Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 55 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Paul Lin on 4/29/2023 & rated 88 points: Holding up well. Nice plum, blackberry, and fig notes. Seems to have lost some complexity and picked up some tartness on the finish. Still an enjoyable wine but probably at its peak. (349 views)
Tasted by jayw on 3/5/2022: Open, expressive nose. Bold, rich concentrated berry fruit, with smoked meat and crushed black pepper notes. Chewy texture. Structured and balanced, with integrated tannins, and enough acidity to keep it from being a total fruit bomb. Probably at its peak. Drink soon. (741 views)
Tasted by mats13 on 9/14/2020 & rated 94 points: My last of these sadly. Big bold chewy fruit. Fully mature at this point. (1399 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 8/2/2020 & rated 90 points: Despite a very crumbly cork, the wine was still in good shape. Very similar to the prior bottle a few months ago. Still mainly dark fruits with just a little smoke and leather notes. (1341 views)
Tasted by PJM0208 on 5/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Another of my disregarded wines.
Very good, not complex but packed full of fruit and fairly typical of a well above average vintage in Heathcote.
Well integrated and not showing any signs of age to my senses.
Unmistakably Australian Shiraz.
No one should be disappointed to find a bottle or two of this in their cellar. (1440 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 5/17/2020 & rated 91 points: So last night, opened this and drank from the cellar, nicely cool, with some blue cheese hamburgers. Was great, nicely balanced showing lots of dark berry fruit and dark currant on the long finish. Left in a coolish place overnight, just with the cork in the bottle. This wine has faded fast overnight. Not only is there a pronounced autumnal notes (dried apples someone wrote?), comes across as a little sweaty. At a slightly warmer temperature, the fruit is a little muddled, with more of an acrid finish than last night. Still good, and not flawed, but would have rated 92 last night, but only around 89/90 tonight. I'll give the benefit of the doubt and go with 91 points. Probably going to look to drink my remaining 2005 and both of my 2006's soonish. (1257 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 1/11/2020 & rated 91 points: Stewed meat, leather, ripe plush plum and red currant notes. Sweet and jammy, but age has mellowed this somewhat. I don't drink much Aussie Shiraz, but this was quite satisfying. (1240 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 4/27/2019 & rated 91 points: Tasting this from a blind sample set of 10, I was confident this was the Tatiarra Shiraz because it tastes very much like the 2004 vintage that I tasted recently. The distinctive feature is an apple-skin flavor that is uncommon in red wine. This wine also has pronounced aromas from aging, reminiscent of leather, and just a hint of black pepper. Unlike many Shirazes (and new world wines generally), this wine has a definite structure with refreshing acidity and significant tannins; it is not just a sweet mouthful of ripe black fruit. But this wine also doesn't taste anything like Northern Rhone wines either. This is definitely worth trying. (1442 views)
Tasted by red.red.vino on 3/28/2019: 3 hours in the decanter, still opening up, no time unfortunately so down the hatch. Still life in this, yet. (1172 views)
Tasted by mats13 on 12/29/2018 & rated 94 points: Aged to perfection. Lovely dark fruit, not bruising at all. (1260 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 6/14/2018 & rated 92 points: I don't drink a lot of Australian wines but this would change that. Nice stewed meats and a touch of heat on the finish. Drinking quite nice at present. (1843 views)
Tasted by red.red.vino on 3/24/2018 & rated 89 points: In the decanter for a good 5 hours. Still a bit of heat on this. Think I got this wrong 2 years ago. It was finally starting to settle as the bottle was finishing, but wasn't overly fussed this time around. Maybe a few years yet to settle. (1602 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 11/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Big Shiraz. This has improved over the last three years. Drink next 2021. (2393 views)
Tasted by red.red.vino on 9/30/2016 & rated 92 points: Almost 5 hours in the decanter and this is singing. Big, ripe, stewed, jammy purple fruits. A very full wine, a lot of upfront structure, heavy weighted and delightful. Length of the finish is 'waterfalling' short, intensity drops but the taste does linger. Heat but not overly alcoholic. This is a remarkable turnaround from last week's attempt and the only difference is time in the decanter. I have four left and will drink over the next 12/18 months or so. (2581 views)
Tasted by red.red.vino on 9/23/2016 & rated 90 points: Decanter for 3 hours prior to drinking. A deep, dull violet/ruby wine, no bricking whatsoever, colour holding up very well. Big wine up front and through the mid palate, however fades and almost dissolves through the back palate. A further hour in the wine is still opening up, back palate finish a little fuller, but not much, still considered rather short.
