| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.9 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 4/27/2012 & rated 91 points: Lovely pale white gold; wonderfully fresh at seven years old, floral, slightly honeyed, citrus, subtle but distinctive; good weight (15%!) and intensity, smooth and velvety but not heavy, with a lovely light touch rather, elegant bitters, subtle minerality, good length. (1636 views) | | Tasted by JHaslam on 7/31/2010 & rated 88 points: Pale golden yellow, understated color. Produces very nice aroma of minerality and limestone, with a hint of lemon peel. Slightly viscous in mouth, nice structure with medium-low fruit and medium acidity. Wet stone and a touch of lemon. Nice wine with good acidity and finish. Not as heavy as a chardonnay, but more heft than a pinot grigio. (2006 views) | | Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 1/6/2010 & rated 92 points: Exceptional value at full price, let alone close out. Clean as Ellen described with good acidity. Paired perfectly with shrimp, and Cowgirl Creamery Truffle Tremor. (1759 views) | | Tasted by Deb293 on 11/21/2009 & rated 87 points: Light weight but a nice change from ordinary varieties. Not profound, but has some spicy character and would pair well with just about anything that calls for white wine. Liked it better in a restaurant (by the glass offering at Mas, NYC); at home it was OK but not exceptional. (1620 views) | | Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 6/24/2009 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured to accompany my shrimp dinner. Answered the call. An unusual white I find quite satisfying and an extraordinary value at current distress prices. (1996 views) | | Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 5/25/2009 & rated 91 points: Crisp acidity, drank beautifully. Extraordinary value from W Wine Boutique. (1306 views) | | Tasted by Dids on 2/22/2009 & rated 90 points: It produces a funky wine. Highly floral and honied on the nose has a sherried/oxidative appearance. There is a nuttiness to it aswell. On the palate a star Creamy and oily texture tocu of banana and crunchy pear. Vivacious acidity carries the body giving mineraility and a touch of spice, thus creating a long length. Only nag is the oaky tannins coating the teeth. (1204 views) | | Tasted by eastover on 1/2/2009: out for Indian food with Pam and Harry - this bottle preffered over the other. (1291 views) | | Tasted by wineismylife on 9/28/2008 & rated 88 points: WIML88? No tasting note. Purchased by the glass from a wine bar. Came across as a little too light on the palate. Would like to try again from a fresh bottle. (790 views) | | Tasted by nschmidt on 9/22/2008 & rated 90 points: Drank with the Kushner's in Ocean Grove. Everyone loved. Good QPR. (1324 views) | | Tasted by KeithAkers on 4/1/2008 & rated 90 points: nose: really interesting nose of green apple, petrol, hazelnuts, and bits of peach cores. very oily nose
taste: a lot of green apple with some oil components, with some floral tones and nutty tones
overall: really fills the mouth and leaves a really nice lasting nutty and oily finish. Really interesting stuff and is why I really enjoy these rhone white varietals. Nice complexity and feel (1332 views) | | Tasted by ashegedyn on 3/27/2008: Very light color, medium nose with lots of mineral and spice notes. Melon(?) perhaps unripe. Nice round mouthfeel with good acidity and slight pleasant bitterness that gives it a medium long mineral finish. Not sure how to compare or rate it since this is one of my first white grenache blends. Very nice on the palate and a firm finish. Interesting. (805 views) |
| Domaine du Clos des Fées Producer website
The vines were planted with pickaxes, barely touching the layers of parent-limestone, in pockets of pure clay, zigzagging along impressive green oak trees.
The stones were taken out of the vineyards one by one, by hand or pulled by a horse, then patiently and skilfully stacked by generations of wine growers from another era. They worked hard and long hours.
The conditions were so difficult that workers hired to plant the first vines in parts of the vineyard simply gave up. The elders in the village nicknamed the location "little Siberia" as a result.
What exactly does the word «Clos des Fées» ? In French, a «Clos» is a small parcel of vines surrounded by walls. A Fée is a «mythical being, in general a woman, with magical powers» which she uses with the help of a magic wand. Le Clos des Fees is a vineyard where the fairies would have lived, if they existed. The place is very isolated, beautiful, wild, very romantic which inspired us for the name.
