Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JBVino on 3/22/2016: At 20 completely integrated and seamless, past its best but still providing pleasure as partner to a meal. Unfortunately so seamless that lacks texture on the palate or any significant secondary flavors to provide complexity. Nonetheless solid with decent length and structure. (2013 views)
Tasted by magic2coop on 12/29/2014 & rated 90 points: Color has lightened. Fruit is muted with a little earth and giving way to light cinnamon and sandalwood. Drink up. (2355 views)
Tasted by McKraftyWino on 8/28/2014 & rated 98 points: superb. fresh. lovely.
amazing presentation. (2553 views)
Tasted by Monaco on 7/12/2014 flawed bottle: Corked. Cork was split and cracked in half. Tasted like fruit stew (2541 views)
Tasted by FLI on 9/23/2013 flawed bottle: Corked. Fruit gone. A real disappointment. Earlier bottles were sublime. (2845 views)
Tasted by MJD Cellar on 8/24/2013 & rated 89 points: A bit past its best days? (1475 views)
Tasted by brooklynJ&O on 10/29/2012 & rated 81 points: not my favorite. Had a little stewed fruit flavor to it. better with food. J liked it more than I did. (1239 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 10/29/2012 & rated 87 points: Liked it a lot more than those Bklyn Heights folks. A tad sweet but still nice tannins and a beautiful cork after 16 years. Comparable: Austin Jackson. (1430 views)
Tasted by vzang on 12/4/2010 & rated 93 points: Nothin' like old wine! This '96 drank beautifully last night at a party - after about 45 mins of decanting. Nose has faded appreciably but the flavors are excellent. While clearly on the back nine, this old beauty still brings it. Muted but gorgeous flavors of spice, flint and tar box. Soft and medium length finish. Wish I had more in the cellar! (2040 views)
Tasted by Bluffan on 11/26/2010 & rated 92 points: Lovely, rich, almost glycerin-like smoothness. A very nice bottle indeed. (1706 views)
Tasted by FPNova on 6/20/2010 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby red color all the way to the edge; no hint of any oxidation. Blueberry dominates the nose with hints of spice and cinnamon. Blackberry, red currant and blueberry flavor with earthy tobacco, spice and a hint of licorice. Nicely rounded tannins are still firm for a nice long finish. Great with a father's day steak off the BBQ. (1893 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 2/15/2009 & rated 90 points: nose - blackberry, black tea, hint of oak. improved with aeration. mouth - mid bodied red and dark fruits, ready to drink, moderate tannins. (2071 views)
Tasted by JJG1961 on 9/29/2008 & rated 91 points: Plenty of fruity tastes for this blend; especially blackberries and cherries. Not awfully velvety but quite nice aftertaste. (2028 views)
Tasted by Brett on 5/27/2007 & rated 93 points: Outstanding bottle of wine. Well balanced with fantastic fruit. (2212 views)
Tasted by Deryl on 3/11/2007 & rated 90 points: I bought this for $65 in fall 06. We just taste compared it to a 96 Sociando that I acquired around the same time for $48. While the Pine Ridge was very nice indeed, and if we had only had that bottle we would have been singing its praises, we all liked the Sociando a little better. (2241 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 2/17/2007 & rated 91 points: Ah-h all the classic Bordeaux notes, earth, leather, dark berries in a California blend minus the terroir of France. While my wife and I enjoyed this bottle very much a 2000 Bordeaux at 1/4 the price had a much better nose and expression of the terroir of Bordeaux. The facsinating things about wine are the expression of where the grapes are grown. (2311 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
