your corks here. Not fully mature, but clearly ready to offer pleasure with all of its sweet, dark currants, leafy herbs, flowers, peppery spice, and tobacco-packed charms. Medium-bodied, fresh and bright, 1 hour in the decanter will do the trick. Drink from 2022-2035. (3983 views)
Tasted by Intellectual Sasquatch on 5/14/2022 & rated 90 points: Tannins dominated upon opening, but still very good after about 2 hours in the decanter. (2879 views)
Tasted by Jaber on 5/9/2022 & rated 92 points: À son meilleur! (2475 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 3/11/2022: Splash decanted. First of nine at auction, clean cork, minimal sediment. Nicely aromatic. Red currant, oak. Lithe and energetic, crunchy berries, with just of bit of tannic bite on the finish. Open, but still youthful. 13% ABV. (2467 views)
Tasted by wanderkamera on 2/8/2022: Braucht Luft (2802 views)

(d Armailhac) Weekend Dear Friends, A few requested re-order wines to clean up this weekend before we move on to new horizons... All are FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to the posted limits. Have a great weekend everyone - - Jon Rimmerman *********************** 2002 Zilliken Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Spatlese (Saar) STRICT LIMIT 12/person at this price I'm not sure what is going on with the 2002 Zilliken Ockfener Spatlese but someone has obviously penned or posted a TN somewhere as we've been getting requests for it since November. We offered this wine last fall as a special and here it is again at the same price (something of a joke at this point for top-quality Spatlese with age). 2002 has always been overlooked in favor of 2001 but it's a vintage that is still considered very good to excellent and it would have received far more press if not for following in the footsteps of one of the finest overall vintages in history (similar to 2001 in Bordeaux after 2000). 2005 Chateau d'Armailhac (Pauillac) STRICT LIMIT 6/person This price for a 2005 Medoc of this caliber? This is from an original parcel in perfect condition and the wine is only hinting at what it will be a decade (or more) from now. 2005 Le Petit Mouton (Pauillac) STRICT LIMIT 3/person at this price Same Mouton family as the d'Armailhac, also at an eye-opening price for the 2005 (compare at up to $100-150+, I'm not even counting the absurd prices in NY for $200-250/bottle). Like the d'Armailhac, this is an original shipment from Mouton-Rothschild. Cedric Bouchard Inflorescence Champagne Blanc de Noirs (Val Vilaine) STRICT LIMIT 12/person This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with pristine provenance. If you enjoy a touch of fruit and fizz with your rock and minerality, this is for you... Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Germ8011 Bord7772 Bord7737 Champ6710

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
