Tasted by Wine Canuck on 3/11/2024 & rated 93 points: [Tasted Double Blind] This pours deep ruby in the glass with light bricking. The nose is rich and extracted in a clearly classical napa valley style. Aromas are of black currant, blackberry, pencil lead, cigar ash, fire pit, charred wood, a touch of eucalyptus and a whisp of mint. Definitely some paulliac vibes combined with touches of mint and eucalyptus, pointing to classic Napa Cab. The palate is densely structured with extracted black currant and ripe blackberry notes on entry. Tannin is medium minus and acid is medium. The Finish lingers nicely replaying much of the nose. I thought this was clearly an old Napa Cab from a classic producer and a 'bigger' vintage. I wondered about something from the late 70s. Really nice showing from this 1985. I usually prefer something more open knit, less dense and darkly fruit but I found some nice appeal here. (446 views)
Tasted by Chekib m. on 9/9/2023 & rated 92 points: My last of bottle of a case bought in auction about 6 or 7yrs ago.
This one didn’t look good; corroded capsule, mid shoulder, the cork came out in pieces. Luckily the wine was totally fine.
Light to medium garnet.
Very nice, aged and mellow nose. More stewed red berries than blue or black. Some cassis, tea and tobacco leaves.
Light body, everything is soft and mellow. The intensity has faded a bit, but it is still a very elegant and ethereal wine with soft baked red berries, orange peel.
Very good length.
This is definitely getting nearer the end but still very enjoyable. More similar to an aged burgundy than a Cabernet Sauvignon. (895 views)
Tasted by paulst on 4/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Initially light and lean; opened after 2 hours to velvety tannin and soft sweet blackberry. (1423 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 4/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Leather, earthy underbrush, dried herbs (heavy on mint), and faint dried black cherry. Some fennel/anise spice shows up on the palate. Smooth, resolved, drinking well. Probably just a couple years left that I'd find enjoyment in this, but supporting structure is in place. Great with dry aged steak (1148 views)
Tasted by paulst on 2/2/2023 & rated 97 points: Earth and leather; smooth, earthy and balanced; blackberry and cassis; long elegant finish. (1591 views)
Tasted by paulst on 12/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Restrained and mature; earth and light raspberry; elegant light velvety finish. (1595 views)
Tasted by paulst on 12/11/2022 & rated 95 points: Tar; elegant and smooth licorice-blackberry; sweet long velvety finish. (1329 views)
Tasted by paulst on 11/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Restrainted with light blackberry-cherry; lean tannic finish. (1139 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 10/29/2022 & rated 92 points: This wine was just gorgeous straight from the first pour. Incredible nose floral and fruity, so much fruit on the palate mature but not stewed or fading. Spices and hints of leather. Some
Noticeable wood even after all this time. But overall a beautiful wine. (2471 views)
Tasted by coremill on 10/28/2022: Fully mature, very pretty. Consistent with my note of several years ago, but the perhaps the tannins are showing a bit more. No reason to hold. (899 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 7/13/2022 & rated 96 points: At a wine dinner in NYC @ Marta. Wow, intoxicating perfume of cassis, also some red berries, cinnamon, orange zest, some menthol notes, sweet spices, graphite, also a touch of smoke. It‘s medium-full bodied, very classic in structure and appearance, it has medium acidity and medium- tannin that has melted away mostly and is silky. An excellent bottle and a real privilege to drink this Napa classic from a perfectly stored, pristine bottle. (1617 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 4/30/2022: This was a pleasant surprise for me. I've had quite a few of these and they sometimes come across as missing the fruit that I expect and not quite having the interest level of an old Bordeaux. Drank next to an 82 Bordeaux and you can see the similarities in style (and honestly if blind not sure you would pick them new world/old world). There's a nice character to this wine though. Cigar and smokey and maybe just a background of black fruits. Drinking just about perfectly right now. Not going anyway, but not sure extra time is going to do much. (1664 views)
Tasted by finediningnyc on 11/6/2021 & rated 94 points: Another perfect 85. Fresh as a daisy. Continued to improve and elicit more and more fruit expression in addition to its complex tertiary elements over the course of the night. Not my typical wine of choice, but when you have an old school Napa cab like this, well stored and in pristine condition, it is a reminder why they hold such a special place in the wine world’s history.  Tasted by Dave Canada on 6/23/2021 & rated 92 points: This is really explosive on the nose from the first pour...gorgeous notes of truffle, moss, pencil lead, cigar box, eucalyptus, sweet cherry, blackberry, cassis an a pretty floral note that wraps it all together.
