| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 158 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Les Raisins Du Aron on 11/20/2022 & rated 94 points: Where can I start. This Pinot was incredible, especially considering its age. There were solid fruit flavors that were probably faded from an earlier date, but who cares, this tasted very Pinot-like in a good way. Dark color and super smooth. (702 views) | | Tasted by Nothung on 5/31/2021 & rated 91 points: Past it’s peak, but still drinking really well. (1495 views) | | Tasted by dfcrutcher on 12/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Drinking nicely. No visible sign of ageing. Fairly light in weight with nice cherry notes. (1601 views) | | Tasted by rwerner on 3/23/2020 & rated 92 points: Still tasting well. Classic rich pinot flavors with long finish. No brown edges indicating advanced age. (1808 views) | | Tasted by JCaress on 12/18/2018 & rated 92 points: Nice cherry and tart berry. Drinking well with a porchette. (2253 views) | | Tasted by wiscgrad on 5/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Similar to others recent notes. No signs of fading. A bit of heat on the back end. Otherwise really nice RRV PN (2232 views) | | Tasted by Pinot1313 on 5/6/2017 & rated 92 points: REBUY - YES, had with Salmon. Great aromas of rich cherries, Nice earthy flavors, good body, nice finish. Very enjoyable (2702 views) | | Tasted by wineismylife on 1/27/2017 & rated 92 points: WIML92
Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about two hours.
Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of birch, raspberries and cherries. Flavors of berries, cherries and plums. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink now. (3100 views) | | Tasted by camben on 7/17/2016: Quite funky upon opening; first hour or so Comes together nicely with raspberry nectar, strawberry, white fig, dust, wet bark (3268 views) | | Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 5/4/2016 & rated 89 points: Another cali-noir, another winner? This one is a little older, a little more restrained than the Evening Land but in the same juicy sweet style with a lighter, more deft touch. I like the Red Car better but this bottle disappeared just as quickly.......
Since this bottle was a gift, the PQR was great! (3262 views) | | Tasted by drwinenut on 3/4/2016 & rated 95 points: WOW! Amazing flavors, integrated, layers of stuff. Tannins have softened nicely, without giving up the backbone. No cherry/berry soda pop flavors on this one. Spectacular! (3100 views) | | Tasted by LoireFan on 12/3/2015 & rated 78 points: For those who enjoy syrupy pinot noir, this is your wine. (Purchased direct on release and very, very disappointed.) (2645 views) | | Tasted by tomlee on 8/2/2015 & rated 94 points: Light red in color. Almost translucent. Inviting on the nose with scents of dark fruits, earth, fresh mushrooms and baking spices. Medium body with tremendous acidity. Super texture and mouth feel. Flavors of black cherry, nutmeg, cloves and anise. The finish is tremendous. This wine is remarkably still improving in bottle. Better than either of the bottles I had in 2013 and 2014. Although this was my last bottle I think this will drink well for another 2-3 years. This clearly bodes well for the single vineyard designates from 2006. (2779 views) | | Tasted by rralls on 7/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Very nice given age. Was a little worried but was pleasantly surprised how well this showed. (2160 views) | | Tasted by JBVino on 6/3/2015: solid understated pinot. decent length, solid texture and secondary flavors, lacked a bit of presence and performs better accompanying a meal. (2048 views) | | Tasted by Anthony Lombardi on 3/19/2015 & rated 90 points: Gave this around 45 min of air before serving. Dark garnet color. Classic RRV nose showing bing cherry, black tea & cola. Concentrated dark red fruit. Moderate acid & supple tannins. Very fruit forward, but clean & fresh. Easy to enjoy, not overly complex. (2278 views) | | Tasted by marka on 2/25/2015 & rated 89 points: Notes of RC Cola. Pleasant for during the week, but not to my liking these days. Good fruit, RC Cola, pleasant nose of red fruit and earth. (1883 views) | | Tasted by filstan on 1/26/2015 & rated 92 points: This wine is still very vibrant. Enough acidity to compliment the fruit. The depth of the finish is amazing. A hint of some spice in the nose. I have been tasting through RRV 2006-2007's Pinot Noir in my cellar and this one really stood out. Pity it was last bottle from what was once a case. This wine could still benefit with some more age. Impressive to say the least. (1944 views) | | Tasted by glapuyade on 1/24/2015 & rated 93 points: Surprisingly young fresh and vibrant, tart cranberry, red cherry and red raspberry dominated the palate with touches of the vanilla and cola to compliment. A beautiful Russian River Pinot in the typical Russian River style. (1803 views) | | Tasted by marka on 1/19/2015 & rated 90 points: Nice almost 10 year old PN. Dark cherries, mellow fruit, nice soft nose, and well-balanced. Paired well with Salmon. Drink up as this won't get any better. If anything, it is on the decline. (1709 views) | | Tasted by rwerner on 7/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Classic pinot. Nice nose and lots of fruit in the middle with a long finish. Black cherry and soft tannins. (2348 views) | | Tasted by wineismylife on 1/3/2014 & rated 92 points: WIML92
Tasted non blind at a wine tasting.
Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of potpourri, acacia, pepper, black berries and black cherries. Flavors of black berries, Bing cherries and black raspberries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. (3296 views) | | Tasted by hackey37 on 12/29/2013 & rated 94 points: The color is beatiful clear ruby and garnet and is translucent. The smells are sweet exotic spices, red licorice, strawberry, olive and sweet cherry. The tastes are cherries, sassafras, black pepper, and earthy notes. The finish is lengthy and so flavorful. The tannins are soft satin and the fruit really comes through on this beautiful wine. (2828 views) | | Tasted by tcdonovan on 9/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Yeah (3385 views) | | Tasted by cns on 8/3/2013 & rated 94 points: This is an absolutely fantastic wine. My palate favors wines that are right down the middle between old-world and new-world and this wine delivers. Beautiful fruit, but not jammy or perfum-y at all. Very pretty nose with wonderful fruit flavors. Medium-long finish and great structure. This wine is drinking absolutely wonderfully right now!!! This exceptional Estate Pinot Noir was produced from grapes that were specially selected from several of our vineyards. The blend consists of 75% Sweetwater Vineyard and 25% from distinguished sites on our property. A concentrated ripe fruit taste of black cherry and spice combine with a nose of jam, earth, and hints of vanilla, to create this classic Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. This wine was aged in French oak for 15 months. 3580 cases were produced.Pinot Noir Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia) Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.
Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.
Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.
The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina". Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins. The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.
Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled. In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.
In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.
With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.
Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting. Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy. Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid. As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries. A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced. In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid. If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyRussian River Valley Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia |
