Tasted by jjones on 3/28/2024 & rated 90 points: I don't know how to think about this wine, as the Cab Sauv/Syrah combo doesn't fit any standard blends that allow me to consider typicity. I last had the wine about 15 years ago, when it was so overwhelmed with tannins that it needed days to be tamed enough to drink. Now, it has shed that harshness, leaving a beautiful entry of smoke and dark cherries. There is a bit of volatile acidity which seems to function more as spice than fault. The wine was a joy to drink, changing over about two hours. About the only negative comment was the finish, which was a bit abrupt and short. (258 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 11/18/2023 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby. A touch of volatility on the nose. Similar to a bottle a couple of years ago, more impressive than loveable. Blackcurrant with a southern herbal shroud. The VA just a little too pronounced and lending a Musaresque lift that doesn’t suite this particular bottle. Still excellent wine, but frustratingly it could and should have been a little better. ***1/2 (810 views)
Tasted by ankitmehra on 5/23/2023 & rated 94 points: The 1998 Domaine de Trévallon was a marvel. A blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, the bottle, in its maturity, represented the perfect blend of both grapes. With a distinctly smokey, Syrah nose the palette shifted to what we believed exuded the confidence of a late 1980s left bank Bordeaux (with a bit more of an oomph). Comprised of red cherries, cedar, graphite and leather, the palette was silky, aided by the softened tannins. (1172 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/12/2023: ESTG does Southern Rhone and Provence (Seattle, WA, USA): Soaring violet, garrigue, piercing acidity, dusty. Quite stunning. (1916 views)
Tasted by eboracum on 12/25/2022 & rated 90 points: I was less thrilled by this bottle than by the previous. The bouquet on the nose was well up to standard combining freshness with a rich underlying Mediterranean roundness but the palate seemed harder and structured in a more angular way than I recall and noted with the previous bottles. Bottle variation or jaded palate? Or maybe the Christmas capon was too light for its forceful personality and with hindsight decanting might have been beneficial. Very good but not excellent as before. (1390 views)
Tasted by François1986 on 9/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Robe d'intensité moyenne + rubis et tend doucement vers Vermillon,

Nez: Bouquet ouvert assez sauvage d'épice, fruit noir, poivron rouge, garrigue, léger sous-bois.

Bouche idem que précédemment : Bonne fraîcheur, alcool modéré -, taninsont assimilés et longueur moyenne +, au final très harmonieux. (1648 views)
Tasted by Fausto_Coppi on 3/20/2022 & rated 98 points: Deep, rich, cherry red colour. Bouquet of dried herbs and pine forest. Palate is a lovely mix of matured red fruit with ripe strawberries and sun dried tomatoes with the addition of oregano and sage. The acidity and tannins are fully mature and the finish is soft and elegant. This is a great wine. (1664 views)
Tasted by Trevallon on 2/20/2022 & rated 94 points: Needed a 4 hour decant to come into its own. (1501 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 11/20/2021 & rated 91 points: A powerful but restrained Trev, the two components in balance with neither being dominanot, but maybe initially the Cab just a little to the fore with what appears to be quite a deep blackcurrant core. After a couple of hours the Syrah shows more and the combination shows more glycerol and a touch of the south without ever losing its Cabernet frame. Restrained power remains the key here, it’s a little buttoned up and self conscious. Still quite grippy, this cries out for food. Impressive rather than loveable. **** (1752 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 10/21/2021: An excellent bottle. Earthy with just enough enduring fruit. It remains impressively structured despite mostly resolved tannins. It has ample energy and verve, which enabled it to pair well with a variety of dishes. (1595 views)
Tasted by dream on 7/19/2021 flawed bottle: corked (2043 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/14/2021 & rated 90 points: Some dried fruit on the nose with a light whiff of pyrazines and peppercorns. A touch of dried herbs and leather round out the nose. The nose shows a more distinct cabernet component than syrah with the pyrazine qualities, but the spicy elements do pop up on the back end. Fully mature for my palate. (3039 views)
Tasted by DBdeParis on 1/25/2021: A beautiful bottle (from a cool cellar) that is holding together nicely. Decanted off the significant sediment typical of older Trévallons. From the start has a classic Trévallon nose and balanced flavors & structure. At this point the components of Syrah and Cabernet have fused into something unique. Given the softened tannins this seems to be very much in its "enjoy now" stage of maturity. (2170 views)
Tasted by BVW3 on 9/11/2020 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 90 minutes. Lots of sediment left in the bottle. Very nice old wine. Soft smooth cabernet paired with spicy Syrah. Soft mouth-filled tannins and gentle fruit paired nicely with a seared filet. I would search this out but I'm happy that I still have a couple more bottles. A fun wine. (2205 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 7/12/2020: I wasn’t a huge fan of this. It had neither the palate depth depth of Bordeaux nor the perfume of cooler climate parts of the Rhône. A bit mediocre (2294 views)
Tasted by Papies on 5/2/2020 flawed bottle: Corked. Painful. (2444 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 4/16/2020 & rated 88 points: After a little barnyard funk blew off, the wine began to open nicely with earthy notes of dried raisins and currents on the nose and palate. Medium bodied and not particularly powerful at this point in its development. The tannins were totally integrated and the wine was balanced and smooth. While the group liked the wine, several of the tasters said the ripe grape sugars remained too prominent and felt it lacked grip and finished sweet. An interesting Cab/Syrah blend from France. (2123 views)
Tasted by jvphoto on 12/19/2019 & rated 89 points: Smelled a little rubbery with earthy aromas dominating very little fruit. Decent acidity but faded tannins. Blood orange, sour red fruit, mushrooms, berry jelly. (2140 views)
Tasted by François1986 on 7/8/2019 & rated 92 points: Quel plaisir ! Après 21 ans, une fraîcheur et une bouquet splendide !

