Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 65 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by IvanLi on 4/27/2024 & rated 93 points: Buttery chard with tropical fruits, apples, cocoa, butter and French oak. Viscous and concentrated on the attack the wine lacks a bit on the finish and the mid palate. Excellent example of a New World Chard.
PS: with more time I would downgrade it a half point to 93-94 as the there is too much unintegrated acidity on the finish (acidified?) (177 views)
Tasted by Andy2014 on 4/14/2024 & rated 92 points: Medium gold. Medium+ aromas of lemon, lime, grapefruit, apple, pear, cedar, clove, vanilla, cream, brioche, hazelnut, almond, cut grass. More intensity on the palate. High acidity, medium+ body and medium+ finish. This is very good. Suitable for further ageing but can't help feel this is a little overpriced. (313 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 12/27/2023 & rated 91 points: Honey colored
Soapy, citrus nose. Odd. Ripe stone fruit.
Tight, nice acidity. Loads of Meyer lemon. Medium plus finish. A little waxy.
My last glass was the best. This wines needs some air. Don't drink too cold. May improve with some age, but ready to go now. (1153 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Young but ever so pretty , granted it is an oaky Chardonnay but it’s also in a way balanced and soft for the style and the oak adds to the mix rather than dominate. Soft citrus , round and polished, vanilla and soft buttery texture. Lots of life here.92 for now (1183 views)
Tasted by Dine&Vine on 10/30/2023: Pox bottle. Flawed. (1223 views)
Tasted by WineJ2019 on 2/15/2023 & rated 92 points: For me a good balance between newer world style but not over the top. Maybe stretching the QPR but I enjoyed it nonetheless (2684 views)
Tasted by brujazz on 12/28/2022 & rated 92 points: So, its not the Trenton, Durrell, Vine Hill, Dutton or any of the Kistler single vineyard Chardonnays. So? Well, so what. This is their entry level, restaurant Chardonnay blend and its a very well balanced mouthful of juice, with oak, butter and citrus in a long complex finish. Its expensive but easily $25 to $30 a bottle less than the single vineyard offerings and presents a lot of quality for the price. (2591 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 12/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Reductive at first. Really nice mix of pineapple and citrus fruits. Full bodied but with bright acidity. Kistler has really shot up in price at retail and on the secondary market, but this entry level offering is great. (2136 views)
Tasted by Emil Oliver on 12/23/2022 & rated 92 points: A powerhouse of a wine. Classic Cali chardonnay nose of oak, toast, some butter, slight ripe tropical fruit notes. Kicks off with fresh acidity, but after second explodes with concentrated fruit and spice notes, almost burning on the tongue. Impressive concentration. Long toasty exit.

Served with lobster soup. Good combo, but the wine almost overpowered the bisque; that says something about how dense this wine is. (2197 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 11/30/2022 & rated 90 points: Not my style of a Cali Chardonnay, but enjoyable nonetheless. I suppose not all Kistler's are created equal. Posting these notes from St Martin so many of the whites we are having are French. This one is quite Burgundian in style. Lemon, vanilla, grapefruit and a mid pallete which leans toward flavors of chewing cardboard. Long finish with lingering notes of that paper/ cardboard taste. (2201 views)
Tasted by gew71walsh on 11/15/2022 & rated 91 points: Deep gold in glass. Nice acidity. As others have stated more Burgundian in style. I got some citrus and pear on the nose and palate. Nice finish. Paired well with salad with lemon based vinaigrette. (1363 views)
Tasted by Mario17 on 10/29/2022: Beau Chardo qui ne fait pas trop américain, assez droit, acidité fine, légère chaleur enfin finale mais rien de trop dérangeant. 89-90

More Burgundian than American in style, which is a good thing, acidity is medium, slight alcohol feel in the finish but not too disturbing, nice. (1459 views)
Tasted by Hanibal on 10/28/2022 & rated 90 points: Good chardonnay, nice attack on white fruit. Had a little heat at the back end. Medium finish. (1758 views)
Tasted by BHF1980 on 8/3/2022 & rated 90 points: A nice Chardonnay, not an oak bomb like one might expect from California. You could quite easily find better examples of Chardonnay at half the price, so this doesn't cut it for me in terms of value. (1904 views)
Tasted by nnektarios on 6/12/2022 & rated 89 points: Pale gold. Pretty much closed on the nose for the first 30-45 minutes. Vanilla, butter and (unfortunately) a small touch of peach and apricot. No citrus notes. Better on the palate, although it was round and ripe it was also fresh. High and present alcohol. Medium finish. Not a good price for the value. (2348 views)
Tasted by JEdgington on 6/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Enjoyed with a dinner of clams with linguine. Perfect pairing really highlighting the buttery flavors of the wine. (2076 views)
Tasted by Stefillion on 5/20/2022 & rated 89 points: This is a wine that should spend some time in the cellar. Tried one bottle at the time or purchase and it showed unusual acidity for a Kistler. I will let it spend another year or 2 before opening the next one. (2090 views)
Tasted by mrkurtz on 5/6/2022 & rated 91 points: Really intense butterscotch, vanilla, toasted sugar and hazelnut aromas, with a kind of lemon zest mixed in. Palate has some searing acidity, which somewhat overwhelms the citrus and pith flavors initially. Electric energy and texture, which I think can benefit with more time. A little bit too oaky for me but probably will integrate with age. (2200 views)
Tasted by grapenomad on 4/5/2022 & rated 93 points: What a big boy! Deep golden in the glass. Aromas blast out of the glass in forms of melon, pineapple, pear, brioche, toast and butter. Bit of coconut in there as well, almost like a pina colada vibe going on here. Palate is thicccc but is complemented by a beautiful acidity that brightens things up to the max. Long, smooth finish you just want to have in your mouth all day long. Stunning effort for people that are not scared of going out of Burgundy. (2292 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 3/31/2022 & rated 91 points: Chambolle night: A complete doppelganger for a Burgundy at first, most of us guessed Meursault for this. The oak gave a rich wine and a darker colour that made it seem older than it was. Still had ample acidity to give a balanced wine that was very drinkable. Better on pop-and-pour as the alcohol started showing after a couple of hours. (2207 views)
Tasted by Weiner on 3/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Good taste, a touch of honey, lemon marshmallow. IDK (1752 views)
Tasted by Amdal on 3/14/2022 & rated 89 points: Lukt og smak sitrus, røkelukt. Mye smak og lengde (1653 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 3/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Very nice, off the restaurant list, served of course too cold. Once it warmed up in the glass, bouquet of fruit. (1496 views)
Tasted by Jessie and Max on 12/25/2021 & rated 92 points: Pale gold. The nose hits the buttery spot! Also brioche, pear, quince, vanilla, starfruit, and toast on the nose -- nice and complex. Moving to the palate -- richness! Very creamy, not too high acid, but with tang on the finish as well as some minerality emerging. Nice and smooth and full-bodied.

Served it after dinner on Christmas and everyone was impressed. Worth buying for a special occasion. (2007 views)
Tasted by daghaug on 11/28/2021: Drukket uten notater, men denne har alt du drømmer om i en amerikansk chardonnay - fedme, smør, popcorn, vanilje og toast, samtidig som den har en fin, frisk syre. Herlig! (2211 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
