Tasted by vulgar little monkey on 1/26/2024 & rated 94 points: This is showing exactly how I hoped. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot mixed with Howell Mountain and age producers cocoa dusted black cherries and currants. There is a mountain rockiness and dark earth. The tannins are mostly resolved but with a lingering bitter edge to remind you where it comes from. I remember meeting Delia Viader when the 1989 was released and being charmed by both the fine intellect of the person and the wine. I grabbed a 6-pack at an auction last year after not having really followed the wines in ages. I'm glad I did. (349 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 9/5/2021 & rated 93 points: Retail $115(?). 60% Cabernet, 40% Cabernet Franc. When I opened this bottle, I had absolutely no idea who tis wine came into my possession. After I poured a glass for my wife, she informed me that the bottle was sent to us by her uncle--he was moving and thought we might appreciate it. We did. Dark, perhaps really dark, with mostly secondary and tertiary aromas: anise, cigar smoke, blackberry, cassis. Whoa. The palate is perhaps more enticing with subtle fruit, balancing tartness, and just a touch of well-integrated tannins. Lovely.

Tasted by Wine Story on 8/22/2021: Absolutely, phenomenal wine. This cab/cab franc blend is dry with dark fruit on the palate. A beautiful lingering finish. Drink now. (1487 views)
Tasted by Jacksonlane on 8/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Time to drink! (2376 views)
Tasted by vpoms on 3/26/2020 & rated 87 points: Very deep garnet. Pronounced aromas of earth, farmyard, stewed plums, nutmeg, smoke. Wine is fully developed. Palate: dry medium acidity, medium minus tannins. medium alcohol, full body, pronounced flavors of leather, mushrooms, cooked fruit, and earth. Finish is medium minus. Good wine, but well past its prime. Should not be aged any further. Drink up now. (2595 views)
Tasted by Ryanh8 on 3/6/2020: Very good wine. Powerful even with this age. Lots of fruit, both red and black fruit on the nose. Very aromatic wine. Palate confirms the nose, along with just a hint of dark chocolate. At first the wine seems simple, with a big fruit bomb that is very pleasant but straight forward. However, after being open for an hour or so, the fruit transitions into a long, dancing finish that really elevates the wine. Overall a very good wine drinking great now (2450 views)
Tasted by rms7129 on 11/17/2019 & rated 90 points: Maybe we were a little late to the game with this one. Color was a little off and cork was dry. Been in the cellar since we got it. (1854 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 11/1/2019 & rated 92 points: While a little short on the finish with some grainy tannin, this was surprisingly good on the nose and mid-palate. Slightly austere where the Cab Franc is the dominant flavor profile... bitter chocolate, green herb, and touch of menthol. This is almost a clone of Conn Valley Right Bank. Fully mature. Drink up. (1777 views)
Tasted by davergny on 10/10/2019 & rated 91 points: Beautiful dark ruby color and a light but sweet floral nose. Good concentration on the palate, not heavy, dark berry fruit, bell pepper, and savory notes. Seems to be fully mature. Good, but not much complexity or depth. (1298 views)
Tasted by Dalex on 8/26/2019 & rated 91 points: 90 at opening and a 92 5 hours later so I’ll average it. It must be the cab franc that makes this so unique in flavor and personality. Mid-weight wine with great milk chocolate flavors (signature cab franc) and tons of personality. Not a heavy extracted wine. This has real personality (1020 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 3/1/2019 & rated 92 points: Garnet colored, medium bodied, blackberry and black raspberry fruits accented by spice, hints of bacon fat and dark mocha chocolate on a pleasant acidic moderate tannin lingering finish. (1292 views)
Tasted by CRao on 12/16/2018 & rated 96 points: One of the best wines I’ve had. Aged extremely well and perfect time to drink. Tannins really softened with explosive and lingering flavors of a strong Bordeaux blend. Gotta get another bottle of this! (673 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 12/7/2018 & rated 91 points: Ready pretty fast...on the simple side, but very good, and typical Napa. (1392 views)
Tasted by Chef B on 8/2/2018 & rated 93 points: Just phenomenal. Peak drinking. (1772 views)
Tasted by spectrumphoto on 4/9/2017 & rated 93 points: Bit segmented upon open. Give it 30 min and it seamlessly comes together. (3202 views)
Tasted by whybuyone on 11/22/2016: It was disappointing during the first two hours and was then way better after 3 hours. Give it a solid decant. Had a bit of funk upon opening but it all blew off and it turned into a nice bottle of wine. I definitely suggest pairing this one with food. Drink now. (3632 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 11/3/2016 & rated 93 points: Very nice drink right now.......still some dark red fruit and color in the glass, medium weight. Perfectly integrated cab sav and franc, with tannins galore melting away. Still some dark power remaining....might go another 2-3 years if you're lucky. I'd be hard pressed not to drink it now!  Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 1/14/2016 & rated 91 points: MS-style Blinds (6 in 25 minutes) at Californios (Californios SF): Brief notes:
This was killer - well-structured, with herbaceousness that I really enjoyed, and some nice development. Could stand to age for a long time. Score: Around 9.
---------
Full Notes:

