Tasted by Senso-beak on 10/30/2023 & rated 87 points: Opened and poured. A little funk on the nose, this wine tasting similar to prior bottles with a smooth dusty brick profile and a garrigue element to the braised red fruits. (238 views)
Tasted by Lady Chatelaine on 2/16/2023 & rated 89 points: Sad sniff.. it's my last one
Twenty years after, this wine shows it has been made with attention
at the eye, a discreet white rim and a purple colour
in the mouth, what dominates is the elegance, the sweet tanins, a bit short about its length
nice quality/price
for a "second wine", its longevity is proven and one can bet on few years more (442 views)
Tasted by ljl on 6/2/2021 & rated 92 points: Still dark with no hint of age. Although the cork crumbled on opening it had no affect on the wine. At first, typical roughness of a St Estephe, but smithed out quickly. (1190 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 5/8/2021 & rated 88 points: Opened and poured, a light to medium body and a medium red color profile. Feminine and somewhat tart, showing carries and reds on an acidic Frame. Got a bit better with some more air, revealing some puckering astringency and a little Tannin. Still drinking well. (1099 views)
Tasted by Lady Chatelaine on 12/7/2020 & rated 88 points: Still ok
I keep the last one in my cellar for..2022 ! (1344 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 5/1/2020: Dusty attic nose, hint of furniture varnish. Cabernet predominates. Tannins are in a good place; finish just a touch dry. Nice time to pull the cork. (1394 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 10/21/2019 & rated 88 points: Pleasant and non descript (1624 views)
Tasted by ljl on 9/10/2018 & rated 90 points: Pretty dark. Velvety tannins. Perfect balance of fruit and tannins (1696 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 4/5/2017: Opened with dinner. In a really nice place right now. Feminine yet dark, minor bricking on the rim. Somewhat shy nose but balance and structure is really solid. Not overdone, but not too thin, showing cherry and reds predominate. Lithe. Will update with more notes. (2668 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 11/4/2016 & rated 88 points: Opened and poured. Some barnyardy musk on a creamed vanilla cherry nose. Very dark in the glass. Medium bodied. Fully mature and smooth, with vibrant acidity keeping the restrained flavors lively. Solid table wine. (2717 views)
Tasted by den8 on 6/18/2016: Not overly complex, have reached its maturity to drink, nice aroma though, a classic second wine of a mid range growth (2998 views)
 Tasted by OW_SOSPEL on 3/6/2016 & rated 88 points: Dégusté à l'aveugle.
(3032 views)
Tasted by Jonasan on 12/28/2013 & rated 88 points: Opened an hour before drinking with lean sirloin steak. Massively tannic and almost black like old-style Cahors. Still way too young to drink, hence the rating, but feel has the potential to magnificent. (4752 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 12/15/2013 & rated 89 points: Occasional tasting group (@ My place Bordeaux 2002 plus some other nice wines.): Drank Pagodes de Cos beside the Cos d'Estournel 2002. The second wine has a beautiful bouquet and is in a really nice drinking stage now. Supple and round tannin and all in good harmony. On the other hand, on the palate the wine doesn't deliver what the bouquet promises. A bit thin on the mid-palate. The Cos itself had a deeper bouquet with even more beautiful oak, smoke, cedar and cassis. On the palate also more concentrated with the same impressions as in the nose and some licorice and bell pepper as well. The other (experienced) tasters who got these two wines blind, only knowing it was 2002 Bdx, were not sure (except for one). They agreed the Cos was more luxurious in the nose and more concentrated on the palate, but the Pagodes was so much more friendly now. They wondered if the second bottle, the Cos itself, would improve with more ageing. Personally I think it will. Three more years of cellaring will probably be wise I suppose; So around 2017. My personal scores for today; Pagodes 89 and Cos 91+ (4349 views)
Tasted by Armando B on 10/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Very nice bdx with restrained dark fruit, medium weight, some cigar box. Softening but still present tannins. Very charming. Ready to drink. (3595 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 4/19/2013 & rated 87 points: Much, much better than the previous bottle. Intoxicating nose - Cedar, tobacco, with hints of plum. The wine was balanced and drinking very well. Very good. (4267 views)
Tasted by Strikermax on 3/30/2013 & rated 88 points: Donkerrood, geen verkleuring. In de neus wat groene paprika, braam en mineralen. In de smaak wat onrijp. Harde tannines en wat bitter in de mediumlange afdronk. (1641 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/30/2013 & rated 88 points: Regular dinner group (@ My place): Bordeaux; that is clear on the nose. On the palate red as well as black fruits, firm acidity and melted tannin. A touch of pleasant barnyard as well as red and green bell peppers. I could drink this wine over a few days and the wine developed for the better. Ready now and a future of a few more years. Really nice, but a little less exclusive than 6 years ago. (4160 views)
Tasted by wap1961 on 2/9/2013 & rated 89 points: Very solid Bordeaux. Nice mellowed tannins and earthy flavor, fruit tastes more cooked or dried than fresh and maybe some slightly spicy roast veggies. Not a 'knockout' wine but wonderful with food (we had meatloaf) and drinking well now. It certainly has a few more years in it. (2911 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 1/10/2013 flawed bottle: Incredibly oxidized glass btl.
Was compensated with pre-WW2 Whiskey. A good wine often performs, a good whiskey ALWAYS performs.
Maybe I drop wine and pursue whiskey instead :-) (2772 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 12/30/2012 & rated 90 points: initial brambles/barnyard felt like this was opened too soon
but this evolved quickly into some dark fruit, french earth and interesting depth along with tobacco and leather
enjoyed by all with a december outdoor grilled steak (2435 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 10/21/2012 & rated 80 points: Lovely nose. Delicate yet complex. But the taste is such a let down. Has an awkward greenness that I sincerely hope will resolve in time. Will try again a few years down the road. (2680 views)
Tasted by wkphang on 9/21/2012 & rated 85 points: Not as good as 2005, but good nontheless for a 2nd lable in a difficult year.
Can consider buying more if the price is right (2608 views)
Tasted by cwiebe on 8/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Not unlike a WA Bordeaux blend, like a D2. (2679 views)
Tasted by MarkL on 10/24/2011 & rated 91 points: Clear medium ruby
Clean nose initially/obviously red fruits (strawberry) but lookin harder a strong blackberry undertone. Violets and vanilla. Some spice.
Dry. High acidity. Medium tannins. Integrated with just a touch of greeness to them. Primary fruits. Brambly and stewed apple. Touch of lichorich.
Full bodied.
Long finish.

Nice. (3754 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
