Community Tasting Notes (average 86.6 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Supercuts on 3/1/2024: I was quite impressed. Flavorful. Joanna did not like. (377 views)
Tasted by JamesDrinks on 10/27/2023 & rated 85 points: For $9, a good value. Served it at a party and some people complimented it assuming I wasn’t serving them garbage - got’em! Aftertaste can be slightly harsh but after the first glass it’s pretty darn good for $9. (802 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 9/9/2023: Consistent with prior notes; good but not great. (843 views)
Tasted by stesod on 4/7/2023: Mkt god
Bra till lax
Frun gillade den också (1353 views)
Tasted by capnfutsal on 2/4/2023 & rated 87 points: See prior notes. Drink now. (1149 views)
Tasted by capnfutsal on 11/23/2022 & rated 89 points: Like a cross between a Rhone rose and Provence rose - lighter than Bandol. Nice fruit notes. More detailed notes to follow; have three bottles left. Good QPR. (962 views)
Tasted by capnfutsal on 11/23/2022 & rated 89 points: Consistent with previous note. (1164 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 10/23/2022 & rated 89 points: Much better than the bottle enjoyed back in June; I didn’t notice the bitterness noted last time. This wine shows best when served lightly chilled and not too cold. Chalky minerals, red blossom, ripe strawberry, spicy raspberry, yellow peach, and juicy watermelon reflect the aromatic and flavor profile. Medium acidity adds freshness. Slightly clipped finish. Worked well with the habanero Gouda, charcuterie and whole grain crackers. No complaints for a <$10 rose. (962 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 7/19/2022 & rated 88 points: A solid rose with decent fruit, good acidity, and satisfying finish. Not the best rose out there by any means but a pretty good value. (946 views)
Tasted by daveyk39 on 7/16/2022 & rated 86 points: Reasonable with a quite a bit of body for a Rosé, slightly cloying with a bitter edge. (820 views)
Tasted by vino_per_tutti on 6/19/2022 & rated 87 points: Mauest gets this right - especially in the recommendation to let this come to room temperature before judging. Served cold (it's rose!), and seemed insipid and watery, with an almost medicinal strawberry flavor dominant. Flavors, texture and finish don't happen until room temperature or above. Sweet red fruits and flowers; strawberry, raspberry and watermelon rind on the nose and palate. Creamy and sweet on the medium long finish. Better on its own than with food. (806 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 6/5/2022 & rated 86 points: Great for the money, very pleasant, fruit forward aromas supported with some noticeable minerality. Starts juicy on the palate, but unfortunately, ends with a very unpleasant bitter note. I don’t remember the 2019 version displaying the bitter note. Hopefully, this will subside with additional cellaring. (744 views)
Tasted by sababa1022 on 5/26/2022 flawed bottle: Haters gonna hate. This is good juice at a good price. Refreshing on a hot summer’s day while watching the
Martians fly overhead. (756 views)
Tasted by WineChild33 on 5/23/2022 & rated 88 points: Slight mineral notes with fruitiness and gentle sweetness. Lingers on the tongue for a moment, allowing for the wine to feel fuller and more complicated. (505 views)
Tasted by Eoisa on 4/28/2022 & rated 94 points: Tasted at 12C(~54F). No aeration or decanting.

Appearance:
Pale and rose colored, a stunning pink-orange color reminiscent of copper wiring.

Nose:
Buckle up. This wine has primary aromas of yuzu, grapefruit, fresh apple, ripe watermelon, and red fruits like strawberry and cherry. The aromas are strong enough to be easily distinguishable, but not so strong as to overwhelm the senses; Bonny Doon is making a lot of promises here, I'm curious if she can deliver.

Palate:
This vin gris is dry, low in acidity and tannins, and surprisingly full bodied. The alcohol content is middling, but this wine is so velvety on the tongue that it really isn't noticeable at all. The flavor is intense and pronounced, with primary notes of fresh, sweet strawberries and raspberries taking center stage, followed by peach, pear, and grapefruit. There are secondary notes of lees, but it is fleeting at best. The finish is long and joyous.

Overall, this wine is surprisingly complex, silky, and playful. I expected to taste this California grown grenache based rosé and shrug my shoulders, but what came out of the bottle truly surprised and delighted me; I'm thankful to have a couple more bottles in my cellar. This wine is drinking wonderfully right now, and should probably be drank sooner than later, as age won't do her more justice. (563 views)
Tasted by Mauest on 4/7/2022 & rated 85 points: Robust for a rose, reflects a complexity surprising for a rose. Nice flowery nose and smooth finish. More interesting as it warmed up from cellar temp, drink it now. I like this wine. (571 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/9/2022: Smells like good rose. Fresh strawberry, lively. Maybe just a touch of burnt rubber to it? Could just be me. A little bit fatter and fuller on the palate. (705 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 10/17/2021 & rated 88 points: This is very well done and oh so French. Strawberry and pastis nose with just that hint of herbaceous bitterness extending to the palate. A nice dense glycerol weight carries things along with a fresh, clean finish to round things off. Nothing particularly Californian about, but it delivers for the price. (733 views)
Tasted by mpricher on 10/3/2021 & rated 87 points: Mmm.. good? It’s got nice pink melon color. Nice mouthfeel, but a little bitter tart fit my taste (676 views)
Tasted by Likawine on 8/1/2021 & rated 89 points: Watermelon, strawberries, wild strawberries, raspberry, peaches,

French vibes (692 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 7/6/2021: Not much on the nose but in a good way. Swirling brings out more. A cleaner more fruit kinda thing going on here. Served super cold. (855 views)
Tasted by Le Gaulois on 6/8/2021 & rated 85 points: Plus sucré que les dernières années, moins mon style, dommage (680 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 5/31/2021 & rated 90 points: The Fifth Annual World's Largest Blind Tasting of American True Rosés: Retail $19. 71% Grenache, 11% Cinsault, 5% Clairette Blanche, 5% Grenache Blanc, 4% Mourvèdre, 4% Vermentino. Medium pink-orange with quite a sweet nose, loaded with peach. Not as inviting initially on the palate, but the fruit really comes in on the finish. I was ready to write this off, but it really recovers.

Tasted by Esteban on 5/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Fruité, rondeur et amertume. Sur un pied d’égalité avec le rosé d’Henri Milan pour le titre de mon rosé de l’été. RQP imbattable. (442 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

Rosé Blend

"Rosé blend" can mean a blend of just about any varietals since the designation comes from the resulting color of the wine.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
