Tasted by @yourfavoritewino on 4/20/2024: Delicious! Had to buy 2 more! (278 views)
Tasted by WindFlyer on 4/5/2024 & rated 87 points: purplish dark ruby and with medium body. a bit of cinnamon and allspice dance around the red berry fruit notes. fresh, dry, and structured in the mouth, pepper and earthy notes run through (and perhaps over) the raspberry and cherry fruit. medium persistence with a bit of dryness.

not particularly thrilling at the moment… and not sure whether more time will be its friend.

14.4% AbV; blend of 65% Grenache/ 18% Syrah/ 15% Cinsault/ 2% Petite Sirah; Grenache and Cinsault were co-fermented. (302 views)
Tasted by Dj6544 on 3/24/2024 & rated 90 points: Everything is in good balance here, with a light raspberry, peppery and just ever so slightly smokey note. High acidity and a sharp, refined palate that is much more restrained than the CnDP homage I thought it would be. A very correct wine. (361 views)
Tasted by Hildo Schulz on 3/3/2024 & rated 86 points: Needs some air to mellow out the though tannins. Quite powerful with lots of dark berries and spices such as white pepper. Somewhat one dimensional and not that complex. Ma nice wine that a will drink again. (444 views)
Tasted by ElAzul on 3/3/2024 & rated 88 points: Solid offering again from Rhone Ranger Bonny Doon. Plenty of bright raspberry fruit as well as some red cherry. And nice acidic backbone to keep it vibrant. Excellent with a variety of food. And it was actually much more fun after 48 hours open with the fruit being well lifted up by the soft tannin. (430 views)
Tasted by Kork-Dork on 2/29/2024 & rated 84 points: 👃 Artificial cherry (like those fake cherries made from paper pulp back in the day), salmiak (ammonium chloride) and almond.

👅 Medium- to full-bodied (ABV 14.5%) with firm tannin structure, lively acidity (medium +), ammonium chloride on the palate and on the short- to medium finish.

📝 Medium intensity. Ammonium Chloride is the lasting impression. For us Scandinavians who grew up with salty licorice candy, the aroma is fairly easy to identify.

Bonny Doon is the wine legend Randall Grahm’s winery. (232 views)
Tasted by mec.folkesson@gmail.com on 2/1/2024 & rated 82 points: Some pepper, oak, forest raspberry, bay leaf and dark cherry. Easy to drink. A bit to easy & sweet for my taste. Short end. Bought at the Swedish liquor shop (Systembolaget) at the temporary assortment for 21,3 $.
Love the label!! So funny! Tried it with two different cheeses, italian parmesan and swedish prästost (priest´s cheese?) The wine disappeared, as well as the cheeses. Recommendation says foodpairing with lamb and beef but I´m doubtful. Drink it as it is without anything. (460 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 1/18/2024: Tastes ever more fake to me. Soft strawberry fruit through the mid palate, tight and taught. (698 views)
Tasted by mmiller94 on 1/14/2024 & rated 89 points: Wow, what a fresh & fun wine. Admittedly, there’s not much in the way of serious complexity, but the bright raspberry, red plum, and cherry notes are hard to resist. Black pepper and garrigue add some complexity, and the tannin structure is a tad rustic, probably thanks to the Carignan in the blend. (462 views)
Tasted by HenrikJ on 1/5/2024 & rated 87 points: Aerated for 3 hours. Fairly light colour. Decent aromatics, very oaky, herbal, some juicy blue and red berries, peppers and aniseed. Medium-full bodied palate, juicy, decent balance with good acidity. Not really overripe, but a slight raisiny hint coming in on the finish. This is a crowd pleaser for sure, but still a rather serious wine. (413 views)
Tasted by sfcrushaz on 12/28/2023: Have not had this wine in years. This vintage was a nice, easy drinking light/medium body wine that was a crowd pleaser paired with ribs. Liked the wine enthusiast notes & at the price it’s a worth a try or 2. Cheers (450 views)
Tasted by danme on 12/23/2023 & rated 88 points: Purplish red. Much berries, herbs, licorice. A good California twist of a southern Rhône. Food friendly. (381 views)
Tasted by Mr Jupiter on 12/15/2023 & rated 86 points: Ok men inte värd priset. (330 views)
Tasted by Teknsteel on 12/14/2023 & rated 89 points: This wine has always had two things going for it, the name and the bottle art. Things that make me buy a bottle every few years. This here vintage is a fine Cali Côtes du Rhône. Food friendly. (346 views)
Tasted by Ozric on 12/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Nose: Somewhat green with a hint of mineral and some alcohol. Dusty berries and licorice.

Palate: Good acid on the entry, with generous fruit notes of blueberries and raspberries. Mid-palate also has licorice and is quite dry. Short aftertaste. (265 views)
Tasted by ggtirevite on 6/24/2023: To Jackie (592 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 4/8/2023 & rated 89 points: Day 1: This is so much better than the 2020 Bedrock Syrah California I opened earlier and it is half the price. While this is not a polarizing wine it offers great value at $12.00. Floral, pepper, plum, berries and mild spice. A simple wine but pleasing nonetheless. 88 points
Day 2: This is a bit better. More floral notes emerging. Rose petals, dried leaves, plum, cherry, black pepper and spice. Medium finish and flavorful. This would be a good gateway wine to those that like wines like Orin Swift and the Prisoner at a fraction of the price. While it offers that touch of sweetness it still has nice acidity overall. 89 points
Recommendation: This is a good everyday drinker. For $12 a great value. (834 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 4/1/2023 & rated 88 points: Haskell's Grand Tasting (Bloomington, MN): Low expectations but they were exceeded. This is not bad and only $12.99 no a days. Rustic, spice, lighter fruits and floral notes. Never been a big fan of the wines but when it is this cheap and drinkable worth the money. (952 views)
Tasted by Yonny on 12/17/2022 & rated 89 points: I think This is the best le cigare volant over the last several years (1023 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
