Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 108 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Tym4wine on 11/17/2023 & rated 91 points: Lovely floral aromas. Dark black fruit. Tannins still showing some grip but wonderfully integrated. Perfect acidity.dark fruit with a long finish. Lovely. (241 views)
Tasted by Michael_D on 12/16/2021 & rated 90 points: Still drinking well. No hurry to drink the remaining 05's in the cellar. Solid CabSav. (1053 views)
Tasted by MateusPetrus on 1/22/2021: Undrinkable, not corked or vinegar, just years past its prime.
This was a gift, so no idea how it had been cellared. (1411 views)
Tasted by doug374 on 11/8/2020 & rated 90 points: Deep red, drinking very well expresses rich fruit almost merlot like. (1394 views)
Tasted by colorflavorlocking on 1/4/2020 & rated 80 points: A specter is haunting this glass - the specter of fruit. Really, this wine is on its last legs, but not oxidized like a previous bottle. Dark red with brown rim in glass, aroma of leather, red fruit, and old wooden ship. Some fruit sweetness, some spice, some acidity, and some alcoholic heat on palate. The oak is a bit much though - all bitter chocolate and espresso on finish. What remains is drinkable, but not particularly pleasant. (1758 views)
Tasted by colorflavorlocking on 12/25/2018 & rated 60 points: To me: smells of dead weasel wrapped in gym socks dunked in soy sauce. Very little fruit. To rest of table: "this wine is great, what's wrong with you?" Color of an ancient cru bourgeois, yet only 13 years old. (1545 views)
Tasted by Smiths22 on 8/16/2018 & rated 92 points: At the end of its window but smooth, rich and lovely! (1595 views)
Tasted by JC Cab on 3/12/2017 & rated 91 points: Drinking beautifully. Silky smooth. (2971 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/10/2016: Q3 Tasting - Aged Cali (The Apt): Wine #10: Fairly funny since if this wasn't the youngest of the tasting it was quite close to it and yet I was convinced it was older than its brethren. So much so that that was about all I wrote about it in my notes. (7 pennies) (4067 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 9/10/2016: Q3 - 2016 Tasting - Aged California Wines - Pre 2006 (New York, NY): #10 of 20 wines tasted double blind. Slight bricking in the color. On the palate this has dark fruits playing backup to tertiary characteristics of leather, graphite and earth. Nicely resolved tannins with a medium plus finish. Really in a sweet spot right now. My guess was Cab Sauv from 95-2000 based on the color and the maturity on the palate. This was a top 5 for me. For the group it came in 7th place with 7 pennies voted. (3800 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 7/24/2016 & rated 90 points: Best of the 3 bottles I had by far. Big wine, drinking very young; showed black fruit and solid oak backbone. Smooth despite size, with some depth and a nice finish that brings you back for next sip. (3305 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 5/20/2016 & rated 89 points: Black cherry, mocha, charred wood; initially classic, sweet, minty stags leap flavor profile but then rolled into more of green pepper and heavy oak profile. (3185 views)
Tasted by alohamahalo on 11/19/2015: Classic Pine Ridge, this wine is very alive right now changing rapidly over the course of an hour in the glass. Started with soft tannins and earthy herbal notes (anise? mint/pine? sage?) then moving into sweeter black fruit (plum jam) with a bit of dust. The last sips were turning almost chocolatey. Drink now if you have it! (2500 views)
Tasted by FLI on 6/17/2015 & rated 88 points: Fruit has gotten muted, tannins resolved. A touch of alcohol burn. (2289 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 6/10/2015 & rated 89 points: Fruit has softened, very earthy now. A good wine now but nothing special. Suggest drinking soon if you have still have some, not going to get any better. (2293 views)
Tasted by stevegpg on 5/2/2015 & rated 92 points: Decanted about 90 minutes and drank over an hour or so. Great smokey, woody flavors and aromas. Dark fruit, plumb mostly. Quite mellow. Went well with grilled steak and grilled asparagus. (2300 views)
Tasted by JC Cab on 5/1/2015 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine. Sweet integrated tannins back up spiced dark cherry fruit. Velvety long, seductive finish with a hint of cocoa. A great example of what makes Pine Ridge a stand out Napa property. Drink up! (2195 views)
Tasted by pugblanc on 6/18/2014 & rated 91 points: One of the best stag leap opens for me. Tanins just right. Nice balance. Good cab noise. Dark fruits. Sage. Slight earthiness. (2758 views)
Tasted by pugblanc on 6/16/2014 & rated 88 points: Raspberry and cherry. Dark berry on the noise. Getting earthy. Velvet chocolate cake. (2242 views)
Tasted by pugblanc on 5/26/2014 & rated 90 points: Earthy and mushroom. Dark cherry and plum. Slight hint of chocolate. Tannins gone. Still aome acid. (2244 views)
Tasted by JonGray on 12/31/2013 & rated 89 points: took an hour to open up - and the dusty dark grapes started to brighten. A very well balanced - not too much fruit blend - wine (2751 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 9/29/2012 & rated 93 points: Mature and drinking very well right now. (3860 views)
Tasted by yofog on 9/9/2012 & rated 92 points: This was still very, very young, but showed excellent promise with its classic mocha/mint notes, purity and precision, and solidity. No empty mid-palate or clipped finish here. (3634 views)
Tasted by Black Mikan on 2/14/2012 & rated 88 points: Subdued nose. Very soft palate with modest black currants and light backing of eucalyptus. Rounded tannins on finish. Fruit has become less distinctive than when tasted in 08. I'm thinking jspostles is right on past peak. (4177 views)
Tasted by dontime on 2/3/2012: Opened an hour prior to consumption. Initially was worried - a lot of barnyard funk and a very odd taste (upon opening). Even took a second bottle (something else) to the restaurant in case the Pink Ridge didn't work out. Once at the restaurant, it became a very different wine - much like I remember and so much better. Dark, lush fruit, hint of sweetness. Beautiful. If scoring 90-91. (3941 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
