Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SMHalps on 9/15/2023 & rated 93 points: A lost in the cellar bottle that somehow was not on my inventory. This bottle has moved locations 3 times since I bought it, and I was really unsure of what to expect. What I got was near greatness! Elegant, with a long finish. It went great with my sister-in-law's brisket! (300 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 12/29/2018 flawed bottle: Corked...bummer as I cellared this since 2005 and wanted to open in 20 years (close enough tonight). Soon as I sniffed the cork I knew. Was going to bring to a friends house for dinner so good thing I opened and was going to decant before discovering this at the dinner party. (1560 views)
Tasted by doctornoah on 1/29/2018 & rated 92 points: Rich, elegant, black fruited with resolving tannins. A nice new world thing but maybe a bit anonymous. Hard to tell blind what it was, but universally enjoyed. (1968 views)
Tasted by RJ&JJ on 1/4/2015: Anniversary Dinner Wine - few days delayed - from grapes harvested year we were married. (3723 views)
Tasted by mdp.blue on 7/6/2013 & rated 85 points: Decanted seven hours. Earthy. No fruit. Past its prime. Previous 99 was stellar. One more in my cellar of this SLNV vintage. (4860 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 2/8/2013 & rated 95 points: This is just glorious PS at its very best! Potent, vibrant fruit, the tannins are turning to silk! Should wait some years before opening the magnums. This is what PS is all about! (4757 views)
Tasted by mdp.blue on 11/25/2012 & rated 90 points: Decanted five hours this time and the wait delivered benefits. I still believe time is running out on the 1999 but let it breathe and enjoy a wonderful bottle of wine. (4191 views)
Tasted by InflationHedge on 9/10/2012 & rated 92 points: Pop n pour thru Venturi, opened in matter of minutes. A mature petite syrah, dark and dense with a touch of bricking at the edges. Bright red berries and plum, nice structure and weight. Great with steak fajitas! (4460 views)
Tasted by mdp.blue on 7/19/2012 & rated 89 points: Let me offer that one should drink now. Decanted one hour, tried a taste and then waited one more hour. Subtle plum, mellow tannins, chewy with a deep dark purple that's hard to match. I was hoping to space consumption over the next couple of years but will now delete my holdings - as in drink - in 2012. Stags' Leap continues to provide very enjoyable wine drinking pleasure. (2697 views)
Tasted by Taylor56 on 9/23/2011 & rated 90 points: Similar notes from prior bottle. (2294 views)
Tasted by FPNova on 12/25/2010 & rated 90 points: Dense dark purple color all the way out to the rim. Earthy dark ripe red raspberry aroma. Teeth coating chewy texture with flavors of ripe plum, red berries and spice with very nicely mellowed tannins for a long finish. Still a powerful wine but with very well rounded edges at this point in its life cycle. (2386 views)
Tasted by JBD on 9/28/2010 & rated 88 points: Lots of presence (fruit and weight) but not a great or particularly smooth finish. (2432 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 9/6/2009 & rated 91 points: Needs a half hour to come out of its funk, but what follows is a plummy, rich wine with medium concentration and finish. Continues to grow for a while in the glass, with hints of red fruits. Nice. (2725 views)
Tasted by Taylor56 on 5/15/2009 & rated 89 points: Decanted one hour. Holding up quite nicely for a ten year old wine. Good structure and acid to fruit ratio. Just a slight fade on the dark fruit in the mid-palate. Retaining a beautiful inky color with no noticeable bricking. Tannins have softened and the wine has a medium finish. Drink. (2990 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 12/27/2008 & rated 93 points: This bottle had no VA, was a beautifully balanced example of mature petite syrah. Brooding darkest red color with garnet rim, nose of blackberries, black currants, briar, and mint in equal proportion. Light on the palate for PS, the balance of this bottle was perfect. After a bit of air, a touch of tea leaf came into play, with still a few tannins left. (2917 views)
Tasted by Chidainey on 12/27/2008 & rated 81 points: Burgundy & other stuff from the cellar (The house): Big woody nose. Sweetish, thin tannic fruit with a thin and shrill finish. I certainly aged this one too long. (3818 views)
Tasted by rmodak on 12/7/2008 & rated 89 points: This wine began with some stinky barnyard notes that diminished with air. Loads of black cherry, meat, herbs and earthy notes meld in a complex, fully mature wine, that is almost Bordeaux like in its flavor profile and complexity. A slightly chunky texture prevents this from scoring higher. (2926 views)
Tasted by Chidainey on 10/27/2008 & rated 88 points: Pulled from Vinotemp, let warm to 65F & popped & poured into Riedel Bordeaux glasses. Big aromatic black nose, briar & wood and little spirity.Medium weight fruit. Clean with some complexity. Slightly tart black brambly fruit. Nice, somewhat drying slightly tannic finish of decent length and complexity. Smooth but persistent tannins. A food wine - went well with red wine & garlic marinated lamb. Didn't seem like it had enough fruit to go with the remaining tannins and may have been ever so slightly over the hill. (2910 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 10/3/2008 & rated 87 points: Volatile acidity seems to be picking up in this wine, so I'm drinking the rest soon. (2907 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 3/16/2008: One of my older reds from my young cellar. Tasted after the 1997 Harlan and actually IMO, it performed better. At 8 years old, still lively and well complemented for food, as the heavy tannin and big fruit from previous showings are now moving toward showing some faint whiffs of some secondary characteristics, much like an older Ridge. I'm going to seek out another few more and re-add this back to the cellar to allow another 5 years to lay on the wine. (3321 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 1/31/2008 & rated 92 points: What a stunner. Touch of sweet pickle relish volatile acidity on the nose, which blew off, to give way to black bing cherries, tar, tea, oak and vanilla with high toned cassis and blackberries on the nose. Black ripe bing cherries on the palate, full and lush, with a tea finish. What an amazing wine. I do think it is time to drink up, though. (3219 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 11/7/2007 & rated 91 points: Becoming really nice, more balanced with time. Really needed 2 hours in the decanter to get going...These last an amazing time. Tar, meat, raspberry, cassis, some oak. (3261 views)
Tasted by Olch on 8/5/2007 & rated 88 points: time to drink (3707 views)
Tasted by TCT on 12/6/2006 & rated 89 points: Still not up to other vintages. Fruit has dropped off significantly for a relative young petite. (3503 views)
Tasted by SonomaFan on 12/2/2006: Had this side by side with my last 98, but this wine isn't ready yet. Very earthy. Tried to open up a bit, but just leave it down for a few more years. (3610 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
