Community Tasting Notes (average 94.9 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 166 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by sdr on 4/19/2024 & rated 94 points: Now entering prime time, the ‘04 P2 is richly flavorful. More bread and yeast than the citrus of young DP - or even a P2 on release. Powerful acidity, great length, intense. Drink now for its energy or wait a bit longer for it to soften up and become more complex. (607 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 4/16/2024 & rated 97 points: Heidi's Crew at St Geneive Minneapolis "quarterly". CV,KB,LI,SS,CS&DD. Tonight was outstanding & so much so, the group voted to meet monthly going fwd. StG's menu tonight screamed Burgundy so that didn't hurt. Candace's btl flighted with my stellar '12 Taittinger Comte. Quite a challenging flight for a new release and yet my'12 Comte BdB rose to occasion w/ its signature surreal blend of, tamed energy, complex & pristine fruit, mineral and intensity. Still Candace's Dom won out w/ its overall undeniable sense of harmony and "how do they do it" supple classiness. Elixir for the Gods & when the stars align, mere mortals like me. Lucky to be drinking a glass of both wines tonight. Especially, the '02 P2! 97+ (895 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/16/2024 & rated 98 points: Heidi's Group: Oh My! (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Light plus golden color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. My first experience with the '02 P2, but the regular '02 has been a long time favorite. So it was fun to finally get a chance to try this before my bottles arrive. Explosive and ultrafine bubbles and mousse, meet you from the start and signal the sublime elegance that is to come. Wow, simply beautiful and showing the class and complexity of the extended time on the lees. Caramel, flan, creamy and subtle, pastry crust, pear and mirabelle plum; long and contemplative, almond tart, fine lemon, brioche, toasty, stony minerality, texturally grand! This was a revelation tonight, though not so unexpected. I look forward to drinking this side by side with the '04 P2 and watch the stars align. Blissfully good. (742 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 3/17/2024 & rated 93 points: Fabulous nose but palate didn’t keep up. Perhaps it was because I traveled it. Will revisit with the last bottle (1142 views)
Tasted by Michael Hung on 3/8/2024 & rated 95 points: Initial PnP, it seemed too young, just very tight, nervy, and acidic. Really not showing much else besides the structure and acid, very lean with no tertiary or expressive primary notes. This needs air/time.

About a hour later, this has changed so much. Hints of the classic aged Dom Perignon notes sneak in with slight candied almond and butterscotch. Fruit has blossomed a bit more, but is no longer the front focus of the wine. This shows that this bottle still needs much more time to hit that point for my palate, especially with its immense structure. Waiting at least a year+ before opening another bottle. 95++ (1127 views)
Tasted by edgar on 2/25/2024 & rated 98 points: Brilliant spot right now, a bit of age and just astonishingly vibrant and light. (1300 views)
Tasted by ameyer430 on 2/11/2024 & rated 95 points: Wonderful expression of aged Champagne. Effervescent and full of life with lots of autolytic complexity. WOTN. (1325 views)
Tasted by Papies on 2/3/2024 & rated 94 points: The power of a story grows with every retelling (Restaurant Story, London): As always a focal point when this wine arrives.
We question if the bottle was pristine as the label was a bit scruffy and finitely had a bit of a tired feel that was not part of our recollection from the previous TNs we had ( Papies 95-96). Good evolution maybe surprised that it was more than we expected and blind we would have thought this was a bit older maybe from the 90s. Definitely carries the late disgorged feel, that richness of the extended maturation on lees, and is impressively elegant. Beautiful bottle for sure but small question mark here on the actual bottle. 94 (1561 views)
Tasted by MJP Hou TX on 2/1/2024: Another wonderful wine brought to dinner by a generous member of CDV713.

I love it when the night starts and ends with Champagne.

