Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 377 notes) - hiding notes with no text

 Tasted by John Nezlek on 1/25/2023 & rated 87 points: Note: I use the recommended scale, so 85 represents a very good wine.

Perfectly decent entry-level Chianti.
Initially, I thought it might be well past its prime, but after a little time it opened up.
Even better on Day 2.

Regardless, no value in waiting. (581 views)
 Tasted by Henman on 8/26/2017 & rated 91 points: Subtle funk and sois-bois on the nose. Medium bodied with a nicely aged touch, showing ripe dark fruit with licorice and funky notes. Good dusty bite on the finish. One of my favorites in the red flight. (4031 views)
 Tasted by amateur62 on 7/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Decanted two hours before dinner. Mature and at its peak now. Classical and very typical sangiovese with cherry and tertiary notes, smooth, good freshness, medium to long finish, everything fits together. Drink now or during the next two or three years. (4287 views)
 Tasted by capnkirk on 4/18/2017 & rated 88 points: has held up well. some berry flavors. goes well with cheese and fruits. (5074 views)
 Tasted by Umay Ceviker on 5/15/2016: Ruby with brick highlights. Evolved nose, ripe and jammy showing layers of leather and dried berries. No hard edges yet nothing to appeal the palate. Definitely past its best at least for this particular bottle. (8039 views)
 Tasted by drrobvino on 11/28/2015 & rated 91 points: Opened last night at a friend's blind tasting party.
The crowd loved this wine. Guesses were all over the place, until the host finally guessed 2010 Sangio...nice job skip2mylu!
The wine was an inky brick red at the core, fading to a nice red and tawny rim. Showing some age.
Nose of leather, tobacco, mushroom, wet earth, some red cherry fruit buried in there somewhere. Complex with a lot of tertiary elements shining through.
On the palate, many of those flavors were repeated from the nose, along with very nice med/med+ acidity, and med tannins that were still adequately astringent so as to give gorgeous mouthfeel and structure to this perfectly aged CCR.
Drinking well now, and will likely continue to do so through 2020 or longer. The wine was gorgeous.
Thanks to Larry for trading this wine to me! (8491 views)
 Tasted by SaiS on 1/10/2015: Mit veru zu spaghetti carbonara (7398 views)
 Tasted by SMagowan on 10/22/2014 & rated 89 points: First taste was a little chalky but then it quickly resolved into a nice bouquet of chocolate and raspberry and light oak. Very nice for this style of wine and excellent with red sauce. This is drinking well and has 1 - 3 years of drinking available. (7091 views)
 Tasted by SMagowan on 10/11/2014 & rated 88 points: Nice easy drinker. Nothing that stood out too much, but good with spaghetti and meatballs. (6436 views)
 Tasted by StefanAkiko on 7/11/2014 & rated 91 points: Maybe this is actually 90p, but after so many thin and watery Chiantis in the last few weeks of our Chianti race, this was a warmly welcomed btl. Still in its early drinking window.

Nose started cherryish and constrained. Dull. But after 6 hrs of decanting, the whole wine cellar had a marvellous aromatic presence of cherries, apples and faint herbs. Same in the glass at the restaurant.
In the mouth, this is just fantastic... A medium bodied, elegant wine with high acids and ample cherries BUT with great intensity and fruit all the way. Small tannins are enough to create the framework and small brett to make it multi dimensional.
Absolutely married the first plate, that also made us fall in love with the place: cold fusili with a grim tomato sauce and a large, raw shrimp. Fabulous!
Wife: 91p.
First visit to Canoviano in Daikanyama (Tokyo). This Italian restaurant did very well and the corkage fee is ... free! As long as you purchase something to drink, water is ok. (We chose a glass of the house Spumante: like a prima ballerina with hairy legs.)
Final btl, really wish we had more. (5091 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 3/3/2014 & rated 91 points: My last of 6 bottles drank over 5 years and by far the best! (4717 views)
 Tasted by vagabondtippler on 2/23/2014 & rated 90 points: Still good, loses a little something after an hour of being open so drink up right away.

