Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Enfantterrible on 5/16/2021 & rated 90 points: P&P. Very classy for St Joseph. Fine, brassy, if perhaps straying a bit from terroir. Prolly near its peak (867 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 8/20/2018 & rated 89 points: Not sure what was up with this bottle. Perhaps it needed a decant or bigger glasses. It never really filled out over the course of an hour. Good but thin (1473 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 6/10/2016: Nose - rather closed even with a few hours of air. Asphalt.
Mouth - this wine slowly is opening with time, and has an attractive savory berry quality. Sadly I think I'm drinking it too early. Overall it's very pure and minerally, with an attractive licorice fruit component that is quite muted. Try again tomorrow (2983 views)
Tasted by M DU VIN on 1/5/2014 & rated 90 points: A big wine that is almost black in color -- but one dimensional at this stage of its development. To try again in 3 or 4 years. (4427 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 7/22/2012 & rated 90 points: excellent. but needs another 3 years at least (5286 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/19/2011 & rated 88 points: Saturday Wine Lunch Group: '09 Beaujolais, Burgs (Lucques Restaurant, Los Angeles, California): Opaque red violet color; reduction, roasted black fruit, tar nose; tight, tart black fruit, charcoal, tar, roasted black fruit palate, needs 2-plus years; medium-plus finish (1898 views)
Tasted by wine_tracker on 9/25/2010 & rated 92 points: Delicious, with oak, peppers and chocolate notes... very aromatic but still a baby. (5706 views)
Tasted by thomasito2001 on 3/28/2010 & rated 85 points: I didn't get anything, this wine was big and dark but absolutely not talking. Should have decanted it for half a week, but obviously didn't. Oh well... (5214 views)
Tasted by austinwinesalon on 3/25/2010 & rated 90 points: Definitive Rhone (Fabi and Rosi European Kitchen Austin, Texas): [Decanted three hours before tasting] Surprisingly approachable, several tasters thought this wine new world-ish (until they tasted the wine from Washington), reminiscent of a rhone ranger rather than Australian. Quite a dense wine, with dark color, the wine had a fruity, succulent nose, and aggressive tannins. A young, expressive food wine, this was "rock solid" and "a baby," yet had much flavor. Blackberry, black currant, raisin, dark fruit and black raspberry, with some white pepper, oak, chalk, thyme, fennel, bitter chocolate, herbs de provence, and stewed fruit notes. It will improve with age, and improved with our charcuterie and lamb. (4942 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 8/31/2009 & rated 88 points: After a 4hr decant and 24hrs in the bottle this was dark, sullen and raw. Back in the cellar for another 24hrs. It opened a little, revealing violets, precise blackberry, iron, coffee grounds and cannabis. Very linear on the palate with herbal tannin, plum skin and ink. The acid level was very elevated bordering on VA. After another 24hrs the structure finally released its grip, presenting a savory, meaty wine of excellent depth and class. This appears to be a 50 year wine and should not be touched for a decade. Lots of upside. (2699 views)
Tasted by last chance on 7/24/2009 & rated 89 points: Washington Wine Tasting w/ Steven Tanzer (Palace Kitchen, Seattle, WA): The nose initially had a fur/animal note to it along with blackberry and smoke aromas. With some swirling in the glass for a couple minutes, it turned to dirty diaper, and any fruit aromas vanished. The palate had currant, tar, and some nice minerality to it. Medium bodied with nice acidity and a good length finish. This would be a good pairing with lamb - if that dirty diaper aroma doesn't keep you from wanting to eat. (2978 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Since 1996, the firm of Delas Frères has fully retrieved the glory and spirit that made its fame. A highly motivated team is proud to help give a new lease of life to this great Rhône Valley wine merchant firm, founded in 1835. Under the guidance of its current management, numerous investments have been made at the winery at Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, near Tournon-sur-Rhône. A specially designed fermentation hall for the making of red wines, and a thorough rebuilding of the ageing cellar are amongst the key elements of the new quality charter from Delas Frères. This can be summed up in one sentence : place man and wine at the centre of the stage, together with terroir.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