Undecided whether this still needs more time or whether slightly over the peak and on the decline. Might pop another next weekend and decant for a bit longer, stay tuned.... Confused.com (2645 views)
Tasted by JBVino on 7/15/2016: Unfortunately no notes but recollection was impressed with this wine's balance. Detected no heat and the wine had good structure, length and fruit was well balanced with other elements of the wine. Look forward to my next bottle. And do not assume this will get any better but should hang around for a few more years. (2053 views)
Tasted by michaelmezei on 6/30/2016 & rated 91 points: Drinking very well.......could still sit a couple more years as it still has some heat behind it. Open now until 2019 based on two consumed bottles (2133 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 4/10/2016 & rated 92 points: 2010 Two Hands Garden Series plus a lot more (Colonial Beverage, Chesterland Ohio): This showed very well I thought. Some said a bit past prime, perhaps, but it seemed right there for me. Purple in color. The nose has cherries, black cherries and some black raspberries and mint. Very soft on the palate. Enough acidity but not a lot. Plenty of fruit but not a ton and more red than purple. Nice finish. The mint really hits at the end of the finish which is interesting as well. Drink up though. (2093 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 5/19/2015 & rated 92 points: This is getting better. Good Heathcote, all funky, with big fruit and integrated tannins. Plum, leather, earth, soy. Medium finish (2041 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 5/13/2015 & rated 90 points: This has aged well.
Showing a dense core of fruit, spice, and some gravel.
This still showed a slightly rough tannic edge which I don't think will integrate further. For those who enjoy a fuller/rougher Aussie syrah, this is your wine. For these seeking something sleek and elegant, pass.
This paired well with a gnocchi bacon broccoli dish, pairing especially well with the bacon. (1995 views)
Tasted by drdecanto on 11/23/2014 & rated 94 points: Lovely wine. Popped this one after the 2004 last night since it seemed just a touch "off". This wine was huge and delicious. Loads of fruit and anise. Nice backbone. Years of life ahead, but drinking splendidly now. Had it with grilled lamb. Wish it had been a Mag! I might be conservative on the score. (2304 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 12/22/2013 & rated 91 points: I like the Heathcote Shiraz'. There is a complexity that is often missing in some of the McLaren Vale or Barossa. In fact in their best forms they have a similarity to North Rhones. However they can sometimes drift into murkiness. This is a good example. Great dark fruit with a little toast. I have another bottle that I'll keep for a while. (2956 views)
Tasted by suarezd on 9/22/2013 & rated 89 points: Not super complex, but it's a nice drinker. A little hot for the first few minutes, but it smoothed out into good sweet fruit, oak, cherry pie. (3043 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 3/17/2013 & rated 87 points: A nose of dark fruit and some heat, dark purple in color. A full bodied Shiraz, with black cherry, cassis, some chocolate, but with enough heat that it was not in balance, disappointing that it was not up to the ratings. (2880 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 2/10/2013: I do not like this wine in its current stage. Too much alcohol, too much extraction, too much... However, I will be very interested to open my next bottle in about 5 years to see how this wine has evolved. (2926 views)

(Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz) Cambrian SPECIAL Dear Friends, As one of our highlight wines from the past 4-5 years, this SPECIAL is as close to my heart as it comes. When an Australian winery is trying to make a difference this intently, I listen closely and I have since this winery’s inception. Tatiarra is one of few Australian statement makers at the moment but they have what few others in the world possess - untouched Cambrian soil that has been evolving for millions of years with no agriculture or other mineral sapping vegetation planted before the vines were forced to sink their teeth into the one of a kind terroir-fest. Think of this as a vinous equivalent of a kid about to open their presents on Christmas morning - if are a Shiraz vine lucky enough to be planted at Tatiarra, you are something special right from the get-go. For those of you that still have copies of The Big Australian Review from years past, the Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz was always ranked in the top 3-4 wines of the vintage (out of several thousand tasted). It is one of only a handful of Australian wines with the mineral soaked, tannic clout of a great Hermitage but the staying presence and singular quality of a classic vintage of Grange circa the mid-1960s. In other words, these are as highly recommended as it gets and they represent the dragon that so many of you chase with wine. Now the fun part, the winery is small - they have no room to store old vintages - they need to make room for their 2006 and 2007. So, we have the very last bottles of the three preceding years, sold as a 3-pack at a price that is not only bizarre with this level of provenance (never moved since release) but for the competitive quality (which there really is none). This is not about scores - Wine Advocate numbers are about as irrelevant on these as any series of Shiraz reviewed in the last decade (although they always get admirable scores despite this). The Cambrian cannot be put in a peer group comparative setting as it is unlike any other wine - the hallmarks of crushed rock, stone, depth and solid ore are not found outside of this micro-climate. In the end, the Cambrian is at the very upper reaches of wine in the world with nearly unlimited capacity to age (into something nobody can accurately predict but I’m surely excited to find out...) Do whatever research you need to but this price is downright crazy. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly form the source with perfect provenance: Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz 3-Pack (one bottle of each vintage) 2003 Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz 2004 Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz 2005 Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus8410