Started out big but very smooth. The wine is very one dimensional no complexity at all but what is there is good. (3679 views)
(4244 views)
 Tasted by mikesvins on 4/5/2013 & rated 90 points: Very solid at this point and not over the hill yet. Rich fruits, some minerality, earth, oak elements, medium +acidity and medium + tannins. The finish lingers for quite a while. (5401 views)
 Tasted by Pantone877 on 2/2/2013 & rated 88 points: Past it's peak but still enjoyable after an hour's decant. (5054 views)
 Tasted by BernieMSY on 1/7/2013 & rated 91 points: Black cherry, deep cassis. Really showing well. (4707 views)
 Tasted by StefanAkiko on 1/6/2013 & rated 90 points: Non-blind. Had immediately @La Verdura, Yokohama.
Impression: a solidly outstanding Chianti Rufina.
Beautifully mellowing Chianti with that particular off-loading of cherry-baggage in the finish. In its stride. This grew throughout dinner, should have been properly decanted 2-3 hrs for maximum pleasure. Married tomato-bacon-sauce-pasta well but changed the orbit of the Earth with everything garlic.
Procured in Firenze. Final btl in some 3 years' time. (Wife: 90p) (4626 views)
 Tasted by Lyubomir Lefterov on 12/28/2012 & rated 91 points: In perfect condition now, relaxed, approachable, easy to drink. (4182 views)
 Tasted by mrpalmer on 12/17/2012 & rated 89 points: good (3221 views)
 Tasted by Antonius on 12/7/2012 & rated 86 points: In de neus wat toast, karamel en rood fruit. Karamel komt terug in de smaak evenals rood fruit. Duidelijke, maar zachte tannines en mooi zuurtje. Medium bodied. Redelijk lange afdronk. (2898 views)
 Tasted by Weinfreund JR on 12/1/2012 & rated 90 points: "Ein edel wirkendes Bouquet mit feinen Fruchtnoten, Kräutern und Gewürzen. Somit einerseits feine Kirscharomen und dunkle Früchte. Andererseits einen Hauch Kardamon und Thymian. " (2951 views)
 Tasted by BernieMSY on 8/27/2012 & rated 91 points: This wine has evolved nicely and I'd probably at its peak. The tannins have softened, and nice levels of fruit remain. This bottle was superior to others I've had, but I'd suggest drinking 'em if you've got 'em (3628 views)
 Tasted by MatthijsVisser on 8/25/2012: Bright red fruit: red cherries and cranberry, as well as some plum, hints of cedar, and a bit of white pepper. Soft tannins and above average acidity. Well balanced, soft, and medium-bodied. (3639 views)
 Tasted by MrD on 8/14/2012 & rated 90 points: Enjoyed as much as usual. (3545 views)
 Tasted by flussier on 8/9/2012 & rated 91 points: Robe de couleur: Rouge-brunattre extrêmement foncé; Bouquet: boisé, cerise, sang; Très Astringent, Amertume faible, Corsé; Arômes en bouche: boisé, cerise, fruit mûr, cerise, a decanter, rond, bon accords, 4ans en cellier, aurait put encore veillir (1473 views)

2005 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Chianti Rùfina Nipozzano Riserva

* VARIETY:Sangiovese 90%, complementary varieties (Malvasia nera, Colorino, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon)
* VINTAGE REPORT:After a fluctuating growing season that required attentive vineyard supervision, particularly in certain areas, this year’s was a fine harvest indeed. The superb quality of the grapes on Frescobaldi’s various estates was a reward for careful the work and good management decisions throughout the season. In vineyards characterized by deep, well-drained soils, special attention was given to the vines with a generous leaf pulling process and as a result, the grapes are in very good condition. Nipozzano Riserva is elegant, fruity and with good spiciness.
* SOIL TYPE: Dry and stony, with clay, limestone, well drained, poor in organic matter.
* PLANTING DENSISTY: From 2,500 to 6,000 vines per hectare
* TRAYNING SYSTEM: Spur - pruned cordon and guyot
* YIELD/HEACTARE:45 Hl
* HARVEST PERIOD: Soft
* FERMENTATION VATS: Stainless steel vats, keeping the different varieties separated
* FERMENTATION TEMPERATURE:<30°C
* LENGTH OF FERMENTATION:13 days
* LENGTH OF MACERATION ON THE SKINS:25 days
* MALOLACTIC FERMENTATION: Immediately after the alcoholic fermentation
* MATURATION METHOD: Second and third passage barriques
* LENGTH OF MATURATION: 24 months in barriques
* TASTING NOTES: An enticing, rather pronounced ruby red, edged with garnet. Its suite of fragrances exhibits considerable complexity, opening to dark fruit such as plum and blackcurrant, then enriched by a pungent spiciness that betrays cinnamon and clove. The attack offers dense, impressive pulp, and fine-grained tannins that marry beautifully with its alcohol; the result is a solidly-built, but not heavy or extractive, wine with a seamless, long-lingering finish.
* SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Barbecued meat and beef stews, aged cheeses.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