Palate is fully resolved and quite complex but just a touch thin...not nearly as vibrant or layered as the nose.
Finish is medium. (3136 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 12/29/2020 & rated 89 points: Slow ox for 30 minutes. This has a pleasant nose of ripe black fruits, tobacco and minerals. The wine itself is actually quite medium bodied and almost too clean- I wonder if this is one of those wines they sterilised during this period. There is a decent flavor palate of black currants, tobacco, and herbs though. It just lacks stuffing, character and length. (2968 views)
Tasted by finediningnyc on 9/18/2020 & rated 94 points: A beautiful bottle. It was alive and well with wonderful complexity, an alluring bouquet and soft silky tannins. Caresses the palate with each sip. Sweet red currants, cedar, tobacco and crushed red flowers. Finishes with very good length and persistence. As fresh as can be. (2953 views)

Tasted by glucker on 6/8/2020 & rated 91 points: - Crimsom color - Still drinking well. (2223 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 4/12/2020: Darn it, just realized I drank this months ago and didn’t make a note. It was excellent, both for me —I was struggling with smell loss at the time so not all wines were tasting good—and for my husband who normally prefers younger wines. This was in great shape and drinking well. Sad that I didn’t make notes. (2904 views)
Tasted by TahoeSki on 1/24/2020 & rated 91 points: Posting 5 days late so lacking detail. Cork 3/4 soaked. Still showing well but lacked complexity. Remember some cedar, and it did become better after a few hours in the decanter. Have several more and not in a rush to consume, but they are not going to improve. (2195 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 8/30/2019 & rated 92 points: Tasted alongside a 78 Inglenook Cask and an 86 BV Latour, this one really kept up. Of all the aged Cabernet enjoyed tonight, I would say that this one had the more herbaceous character. Oregano, rosemary, black pepper and blackberry. Had not yet gone to a tomato paste note. Definitely was not gone, but also definitely on the other side of the hill. Compared to an 84 Chappellet enjoyed the week prior, this one was in a much better spot. What a treat. (2802 views)
Tasted by NutmegNative on 6/3/2019 & rated 94 points: A cellar treasure, with 8 bottles left in the case after all these years. This is the first bottle opened in over a decade. Upon opening, it was initially thin. But after a couple of hours in the glass, it opens up and shows it's body quite nicely. A solid aged and well-balanced Cab, oodles of complimentary flavors blending harmoniously in the glass. Tar, tobacco and leather notes in the nose. Flavors of oh-so-smooth blackberry with a tinge of licorice nicely blend with nuances of oak. A real pleasure to drink, and absolutely worth the wait! An American Bordeaux. (2694 views)
Tasted by Woodbridge Brad on 4/2/2017 & rated 91 points: Still showing nicely, this bottle was from a fellow winemakers cellar and the ullage was well into the neck. If you like very aged Cabernets this was a very nice example. A bit past its best drink date but still quite nice with fruit and balance. (6418 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 9/8/2015 & rated 91 points: My daughter's birth year - first bottle drank in 2011 and this in 2015. The cork crumbled on extraction but was not wet through. Only a small amount of sediment, surprisingly. No bricking but the wine looked a bit faded. The nose was muted but lovely - saddle leather, old tobacco, only a bit of mint. The wine felt soft in the mouth, medium-bodied. Soft blackberry, bits of red fruit that teased at the edges of consciousness. Mostly masculine flavors though - the tobacco and leather from the nose. A bit of mint or eucalyptus mid-palate. Firm blackberries. Tannins are totally integrated and soft but carried the finish. Really a wonderful experience. A 30-year-old Napa cab from a classic producer just doesn't come around often enough. I'll take one of these over the high-alcohol, high-rev, high extraction wines any day. (10348 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
