Tasted by ameyer430 on 3/6/2022 & rated 91 points: Mature right now, but not old. Smooth and rounded with overtones of raisin, smoke, and earth. Good depth. Held up well with wood-fired pizza. (1102 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 6/21/2021 & rated 93 points: Beautifully aged Brunello. Still has some nice fruit of red cherry and strawberry but has really given way to the secondary flavors now of leather, earth, spice, dried flowers, and tobacco notes. Lovely complexity right now with smooth tannins and long finish. Enjoy now and over the next several years. (1601 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 4/24/2021 & rated 93 points: Mature and lovely. I love older aged wines, so this might not be in the wheelhouse of those who would prefer more structure and freshness in their wines. Autumnal notes, licorice, leather and blend together to provide complexity. Soft on the palate with totally resolved tannins. Still good fruit leading to a rather sweet finish. Drink up and enjoy. (1398 views)
Tasted by Gary on 11/6/2018 & rated 90 points: Showing all the signs of age, but lovely and continued to improve as it opened up. (1945 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 4/17/2016 & rated 91 points: From magnum. Nicely evolved in colour with notes of earth, spices, dried red fruit, dried flowers, tobacco. On the palate evolved but there is still grip, good fruit and bright acidity. Lacking a bit of depth and length, but overall pretty impressive. Drink up. 90-92 (3768 views)
Tasted by SimonJohnson on 7/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Double decanted, light colour, rose scented mineral fruit on the nose, relatively complex and heady. Pallete has good acidity and fruit, very enjoyable, hardly tastes 20yrs old. (4216 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 9/22/2013: Color: Ruby with slight bricking at the rim
Smell: Earth, dried red fruits, pipe tobacco, and a hint of cedar with some faint floral notes.
Taste: Dried red fruits, mushrooms, leather, with notes of blue & black fruits at the tail end of the finish.
Overall: Outstanding! This is really showing well for a wine that's almost 20 years old. (4918 views)
Tasted by MJ Moran on 9/22/2013 & rated 90 points: This was an "older wine" I really enjoyed...very soft and smooth with great fruit. (5335 views)
Tasted by DRK III on 9/6/2013 & rated 92 points: Orangey brick. Medium bodied, dusty, wonderful Tuscan red. Very typical. Herbal, leather, strong but not overpowering tanning and a nicely acidic backbone. Decanted for 2 hours. A very good wine. (4275 views)
Tasted by akak on 2/15/2013 & rated 92 points: Our magnum was at its peak. I wouldn't have waited another day. Full of flavor, and up there with some of the best Brunellos. Tasted even better then when we bought in 1997 after a tasting at a wine shop in Volterra, Italy. (3463 views)
Tasted by amflinn on 1/25/2013 & rated 85 points: Past its prime. Brick color. No fresh fruit left. Slightly raisiny. (2886 views)
Tasted by canan on 7/19/2011 & rated 85 points: Used for cooking :-) (3066 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 7/18/2011: Medium to full bodied with pretty much resolved tannins. Popped and poured. The nose and flavors did not open up much. Disappointing. (2852 views)
(3091 views)
Tasted by beej on 11/4/2010 & rated 87 points: Last bottle was proof of this wine's limitations. Opened and recorked in the morning for dinner consumption, the wine showed better than what would have likely been a hurried evolution much like dorothy's twister had it been decanted over dinner.
Purple flowers and fake pancake syrup on the nose and a thin but consistent dark and cherry fruit throughout consumption. Maybe some bark and wood ear undertones but in the end I'm grasping for straws of wet hay.
All gone and that's okay. (2869 views)
Tasted by gmat5497 on 8/3/2010 & rated 90 points: Very nice. (2895 views)
Tasted by bearsfan on 3/26/2010 & rated 90 points: Wanted this to be better than it was so was disappointed. But, was still great BDM characteristic of the vintage and tough to find as it was recently purchased. Good experience of drinking an aged (15 year old) BDM in a place where it should be consumed. Good but great experience (although score indicates that it wasn't top notch for the age / quality). (2826 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 2/24/2010 & rated 90 points: Slow O'd for 10 hours. Transparent brick red and a bit amber at the rim. Muted nose of soft cherry with an earthy and floral (roses?) edge. Pretty seamless from front to back. Tannins and acids are there and balanced. The fruit is a bit subdued. Nice wine with a decent 30 second finish. It would score higher if the fruit were a bit more pronounced. Better with food. (2891 views)
Tasted by Terkel on 6/30/2009 & rated 90 points: Tuesday dinner with friends (Canan's place): Medium red color. Delicate, fine aromas with notes of red cherries and sweet vanilla. Equally delicate on the palate with sweet red cherry fruit, slightly bitter chocolate and leather. A bit of sweet vanilla on the finish, but lacks intensity on the midpalate and finish. Perfect maturity now, with superbly balanced acidity. (3823 views)
Tasted by canan on 6/30/2009: Tuesday night dinner with friends (my place): Perfectly mature now!!
Taste of leather, sweet cherry and overal a very nice balance.
Not a huge wine but drinking nicely now. Does lack a little fullness and it finishes a little short. (3772 views)
Tasted by Lorien on 6/12/2009 & rated 89 points: The one i had in 2005 was a bad bottle as this one was really nice. I liked the wine a lot, and found a solid level of acidity, within a really tasty typical array of flavors you would expect from a BdM. Tannis are soft and integrated. overall this seems to have hit a really good point in its development, and I am glad i have another bottle to enjoy. (7388 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 6/4/2009 & rated 94 points: dark red purple. no sign of aging black berries roses 13.5% alc. dry smooth fruit balance out tannins. elegant finish probably close to its peak after 9 years but with very little signs of aging. 97 must be even better (3245 views)
Tasted by beej on 2/9/2008 & rated 89 points: what he said, light for a brunello. all fruit, short finish. (3598 views)
Tasted by tanglenet on 10/13/2007 flawed bottle: Opened not decanted. Strong funk on the nose; mustiness that never improves. Corked. (3817 views)
Tasted by rjayson on 8/4/2007 & rated 89 points: Seemed a little light for a Brunello. However, a totally enjoyable wine (3930 views)

Argiano Brunello di Montalcino

Typical aging: "The 1st year is spent in FR oak barriques & tonneaux with different capacities, to strengthen the innate structure of the wine, while the 2nd is spent in larger Slavonian oak barrels which allow the wine to achieve balance. After completing the maturing process in wood, the wine is transferred into concrete tanks."

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