Tasted by mjdixon on 1/25/2024 & rated 90 points: Drank vs Krug 2002...by comparison Dom is thin without much vintage chardonnay taste. Citrus but not much else. Detected a slight petrol taste, is this a flaw?
Highly effervescent and energetic which surely takes away from the more refined flavours??
TBH, would rather have the standard Dom than this and not even close to the Krug for elegance, stye, mouthfeel, etc (1231 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 12/31/2023 & rated 100 points: Tiny, vigorous bubbles formed a lovely mousse in the glass, nose of toast, honey, lemon, yeast, and slate, same on the palate, big body, rich tasting, mouth filling, layers of flavor and complexity, this is at its best when served thoroughly chilled, lovely, long flavors on both tbe finish and aftertaste, the aftertaste stays with you a long time, showing its pedigree, like us-49 years together and still kicking, this wine still has time left photo uploaded.  Tasted by Sean Tay on 12/31/2023 & rated 98 points: 7th bottle tasting.

Pronounced nose with notes of brioche, yeast, toast, lemon, apple. High acidity. Long finish. (1309 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 12/13/2023 & rated 96 points: Salon Ficofi Paris walkabout tasting and dinner, no detailed tasting notes. From MAG. Very generous and complex. Youthful aromatics. Expensive but good. (2019 views)

Tasted by csimm on 11/16/2023 & rated 97 points: This presents as super young and chiseled, but also giving mid-palate electricity with wonderful yellow citrus and stone fruit. Chalk-laced minerality without being powdery or “chalky” necessarily. Acid is super compelling and energizing. I would have never called this out as a 2002. What a great combination of breadth and precision. Lemon and lime zest on the finish with white rock, lichee, and green and yellow pear skin. This is like the 2013 Dom on a rocket ship. This 2002 P2 is the best Dom I’ve had. (2537 views)
Tasted by sh6k on 11/10/2023 & rated 96 points: One of my favorite wines, which I hadn't had in a while, so fun to see it again. Good bottle, no oxidation or mushrooms showing yet, all broad palate filling power and nutty richness. Acidity is receding for sure, though the 2002s were never massively acidic. Tastes like the ripe ripe vintage that it was. Just had a glass as part of a wine pairing so only got to spend a few minutes with it; would have liked to be with it for an evening. (1406 views)

Tasted by AdinG on 10/4/2023 & rated 93 points: Had some funk to it when first opened. Blew off after 20 minutes or so. Tasted good. Good structure and acidity. Expectations may have been too high, but did not think it was exceptional though. (1551 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 9/29/2023: This may well be the best Champagne of around two decades of age I have ever tasted. Certainly the best Dom Perignon I have had in as long as I can recall. The description of Burgundy with bubbles is thrown around perhaps a bit too often, but it's appropriate here, and not just any Burgundy -- think Montrachet with bubbles. In a word: thrilling. (1605 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 9/4/2023 & rated 93 points: Magnum, which I like significantly more than previous bottles. Better balance, sweetness has further calmed down, white fruit, creamy. 93+ (1931 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 8/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Continues to drink gorgeously with loads of rich, effervescent, chalky fruit that is just barely starting to show some earth tones. (1969 views)
Tasted by DAN BAILEY on 6/27/2023: Had a friend in from HK for dinner last night so I decided to try another of the 02 P2s. Initially, more open and deeper than last week’s bottle. However, as we drank through 2nd and 3rd glasses each, it tightened up considerably. Will leave the rest for a few years. (2147 views)
Tasted by DAN BAILEY on 6/22/2023: Part of a great flight with the 96 oeno and 98 P2. Very youthful. Sharp, acidic attack. Grated ginger and a bit metallic. Just needs more time. (1982 views)
Tasted by BrionHammond on 6/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Tastet again last month and what a display. Youthful with tiny bubbles. Perfect way to celebrate my friend new baby (1971 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 6/21/2023 & rated 96 points: Super elegant structure and acidity. A bit more developed than the 2004 P2. Incredible overall balance and a fantastic long finish. I could sip on this for hours. (IG) (1636 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