Visual

- clear, just bright
- moderate concentration ruby with red at the rim, fading to garnet
- no gas or sediment
- moderate tears

Nose

- clean
- [forgot to note intensity]
- some signs of development
- earth-driven in nature
- fruit - blackcurrant, dried black cherry, dried blackberry
- herbaceousness - notable baked bell pepper, suggesting pyrazines from a Bordeaux varietal
- earth - there’s some baked earth
- [forgot to note florals]
- [forgot to note oak]
- complexity is moderate plus

Palate

- [forgot to note dryness]
- medium plus body
- medium plus alcohol - 14-14.5% (correct - 14%)
- high tannins
- elevated acidity
- echoing the blackcurrant on the nose, but mostly driven by earthiness and a fair dose of herbaceousness
- no signs of brettanomyces
- slight presence of new oak - pretty well integrated though. [forgot to quantify oak]

Initial Conclusions

- cabernet or cab-dominant
- use of new oak takes me to Bordeaux or California.
- Bordeaux blend with some age
- Napa Cab with some age
- alcohol is elevated which suggests Napa
- the intensity of cassis fruit isn’t as much as I’d expect from Napa
- so I think this is from Bordeaux
- Left bank, cab-dominant with merlot
- has some development, and is pretty ripe structurally
- 2010, based on the tannic structure

Final Conclusion

- 2010 Cabernet blend with merlot, Bordeaux, Left Bank, Classified Growth [didn’t specify Medoc, and didn’t specify what level of classified growth]

Actual - 2002 Viader Napa Red Blend - 51% Cab, 49% Cab Franc - Howell Mountain, 14% alcohol. (4930 views)
Tasted by nmoreilly on 12/25/2015 & rated 89 points: Good but the Cab Franc was defiinitely front and center. (733 views)
Tasted by difran on 10/29/2015 & rated 90 points: The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is heavy sediment in the bottle. It smells like black pepper and green olive. It tastes like flint, mineral and red currant. The body is medium/full. The wine has coarse texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity. (4239 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 7/26/2015 & rated 92 points: Noticeably tight at first, but after being open for two hours, became more integrated and balanced. Full bodied, with lots of black fruit notes along with more meaty qualities. The cab franc adds lots of structure at first, but it blends in exceptionally well given enough time open. I was a bit surprised by this bottle, expecting to be at peak and perhaps even on the downside. Instead, it was drinking quite well (given two hours), seemed much longer than it actually is and really delivered on the fruit and structure. (2873 views)
Tasted by rwerner on 3/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Plenty of fruit on the mouth with a long complex finish (765 views)
Tasted by Fernandez Vino on 2/16/2015 & rated 93 points: The wine got progressively better the more we let it breathe. Smelled of cedar. Was also spicy. (854 views)
Tasted by scharlton27 on 9/14/2014 & rated 90 points: Dark and jammy. Plenty of time left for this bottling. (3592 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 8/2/2014: Still youthful and complex. What a great wine. Lots of secondary notes on the nose. Complex on the palette. Drink or hold. Good stuff! (3506 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
