Tasted by Romz on 3/23/2024 & rated 93 points: 230324: Celebrating DQ's Bday at Uovo Asador with immacutely curated menu and wines by birthday boy himself. My bottle tb which I popped 2 hrs before & bottle breathe. Nose: Blackberries, black cherries, and plums, accompanied by notes of dried fig & herbs, black pepper, with a subtle touch of smoky oak. Well-integrated tannins with concentrated flavors of ripe black fruits. Very classic Northern Syrah with showing layers of complexity with hints of licorice, spices, and a touch of earthiness (93 views)
Tasted by ash_then_chase on 2/4/2023 & rated 92 points: Softer, with an elegant aged leather baseball glove. Fruit is gorgeous. Really, really pretty fresh picked ripe red cherries. Definitely the most Bordeaux esque of the Rhônes I’ve ever had. For the starfuckers out there, this is a 100 pointer. @ Oiji Mi (480 views)
Tasted by ledwards on 10/27/2019 & rated 91 points: Needs long decant(8-12 hours) to work off some rubber, and wet cardboard. Also, a touch too polished/modern out of gate but the long decant will bring out welcomed, traditional notes. Once nose cleans up, the fruit is pure and understated. Elegant and light-bodied. (1580 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 9/25/2017: Chapoutier Ermitage Tasting (Alpharetta, GA): Reddish violet, good clarity; violets and sweet purple fruit, oak, some balm, blue fruit; slight angular tannin, fresher fruit, somewhat light and modern. (2144 views)
Tasted by galenico on 11/24/2015 & rated 92 points: 50 ANNI AIS PIEMONTE (TORINO MUSEO DELL' AUTOMOBILE): Da Magnum. Verdure bollite, prugne e cuoio. Sugo di carne e mostarda.
Bocca glicerica, ovattata e oleosa. Tannino perfettamente compiuto e vellutato. Finale di erbe amare e sale che amplifica e distende il sorso.
Molto buono e easy (3428 views)
Tasted by mjdixon on 1/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Not as much fruit as 2005 but a very good wine (2931 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 9/20/2014 & rated 96 points: A wonderful wine; dark red; expressive nose, lots of dark red fruit, licorice; deep, dense, concentrated, expressive, a bit austere and lacking that last bit of complexity and flavours, but nevertheless very good and extraordinary (3020 views)
Tasted by aajder on 9/8/2014 & rated 91 points: Good color. The nose is a bit more fruity, showing dark red and purple fruits, flowers, and hints of pepper. This is full bodied on the palate, with liquor like concentration and good finesse. The long finish shows riper tannins and a little less acidity. Very approachable. (2363 views)
Tasted by Axone on 3/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Je pense que ce vin est entre deux eaux. Attendre au moins 5 ans à mon avis. (2471 views)
Tasted by Nicksword on 2/28/2014 & rated 94 points: dark garnet color, decent legs and tear drop, aroma : dark plum, cola, black cherry, hint of lavender, earth and spice notes. velvety but still good tannins and complex layers back to smooth long finish. plum, cola with a little pepper at the end. (1595 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 2/20/2014 & rated 94 points: Opened by Dantherhonefan. 100% Syrah from 50 year old vines. Young tasting and showing no signs of being 10 years old. My favorite red of the night. Garnet color with smokey fruit aromas. Notes of ripe currants, berries and some jamminess. I also tasted some bacon fat nuances which I attribute more to Cote Rotie. Velvety texture. Delicious now but absolutely no rush to drink this. 94-95 points. (1651 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 2/18/2014 & rated 94 points: Opened by Dan at Adelle's. Cherry and red fruit notes, with some leather and bacon in there as well. There was something sweet on the finish that detracted ever so slightly for me. A real beauty - thanks Dan. 94+ (1270 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/18/2014: Aromas of dark fruit, tapenade and spice that got more full and pronounced over the course of the evening all the while holding smoked meat undertones. Medium-to full-bodied with slightly austere tannins and flavors of spice, red fruit, roasted game, pepper and currants. Red fruit and spice notes on the lingering finish. Needs a few years yet; drink from 2018+. 93+ pts. (1385 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/16/2012 & rated 92 points: In the bouquet a bit organic and barnyard impressions. The tannin is completely dissolved and smooth. Licorice root, concentrated and very pleasant acidity. Elegance and great length. Really beautiful and ready wine. After seeing what it was I was really surprised; I have tasted the 1999 of this wine and that will probably need another decade, but this wine is completely ready and so smooth. (2324 views)

Tasted by cpsmith33 on 5/1/2011 & rated 92 points: no formal notes. needs time. great nose...a little disappointed in the mouth. (2442 views)
Tasted by alr6767 on 2/12/2011: Notes from memory.

Complex nose of hay, barnyard, delicious red fruit. Delicate mouth feel, ample balanced acidity, largely resolved tannin. Round and delicious. Just a fantastic wine, one of the best in memory. (2497 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
