Community Tasting Notes (average 85.7 pts. and median of 86 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by larslind on 2/20/2011 & rated 82 points: Kind of sweet in the taste. Had a distinct smell of something I can't describe (not a bad smell) (2400 views)
Tasted by vfsi on 2/7/2011 & rated 87 points: Nice bottle of Merlot Red fruit smell and taste with a noticeable spice before the medium short finish. I would drink this wine again. (2506 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 2/29/2008 & rated 86 points: This was a nice wine given the price. Started out as just black fruits with a liiiitle hint of something from oak (black licorice or vanilla, something like that) on the nose. Tasting felt a little thin and the finish wasn't very long, but had good grip despite how quickly it disappeared. After being open about an hour, the nose was nicer--smelled of blueberry jam and a little chapstick. (2721 views)
Tasted by wineco on 2/7/2008: Perfumy, "don't like the smell but I like the taste" 2% milk, more bitter, dry (2789 views)
Tasted by ceshelman on 9/27/2007 & rated 86 points: Great wine for the price. Bit strong on the tannins with a bit of bite in the finish. (2829 views)

Concannon Vineyard

Producer website

Concannon Vineyards was founded in 1883 in Livermore, California and is a registered historical site. They were the first to bottle a varietal petite sirah in 1961. Owned by conglomerate The Wine Group, the Concannon family, including patriarch Jim Concannon, is still involved in running the winery, which produces several tens of thousands of cases a year.

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
