Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 3 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bdufton on 4/28/2011 & rated 90 points: A solid wine. Loads of leather and cherry on the nose and continuing with the leather on first swish. This is a medium bodied wine with good structure - balance of acid, tannin and fruit. It is a great food wine (enjoyed with perch in a tomato sauce) and yet could use some more time to allow the fruit to establish itself a little more. (2434 views)
Tasted by trankin on 6/13/2006 & rated 92 points: Trip to Italy 2006 (part 2); 6/13/2006-6/15/2006: Nose of asphalt and red fruit. Much nicer than the 02. Again, 50% cab and 50% sangio. Enough acids from the sangiovese, but great round cab notes. A bit of smokiness. (4326 views)

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.

Madre

Madre - born with the 2001 vintage - is the newest wine of the range by Poggio Antico. It received international recognition from its first release earning #77 in the “Top 100 Wines of 2004” by the US magazine “Wine Enthusiast”, beside also having been chosen as Editor’s Pick and included in “The Year must-have Wines”.

The name “Madre” comes from the homonymous property, which has always been part of the Poggio Antico estate. This location is facing south-southwest and it is well protected from the northern winds and consequently from the risk of late frosts. Its position – particularly favorable – and its average altitude (about 380 meters a.s.l.) ensure a perfect ripening of the grapes. The soil is rich in clay and stone and guarantees optimum drainage.

Madre vineyard, of about 11 hectares, has been planted partially in 1997 and partially in 2001, with mainly Sangiovese and, on a smaller surface, with Cabernet Sauvignon. The vine density varies from 5,000 to 6,000 vines per hectare.

About 5 hectares of this vineyard are dedicated to the production of our new wine Madre, made with 50% of Sangiovese and 50% of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines obtained from these two varietals are aged separately for 18 months in 500-liter French oak tonneaux and they are then blended together. Once bottled, Madre refines in the bottle for an additional 12 months before it is released.

Madre’s production is rather limited, also due to the extremely severe low yields. It has been available for sale since January 2004.

Madre is a wine with a very intense ruby color, with purple reflections. Its bouquet is concentrated, with black ripe fruit, cocoa, coffee and spices. On the palate it is dense, structured, warm and youthful. Madre can already be enjoyed, but may also be aged for a long time, further improving its characteristics.
