| Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by vindictive on 11/29/2019: bottle and fill excellent, cork was crumbling, but intact. A bit dull in color, but brightening with air. A little smoke, mushrooms and forest, autumnal now - a good if not great, aged wine that has held up well but needs drinking (1291 views) | | Tasted by hjerman on 11/6/2018 & rated 90 points: Pretty remarkable for a 51 year old wine that was fairly inexpensive at the time (I remember this wine when young). Well stored, good color, and fairly full in the mouth, with some ripe-plum notes. However, don't expect miracles. It held up OK for more than an hour until the group finished the bottle, but really, it is time to drink it up. (1473 views) | | Tasted by andtheodor on 10/20/2017: Good fill and cork. Nose is lovely; autumnal with wisps of smoke, cedar, brown sugar. Palate still has a tiny bit of fruity plum sweetness but less interest than the nose. Didn't change much over the course of a few hours. (2455 views) | | Tasted by hackey37 on 5/19/2017 & rated 86 points: Color is autumn brown and yellow, good clarity and translucent. Smells are brown sugar, iodine, bell pepper, cinnamon, and band aid. The tastes are tea, syrup, leather, sour cherry, and orange zest. Tannins are resolved and the finish is herbal and sour. (2511 views) | | Tasted by RedLoverJim on 1/15/2017 & rated 91 points: The '67 CK was clearly an older Napa Cab, but after about 20 minutes it was very good. Not quite up to the '67 BV, but close. It was enjoyable for a good hour once it hit the sweet spot, with some solid dried fruits, and the expected cedar, spice and tobacco notes you'd expect. I was very pleased with how it had held up and happy to have two more bottles waiting to be enjoyed! (2783 views) | | Tasted by soyhead on 7/29/2016 flawed bottle: smelling like prunes, this wine was interesting to try but was essentially dead on arrival. (2062 views) | | Tasted by rsbeck on 10/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Cork was saturated and came out in pieces, but the wine showed no evidence of advanced oxidation. Surprisingly ripe, sweet and fruity given its age. No evidence of oak though the label says it was "aged in 55 gallon barrels." Tannin completely resolved, color is lovely ruby/garnet. Evolved quickly in the glass revealing a light/medium bodied wine whose various flavor components have melded together so seamlessly, it is impossible to separate them out individually. After 60 minutes or so, it began to fade, but it was fun to track and fascinating to ponder. Strangely enough this had a stelvin style screw cap, but the bottle was not threaded and the bottle also contained a cork. (something interesting) there was some talk as to whether this was a Mondavi wine, as R.M's first vintage was a 68 Fume blanc. Anyway...the wine itself faded quickly upon opening. not cloudy, but extremely bricked and pale. nose was madeirized, but yet approachable. the palate was thin, not a touch of Oak (Redwood barrels back then??) anyway, the fruit was there, this was drinkable and better than expected by all in attendance. | Charles Krug Winery (Peter Mondavi Family) Producer websiteCabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