Même commentaires positifs que la bouteille dégustée en avril.

Parfaite à boire et peut encore attendre 5 ans (2284 views)
Tasted by François1986 on 4/26/2019 & rated 92 points: Visuel : Intensité moyenne +, Rubis et tend doucement vers Vermillon, viscosité grasses.

(2304 views)
Tasted by eboracum on 4/12/2019 & rated 93 points: This followed the deep and dark Peyre Rose, so I was mainly tuned into contrast. This was somewhat lighter in body though still quite powerful. Its fruit was a lot brighter with minerals and acidity more marked. The 50% of Cabernet Sauvignon gave this a much more Bordelais character and greater elegance without sacrificing some generosity conferred by the Syrah. Excellent. (2098 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 1/18/2019: Far and away my best bottle, sad it is my last. Pop and pour. On the nose, a stunning mix of garrigue, herbs, blueberry and blackberry, wild strawberry...wow. On the palate, excellent acidity, good richness with more herbs and spice, some sweet red fruit...soft attenuated tannin on the finish. A fitting final bottle. (2259 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 5/27/2018: Quite similar showing to a previous btl from the same batch. On the nose, a hint of cab based vegetal and charcoal notes, with strawberry and gamey notes in the background. On the palate, ok acidity and more strawberry and spice. Tannin completely attenuated on the slightly spicy finish. (3071 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 3/17/2018 & rated 95 points: Wow, cedar wood, very roasted meat, cèpes de Bordeaux... Very fresh taste, silky tannin, sappy acidity, sappy red cherries (3243 views)
Tasted by Papies on 2/13/2018 & rated 92 points: A good 5 years since we had this last ( Papies 91) and definitely has improved and shows it has the legs to go for another 10 years.
Definitely aided by the 98 vintage ( vs other 90s vintages we have tried) , is darker, richer and with a lot more pronounced fruit across the profile. lovely smoky nose, very much the textbook Trevallon red, light leather twist too. Very enjoyable now and with good life ahead. 92-93 and look out for it.

Trevallon reds for us , usually classic Bordeaux lovers of 80s and 90s, represent a great value for good quality drinking and definitely an undervalued wine compared to the equivalent wines from BDX. 90s vintages drink superbly well now. Beautiful, well made, unpretentious & pure wines . (2992 views)

Rockss and Fruit (3/29/2006)
(Domainde de Trevallon) This was another somewhat beastly animal-like wine. Again some serious barnard and bretty aromas out of the gate but with some air some complex spices and dark fruits emerged. Palate was like a semi-mature Bordeaux. Classically structured with great concentration and a wonderful velvety finesse. The fruit is pretty explosive and the delineation is damn near perfect. This is alot more open than when I had it 3 years ago. A great vintage for Trevallon and as good if not better than the '89 . . . which is damn good.

Rockss and Fruit (2/29/2004)
(Domaine de Trevallon) Somewhat cloudy but that did not seem to affect the wine. Soaring nose of leather, blueberry, tar, bacon fat, light cocoa, mint smoke, cherry, wet earth and mineral. Real beautiful minerality and nuance on the stunning nose. Palate lives up to the promise of the nose. Sweet fruit and tannin along with lively acidity. Really lush and velvety mouthfeel with an incredibly long finish. Lots of complex minerality at the backend. This could use maybe a couple more years to smooth out the tannins but this is glorious now.

Domaine de Trévallon

Producer Website
Up until 1993 the Trevallon Rouge was Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, Les Baux. However, starting in 1994 this was 'declassified' when the AOC Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence was revised (in 1993) and the maximum amount of Cabernet Sauvignon was reduced to a measly 20% (it was to be complemented with Grenache). Eloï Dürrbach did not want to give in and decided to market his wines under the Vin de Pays des Bouches-du-Rhône.

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.
